Chapter 398 One Hundred Billion Regrets +8 Pearls
Wyattโs voice came through the radio, heavy with frustration. โWhen you made that final call, why didnโt you tell me what was really going on? I spent ten billion trying to get you out, and you stayed inside?!โ
โTen billion?!โ Yuniceโs voice cracked with disbelief.
Wyatt gave a sharp laugh. โYou could spend your whole life treating patients and never earn ten billion.โ
Yunice didnโt see it as generosity. All she could feel was the gut-wrenching waste, the sheer stupidity of it all.
โAre you insane? Got money burning a hole in your pocket? What a waste on Elsieโten billion down the drain!โ
Her voice brimmed with heartbreakโover the money, not the man who spent it trying to save her.
The more she thought about it, the more it gnawed at her. She asked cautiously, โSince I didnโt make it outโฆ can you get that money back? I meanโฆ ten billionโI really canโt pay that backโฆโ
Wyatt took a slow, audible breath. โYou think this is about the money? The problem is, even with that money, I still couldnโt get you out. So tell me, what should I have done instead? You teach me.โ
Yunice huffed. โI wanted to leave. Owen drugged meโhe knocked me out with anesthesia!โ
Wyatt cut her off, furious. โAnd before that? You contacted Laurie. You contacted Taylor. You said your goodbyes to every irrelevant person in your life. But you never once told me the truth.โ
โIf you had told me what was really going on from the start, do you think things wouldโve escalated like this?โ
Yunice fell silent for a long time before finally saying, โThereโs still no treatment plan for this outbreak. Mr. Gerardoโs assistant was young and strong, and he died within 36 hours. Mr. Gerardo himself isnโt doing much better.โ
She paused for a few seconds, then added, โI didnโt want anyone else to risk getting infected, especially you.โ
โBut when you sent someone to pick me upโฆ I really did want to go. I thought, if I got infected, at least Wellinges Pharma could use my case for research. Itโd mean something.โ
Wyatt didnโt respond immediately. Neither did Yunice.
But they both understood.
When death was a possibility, money and power couldnโt guarantee anything. Even if Wyatt had pulled her out, if sheโd already been infected and no cure was readyโฆ sheโd still die.
After nearly a minute of silence, Wyatt finally spoke again. โIโll give the radio to Laurie. You two work together and find a treatment. Fast.โ
Yunice smiledโan honest, involuntary smile.
Wyatt heard it, and his tone immediately darkened. โYouโre laughing? You think this is funny?โ
โNo,โ Yunice said, still smiling. โItโs justโฆ suddenly, you seem kind of admirable.โ
Wyatt didnโt get it. โWhat?โ
โYou know what makes a man most attractive?โ she asked.
Wyatt waited.
โItโs his ability to solve problems,โ she said without hesitation.
Wyatt fell quiet again, then muttered, โSave the compliments for when you make it out alive.โ
Just before he ended the call, he added, โAnd donโt forgetโyou still owe me ten billion.โ
The mention of money made Yuniceโs face collapse again. She was dead brokeโstill in debt to Quinton for another billion. Now with this new ten-billion tab, she didnโt even dare die anymore.
After hanging up, she stepped out of the lounge.
Owen was waiting by the door. The moment he saw her, he rushed to ask, โDid you tell Wyatt to contact our mom? Sheโs traveling abroadโif she canโt reach us, sheโs going to panic!โ
Lily was overseas. If she came home and couldnโt get in touch with Owen or Elsie, sheโd be terrified.
Yuniceโs eyes flickered. She hadnโt given a second thought to anyone in the Saunders family, not in a long time.
Sheโd remembered to consider Melinaโs safetyโbut not once had Lily crossed her mind.
Owen grew angry. โThatโs your mother!โ
Yunice shot back, unbothered. โAnd if the roles were reversedโif she were the one who knew danger was comingโdo you think sheโd warn me?โ
โYouโre paranoid! You always think the worst of people, like everyoneโs out to get you!โ Owen fumed. โI got stuck in here because of youโhave I said a single word about it?โ
Yunice turned slowly to face him. Owen fell quiet immediately.
She gave him a cold, sweeping glance and said with crystal clarity, โIf you want your sister to stay safe out there, donโt push me.โ
She rattled the radio in her hand, her meaning unmistakable.
Owenโs face darkened. Remembering Wyattโs earlier threat, his stomach turned.
โItโs all Wyattโs faultโyouโve become just as vicious,โ he said bitterly. โYouโre both monsters. How could you, as a woman, be okay with what he threatened to do to Elsie?โ
