Chapter 199: Her Fatherโ€™s Brother

Carl gestured animatedly with his hand. โ€œA bottle this big โ€“ bam! โ€“ right to the head. You tell me, what should I do about that?โ€

Wyatt, facing Yuniceโ€™s gaze, instinctively averted his eyes.

โ€œHeโ€ฆโ€ Yunice faltered, then finally said, โ€œHe assaulted a senior. Thatโ€™s on him.โ€

Carl clicked his tongue. โ€œIf Iโ€™d known this is the kind of guy you were marrying โ€“ reckless and violent โ€“ I wouldnโ€™t have bothered showing up for your wedding.โ€

Yunice lowered her head and muttered, โ€œMr. Carlโ€ฆ You already know about the wedding?โ€

Carl snorted. โ€œI heard the Powell family had something to celebrate. Asked around, found out Paul wasnโ€™t marrying you โ€“ this guy is marrying the Saunders girl. And thereโ€™s only one Miss Saunders, right? So here I am.โ€

A bunny girl walked in with a first-aid kit, setting it down while eyeing Yunice with clear disbelief. She probably never imagined the least eye-catching woman here would turn out to be someone Carl personally favored.

Yunice hesitated. The truth was, she was no longer the only daughter of the Saunders family, and the reason the Powell family continued to publicly call her Miss Saunders was because she didnโ€™t even have a real name in that household. Still, Carl likely didnโ€™t know that. He mustโ€™ve arranged todayโ€™s meeting with Wyatt as aโ€ฆ test. From the looks of thingsโ€ฆ Wyatt hadnโ€™t passed.

Carl had leverage over Wyattโ€™s development project. If he wanted to, he could help Yunice stop the wedding altogether. But things had changed. Her father was gone. Yunice wasnโ€™t sure how much Carl still cared. After all, even her own family had betrayed her.

Seeing the sadness on her face, Carl assumed she was still upset over Paul. He huffed, โ€œI never liked that punk anyway. Good riddance.โ€ Then his eyes landed on Wyatt again, full of scrutiny. โ€œMr. Cooper, youโ€™ve already taken your wing. Donโ€™t you think itโ€™s time to sit down for a bit?โ€

Wyatt frowned slightly, then turned to Yunice. โ€œArenโ€™t you going to introduce us?โ€

โ€œOh!โ€ Yunice realized, flustered. โ€œThis is Mr. Carl. He was my fatherโ€™s senior โ€“ his sworn brother. My dad went into medicine, Mr. Carl went into business.โ€

Carl nodded with mock solemnity. โ€œThatโ€™s right. We were close. I treat Yunice like my own daughter. Which makes me your dad, too.โ€

The sheer shamelessness made Yunice want to crawl into a hole. After Wyatt wouldโ€”and punch someone againโ€”she hurried to change the subject, only for Carl to see her. He pressed on with a scoff. โ€œLook at him โ€“ all decked out in designer clothes โ€“ meanwhile youโ€™re wearing some cheap polyester junk from a sidewalk sale. I got zapped by static three times just standing near you?โ€

Xunice was so embarrassed, she didnโ€™t even dare to look up. Carl wasnโ€™t finished. โ€œHonestly, heโ€™s no better than Paul. Maybe you should ditch him too. You need a real man back in Murica โ€“ call strong muscles forโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMr. Carl!โ€ Yunice practically shrieked.

Carl shrugged. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, sweetheart. He wants to build a hospital in Northvale โ€“ he has to go through me first.โ€

He suddenly grew serious, locking eyes with her. โ€œYunny. Tell me the truth. Do you really want to marry this guy!โ€

Though the question was directed at Yunice, his piercing gaze was fixed on Wyatt. Wyattโ€™s grip on his cane visibly tightened. He cared.

The question caught Yunice off guard. She didnโ€™t know how to answer.

Carl waited a few seconds, then let her off the hook. โ€œNo rush. Weโ€™ll talk later.โ€

Both Yunice and Wyatt relaxed a little. Just then, the bunny girl approached and whispered something in Carlโ€™s ear. Whatever it was, it seemed urgent. Carl ended the meeting abruptly and arranged another time to see Yunice. As he left, he rubbed his bruised head and muttered curses under his breath. Wyatt said nothing. Once Carl was gone, Wyatt and Yunice also left the building.

Yunice frowned. โ€œWhat were you even negotiating with Mr. Carl about? If the deal wasnโ€™t going well, couldnโ€™t they justโ€ฆ talk it out? By go strenght to violence?โ€

Wyatt opened his mouth, then closed it again. Instead, he asked, โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you ask Carl off the engagement?โ€

Yunice replied evenly, โ€œI changed my mind.โ€

โ€œJust like that?โ€

โ€œEveryone thinks weโ€™re doomed. Letโ€™s prove them wrong. Make them regret ever putting us together.โ€

Wyatt raised a brow. โ€œYouโ€™re doing all thisโ€ฆ out of spite?โ€

โ€œExactly. Iโ€™m not leaving Silver Burch. And since someone insists on making me their enemy, I might as well go all in.โ€
