Chapter 413 The Truth Beneath the Suit
Wyatt, still holding Yunice tightly, felt her arms remain locked around him. Thinking she was still doubtful, he gently offered, โWant to go get the medicine now?โ
Yunice looked up and pressed a soft kiss to his throat, just beneath his Adamโs apple.
His breath caught.
Then he gave her back a light pat. โLaurieโs waiting. Go.โ
He knewโif they delayed too long, Owen might not make it. And that would haunt Yunice.
She nodded and left for the lab.
Inside Wellinges Pharma, Laurie looked Yunice over through her protective suit, her relief obvious. โYouโre likely past the incubation period. You mightโve avoided infection.โ
Yunice had always been meticulous with her protection. If anyone would survive, it made sense itโd be her.
Laurie led her through the halls of the research facilityโpast the machines, the white walls, the silent, humming dread.
They stopped at a room. Inside, a single patient lay in isolation.
Elsie.
Tubes threaded through her limbs, monitors beeping steadily as she lay unconscious in a bed under strict observation.
There was no dignity left in her state. But that wasnโt the labโs cruelty. It was just what the disease did.
Had Owen not traded places with her, she wouldnโt have lasted this long at Saunders Hospital.
Yunice stood by the glass, unmoved. She raised her phone and took several photos.
Laurie, puzzled, asked, โWhat are you doing?โ
โPsychological triggers can activate a patientโs survival instinct,โ Yunice replied calmly.
If Owen saw Elsie like this, what were the odds heโd find the will to live?
From there, Laurie brought her to another room and handed her a sealed medication box.
โWe already tested this antigen on Elsie. It worksโbut itโs neurotoxic. Attacks the nervous system.โ
โWhat kind of side effects?โ Yunice asked, frowning.
Laurie shook her head. โWe havenโt had enough time. Clinical symptoms havenโt even fully emerged yet. I canโt guarantee what itโll do long termโor if the damage is reversible."
Yunice took the box. โDoesnโt matter. We save him now. Everything else can wait.โ
As she turned to go, Laurie called after her. โYou need to be careful. Weโve skipped standard procedure. If they surviveโฆ they might turn on you.โ
Yunice scoffed. โTurn on me? With what proof? Who can say Elsie was ever at Wellinges Pharma?โ
Could Owen even admit his own role in all this?
She left the facility with Wyatt.
He didnโt trust the situation, so he sent one of his most loyal men to discreetly accompany Yunice. The closer they got to success, the more vigilant they had to be.
Back in the hospital, Yunice returned to Owenโs room with the medicine case.
Every patient room was under 24-hour surveillance.
To inject Owen unnoticed, she needed to disable that first.
Luckily, that was one of her specialties. She quickly disrupted the signal and blacked out the roomโs monitoring feed.
Still, she didnโt inject immediately. Owen had just undergone surgery. His body might not withstand it.
She checked the monitor, scanning the vitals, then pulled his arm gently from beneath the plastic isolation drape and began to take his pulse.
That was when she heard itโslow, deliberate footsteps behind her.
She turned sharply.
A figure in full hazmat gear stood two meters behind her.
Yunice didnโt move, only scanned the figure from head to toe.
Chapter 413 The Truth Beneath the Suit
The name written on the suitโshe didnโt recognize it.
But the eyes behind the visorโฆ
They looked familiar.
The person spoke first: โKnew Iโd find you here.โ
โPaul?โ Yunice instantly recognized the voice.
He glanced around, searching. โWhereโs Elsie? I combed the patient and death records. Sheโs not listed anywhere.โ
He had found Yuniceโbecause she was the only one registered from her family in the hospital.
โYou came to the isolation zoneโฆ looking for Elsie?โ Yunice narrowed her eyes.
Hadnโt she made Paul see through Elsie? Hadnโt he figured out her lies? Why was he still this fixated?
Paul didnโt answer. His eyes didnโt leave Yunice.
โElsieโฆโ
And then, as if summoned by her name, Owen stirred.
His eyes cracked open, foggy, heavy-lidded. โElsieโฆ is she sickโฆ?โ
He mustโve already guessed. But he still wanted Yunice to say it aloud.
She didnโt.
Owen turned his head slowly, catching sight of the figure across the room. His eyes struggled to focus, but then widened in recognition.
โโฆPaul?โ he rasped. He tried to sit up. โDidโฆ did Elsie send you? Are you here to take me to herโฆ?โ
