Chapter 407 A Moment of Breath

Wyatt pulled off his protective suit and wrapped Yunice in a tight embrace.

Startled, she murmured, โ€œI havenโ€™t cleared my observation period yetโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t move,โ€ Wyatt said in a low, firm voice.

Yunice fell silent.

He held her for a long time before finally letting go.

โ€œHow did you even get in here?โ€ she asked.

โ€œI knocked out the driver and took his suit.โ€

Wyatt wasnโ€™t trained in medical protocolโ€”posing as a doctor wouldโ€™ve been too risky. So heโ€™d come in pretending to be a driver.

Yunice sighed, already knowing heโ€™d use some reckless method like this.

Still, she scolded, โ€œWhy would you come here at all?โ€

The Cooper family couldnโ€™t go a day without him. Coming here like this was reckless, dangerous, and irrational.

โ€œIโ€™m already here. Donโ€™t waste time nagging,โ€ Wyatt said, draping an arm over her shoulder as they walked toward the desk.

Yunice brushed his arm off with a tired frown. โ€œKeep your protective gear on.โ€

She put her mask back on, then stood across from him behind the desk. The distance between them felt more clinical than affectionate.

โ€œNot very welcoming,โ€ Wyatt muttered.

In his imagination, she shouldโ€™ve flown into his arms the second she saw him.

Yunice just stared at himโ€”at the flattened hair under his cap, the casual expression on his face, the dark circles under his eyes. โ€œYou havenโ€™t been sleeping.โ€

Wyatt shot back, โ€œHave you?โ€

Classic Wyatt. If he didnโ€™t want to answer, he always replied with another question.

Looking around the room, Wyatt asked, โ€œWhereโ€™s Owen?โ€

Just hearing that name made his expression tighten. If not for Owen, Yunice wouldโ€™ve been cleared to leave already.

Now she was on the internal listโ€”trying to get her out again could tarnish her reputation permanently.

Yunice lifted her chin toward the inner room. โ€œHeโ€™s in there.โ€

Neither of them had spoken since being quarantined together. Each kept their distance.

Wyatt looked back at her. โ€œLet me hold you again.โ€

โ€œ..What?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m leaving soon.โ€

Yunice hesitated.

Wyatt reached out a hand. After a moment, she sighed, placed her hand in his, and let him guide her around the desk and onto his lap.

Looking at him eye to eye, she reminded, โ€œMake sure you disinfect when you leave, okay?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not going to say anything else? I finally came all this way,โ€ Wyatt murmured, one arm around her waist.

Sheโ€™d gotten even skinnier.

โ€œSeeing meโ€ฆ feeling any better?โ€ he asked.

Her eyes welled up. She nodded.

Not just betterโ€”steadier.

Mr. Gerardoโ€™s death had left her in a deep emotional fog. She hadnโ€™t expected Wyatt to come in person, just to lift her spirits.

From the radio clipped to Wyattโ€™s belt came a static-laced voice: โ€œTeam assembly. Repeat: Team assembly.โ€

Yunice lifted her gaze. Their eyes met.

Time was up.

She leaned forward and pressed a kissโ€”mask to maskโ€”on his cheek.

Wyattโ€™s eyes darkened, arms tightening around her. โ€œCome with me?โ€

He didnโ€™t care about reputation or gossip. He had the means to wipe away any stain on her record.

All she had to do was say yes.

Conflicted emotion flickered in Yuniceโ€™s eyes. She could runโ€”she had the privilege to choose that.

But just then, the door handle turned.

Owen stood at the threshold.

The moment he saw Wyatt, his face lit up. He stepped forward instinctively. โ€œMr. Wyattโ€”Elsie, is sheโ€ฆโ€

Yunice leapt off Wyattโ€™s lap and stood between them. โ€œGo,โ€ she whispered to Wyatt.

If Owen latched on, things would get messy fast.

โ€œHeโ€™s not stable. Heโ€™s been obsessing over Elsie. Just go,โ€ she muttered, pushing Wyatt toward the door.

But Owen, finally seeing someone who might have answers, wasnโ€™t letting go that easily. He rushed after them.

โ€œWaitโ€”Mr. Wyatt! Howโ€™s Elsie? Has she shown symptoms? Is she still alive?!โ€

The radio at Wyattโ€™s side crackled again, urgently calling for him to rejoin the team.

Yunice blocked Owen, then turned to Wyatt. โ€œGet your suit back on.โ€

Owenโ€™s voice cracked. โ€œYunice, donโ€™t stop me! I just want to ask him a few questions! Elsieโ€”did she get sick? Whatโ€™s happening to her? Is she still alive?โ€

โ€œI keep dreaming sheโ€™s dead. I see my mom cryingโ€ฆโ€

His words tumbled out, wild and frantic.

โ€œI dreamed you and Wyatt were blaming meโ€ฆ saying I ruined everythingโ€ฆ even my dad came to take me awayโ€ฆโ€

His mind was unravelingโ€”and seeing Wyatt had become his last lifeline.
