Chapter 419 Just My Husband

Yunice couldnโ€™t hold back a laugh.

Just then, another message popped up on her phone.

She switched apps and saw a voice message from Wyatt: โ€œWhat are you laughing at?โ€

Yunice looked up and replied with a grin through the glass, sending him a voice message: โ€œMy friends think youโ€™re hot.โ€

Wyatt replied, โ€œYou could learn a thing or two from your friendsโ€˜ taste.โ€

Yunice instantly rolled her eyes.

All because she never complimented him on his looks? Now he was accusing her of having bad taste?

The guys in the group chat were joking about having a get-together at Yuniceโ€™s place now that the lockdown was liftedโ€“they wanted a glimpse of that high-class lifestyle.

The girls, meanwhile, kept pestering Yunice for more info about her โ€œbrother.โ€

Yunice hesitated for a moment, then sent a message: โ€œHeโ€™s not my brother. Heโ€™s my husband.โ€

As soon as she sent it, the whole group chat exploded.

โ€œYouโ€™re married?!โ€

โ€œOh my god, you got married this early?โ€

โ€œMy mom told me not to get married until thirtyโ€“said girls should build a career first so we have the money and confidence to get respect from our in-laws. Yunice, you didnโ€™t even finish college before tying the knot?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so jealous. Yunice, your familyโ€™s well-off, and you married a guy with a body like that? Youโ€™re living the dream.โ€

Tommy quoted Yuniceโ€™s message-โ€œHeโ€™s my husbandโ€œ-and added a shocked emoji.

Heโ€™d guessed the man was Yuniceโ€™s boyfriend, but he hadnโ€™t expected they were actually married.

The group kept buzzing about her, and Yunice finally had to step in to stop it: โ€œOnce the lockdown is over, Iโ€™ll invite you all over to hang out.โ€

โ€œFor real?!โ€

โ€œWow! I want to see that huge apartment! I want to roll around in the garden! Yunice, you probably canโ€™t even imagineโ€“most of us who moved to Beijing donโ€™t even have real jobs yet. Weโ€™re stuck living in basement apartments without a single ray of sunshine. Itโ€™s so cramped, the bed practically touches the sink. Who knows when weโ€™ll be able to afford a place with real lightโ€ฆโ€

After that message, everyone in the group started sighing.

They were all young, with no solid family backing. Trying to make something of themselves in the big city, they were chasing opportunity but had no idea what their future would hold.

Yuniceโ€™s seemingly perfect life felt even more distant and enviable to them.

But as Yunice read those messages, she felt something complicated stirring in her chest.

All the things they enviedโ€“she had them because she was with Wyatt.

Without Wyattโ€™s halo, she was just like them. Just an ordinary person.

She understood their uncertainty. And she was well aware of her own shortcomings.

Then someone tagged her and asked if they could meet her husband at the get-together.

Yunice replied, โ€œIโ€™ll have to ask him first.โ€

The group responded with a flood of emojis: โ€œTotally get it.โ€

A family like his might not be comfortable with that kind of exposure.

The group chat gradually quieted down.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling window, the sun was sinking. Yunice watched the sunset glow at the horizon, then glanced over at Wyatt sitting outsideโ€“legs crossed, quietly looking at his tablet.

She sent him a voice message: โ€œYou planning to camp out there?โ€

Wyatt replied, โ€œIโ€™m just wondering what would happen if I didnโ€™t go to the office for fourteen days.โ€

His gaze turned playful as he looked at her.

If they stayed locked up together for fourteen days, would they get closer?

Yunice looked at the increasingly serious expression on his face and asked back, โ€œArenโ€™t you scared?โ€

She still remembered when she and the other volunteers left the hospitalโ€“people looked at them with suspicion and fear. At restaurants, they didnโ€™t even go into private rooms; they asked the staff to bring their food to a separate container unit next door.

Everyone treated them like carriers of the virus. They couldnโ€™t wait to get away from them.

But Wyatt was doing the exact opposite.

Wasnโ€™t he scared at all?

Even though the death rate had gone down, complications and long-term effects were still irreversible.

Like Elsieโ€“she was one of the first to get sick. She was gradually recovering, but now she had complications.

Her nerves had been damaged, and one of her ears had become partially deaf.

It wasnโ€™t a huge disability, but it was still a health issue.

And everyone reacted differently. With so many unknowns, wasnโ€™t Wyatt afraid?

Wyatt said, โ€œOpen the door. Let me in.โ€

Yunice shook her head. No.

Wyatt didnโ€™t push it. He just stayed there until stars appeared in the sky. Only when Yunice changed into her pajamas and went to close the curtains did he finally return to the bedroom.

Meanwhile, Owen was still in the hospital.

His recovery was slow. Heโ€™d even coughed up blood for a few days. The virus had been suppressed, but it had caused liver damage. He would need surgery down the line.

Now that the hospital was open again, family members could come in to help care for patients. Owen hadnโ€™t reached Elsie, but he did get in touch with Lily.

Lily said she had a cold and didnโ€™t want to risk passing it to Owen, so she hadnโ€™t come.

But Oscar had visited the hospital. As he looked over Owenโ€™s medical reports, his brows drew tighter and tighter.

Owen had damage to multiple organs. Recovery would be a long road, and his health would be poor for quite a while.
