The situation was urgent. An incident of this scale, with such serious societal implications, clearly couldnโ€™t happen without immense financial backing.

Ten billion for one personโ€ฆ thatโ€™s a good deal.

If safety could be guaranteed, it was feasible.

And the Cooper family had access to the most advanced medical facilities and teams. Even if the person being exchanged ended up infected, theyโ€™d be the first to receive treatment and become a valuable case for pushing the current blank slate of treatment research forward.

Given the extraordinary circumstances, exceptions had to be made. Multiple departments convened immediately and finally decidedโ€”under strict supervision from both sidesโ€”to transfer the person Wyatt requested out of Saunders Hospital.

Inside Saunders Hospital, chaos had already broken out.

The regular civilians were especially frantic, locked up in the main hall, crying and screaming to be let home.

They had smashed the glass doors and windows with benches, leaving them in ruins, but the situation was quickly subdued by the police stationed outside.

Yunice stepped out of the medical waste disposal room.

Right now, everyone was looking out for themselves. No one had the capacity to care for anyone else. The moment Yunice emerged, a panicked Owen grabbed her wrist.

Looking deeply concerned, Owen said, โ€œCome with me!โ€

Yunice didnโ€™t know what was going on, but she was pulled by Owen all the way to the directorโ€™s office.

At that moment, there were only three people in the roomโ€”her, Owen, and Elsie.

Elsie had already changed into a fresh lab coat. The clothes that Mr. Gerardo had dirtied were now in the trash can, which still hadnโ€™t been emptied.

After locking the door, Owen looked at the two of them, clearly anxious. โ€œI got word that the hospital discovered an unidentified pathogen. Itโ€™s highly risky. Everyone in the hospital is now under lockdown.โ€

His frown deepened as he continued, โ€œThis is really bad. Anyone whoโ€™s come into contact with the pathogen will be quarantined and investigated. No one will be able to intervene. So neither of you should go anywhere. When the inspection team comes, just stick to one story: youโ€™ve both been in my office the entire time and havenโ€™t had any contact with patients. Once the observation period is over, they should let us go.โ€

Elsie sat still and glanced at Yunice.

It seemed like she was thinking: I canโ€™t believe Owen called her here too.

Yunice felt a strange tug in her heart. Owen actually had enough of a conscience to think of bringing her too.

But this kind of scheming was clearly being used in the wrong place.

She didnโ€™t argue with him. She walked quietly to the window.

The view from Owenโ€™s office was excellent. There were no buildings obstructing the front, and she could see the road outside the hospital at a glance.

She saw people in full hazmat suits and various inspection teams standing ready below.

She also saw the long line of vehicles on the road turning around.

They were clearing out the entire area around Saunders Hospital.

At the hospital entrance, a line of cars had stopped, surrounded by a restless crowd.

Yunice wished she had a pair of binocularsโ€”then she could see more clearly what was going on outside.

Binoculars?

That thought triggered something. She turned around and started looking for Owenโ€™s phone charger.

Seeing her still thinking about charging her phone at a time like this, Owen said irritably, โ€œDonโ€™t waste your energy. The hospitalโ€™s signal has already been completely blocked. You canโ€™t reach Wyatt. Heโ€™s not powerful enough to come save you either.โ€

Yunice shot him a glance but said nothing. She just watched her phone battery slowly climb.

Once it had enough power to stay on, she walked back to the window with her phone, opened the camera app, and aimed it at the line of cars outside the hospital gate.

She zoomed in, and then zoomed in again, and againโ€ฆ.

On her screen, the license plates and even faces outside the hospital gate were now clearly visible.

Owen came up beside her andโ€”shockinglyโ€”saw Wyatt on her phone screen.

G

Her phone was locked onto Wyattโ€™s every move. He appeared to be calmly making preparations outside, showing no signs of panic or desperation.

Owen said grimly, โ€œLooks like youโ€™re not that important to him after all. Lookโ€”everyone elseโ€™s families are fighting their way in, arguing and pushing to get through.โ€

Yunice asked in return, โ€œAnd would it help if he did?โ€

Owen was momentarily speechless.

โ€œLove isnโ€™t supposed to be calculated in terms of value. Heโ€™s just being a coward who doesnโ€™t want trouble.โ€

Owen said firmly, โ€œOnly your closest family would risk everything for you. Just like I am, for you and Elsie.โ€

He felt this crisis was the perfect opportunity for Yunice to finally see who truly cared about her.

Yunice replied dryly, โ€œNot necessarily.โ€

Owen had no words.

He couldnโ€™t communicate with Yunice, so after standing awkwardly for a bit he turned his attention back to comforting Elsie.

Yunice kept observing the scene outside through her phone.

Then she noticed somethingโ€”Wyatt was looking in her direction.

And he was holding a pair of binoculars.

Realizing he might actually be able to see her, Yunice immediately began signaling through the window with her hands.

She repeated the gestures several times. If Wyatt was watching, those high-powered binoculars would definitely pick up her signs.
