Chapter 188: Don't Pretend It's Charity

โ€œIf youโ€™re so determined to compensate someone,โ€ Yunice said bluntly, โ€œwhy not compensate Melina directly?โ€ She exposed them without hesitation. โ€œWhen Lauren died, the Drake family took a sum of money and walked away. They never cared about her. So why should they be compensated? They donโ€™t deserve it. Thatโ€™s not kindnessโ€”thatโ€™s enabling the wicked.โ€

Owen didnโ€™t reply, choosing instead to defend Elsie. โ€œElsie didnโ€™t know the full story. She didnโ€™t mean any harm.โ€

โ€œNo harm?โ€ Yuniceโ€™s eyes locked onto Elsie. โ€œSheโ€™s the worst of you all!โ€ She stared her down, her voice rising with each word. โ€œEveryone knows the Drake family treated Lauren like garbage. If you could dig up information on them, then you must have seen what kind of people they are. And instead of feeling outraged, you hand them compensation like a reward. Are you praising them for what they did? Or are you just hoping theyโ€™ll come after me next?โ€

Elsie let out a shocked gasp, startled by the accusation. She pushed away from Paulโ€™s protective embrace, flustered and eager to explain. โ€œItโ€™s not like that! I didnโ€™t say anything! They still donโ€™t know Lauren died in your placeโ€ฆโ€

Yuniceโ€™s voice cut in like a blade. โ€œIโ€™ll say it againโ€”Lauren didnโ€™t die in my place. Donโ€™t try to trap me.โ€

Elsieโ€™s eyes darted, avoiding her gaze as she subtly slid her phone behind her backโ€”recording. But Yunice had been too sharp, too guarded. She hadnโ€™t given them even a sliver of evidence.

Owen, of course, had no idea Elsie was recording. He still jumped to defend her. โ€œElsie didnโ€™t lie. I did tell her about your situation, but I made it clearโ€”nobodyโ€™s allowed to leak anything.โ€

Elsie chimed in earnestly. โ€œThatโ€™s right, Yunice. Your reputation is tied to the Saunders familyโ€™s reputation. Iโ€™d never say a word.โ€

Yunice said flatly, โ€œYou donโ€™t have to pretend. The less you do, the safer we all are. But now that youโ€™ve gone and delivered gifts to the Drake family, with their greedy nature, theyโ€™ve probably already set their sights on our family. When they come knocking, are you all going to throw me under the bus to calm things down again?โ€

Owen snapped, โ€œWell, you caused this mess! Are we wrong to try and fix it?โ€

Lily, whoโ€™d been silent until now, quietly added, โ€œYunny, if we really wanted to throw you under the bus, why would we go out of our way to speak up on your behalf?โ€

โ€œMadam Lily,โ€ Yunice sneered, โ€œdo you really think thatโ€™s fair to say? The Powell familyโ€™s accusations were just a few days agoโ€”did you forget that already?โ€

They were always willing to protect her over small things; but once things got serious, sheโ€™d be the first one offered up as a scapegoat.

Chapter 108: Don't Pretend It's Charity

When Lily lowered her head in shame, Yunice continued, her voice heavy with irony. โ€œLaurenโ€™s death was already closed and buried. No one cared. Yet here you are, digging it back up just to pin the blame on me. You stirred up the Drake family and pointed them straight at the Saunders familyโ€”real clever of you.โ€

Owen was speechless, suddenly struck by how dangerous things really were. Heโ€™d signed off on Laurenโ€™s autopsy report himself. Heโ€™d seen the true nature of the Drake familyโ€”shameless and ruthless, willing to stoop to anything.

Owen hesitated, glancing at Elsie. His look clearly carried a hint of blame. When Paul first brought up Lauren, Owen had originally wanted to keep it buried. After all, so much time had passed. No one was going to reopen that wound. But it was Elsie who kept preaching about conscience, saying they couldnโ€™t stay silent just because no one else knew. She even threw it back at himโ€”asked if he wanted to be as heartless and cold-blooded as Yunice.

Heโ€™d been provoked, and thatโ€™s what led him to agree to let her take the money to the Drake family. But now that he thought about it, they had completely overcomplicated something that couldโ€™ve stayed simple.

Sensing Owenโ€™s shifting blame, Elsie scrambled to fix things. โ€œGoing to the Drake family was my mistake. I didnโ€™t think it through. The person I shouldโ€™ve made amends to first was Madam Melina. Iโ€™ll go to her right now and apologizeโ€ฆโ€

Whether it was ignorance or just poor timing, Lily actually nodded in agreement and took off a jade bracelet, handing it to Elsie. โ€œBring some valuable things with you.โ€

Elsie was moved. โ€œMom, this was a gift from Dad. Youโ€™ve never even let anyone touch it.โ€ The โ€œDadโ€ in her mouth was Will. Ever since coming into the Saunders family, she really had started acting like his rightful daughter. The worst part was no one thought anything was wrong with that.

Lily stroked the bracelet in her hand, her voice soft and solemn. โ€œTake it. If it helps clear Yunnyโ€™s name, Dad wouldโ€™ve wanted that.โ€

โ€œMom,โ€ Owen said, clearly reluctant to see Lily sacrifice something so important, โ€œIโ€™ll find something better to offer Madam Melina. We canโ€™t give away that bracelet.โ€

But Lilyโ€™s eyes welled with tears. โ€œWe already lost a jade bangle last time compensating Mr. Quinton. The Saunders family took a massive hit from that. Thereโ€™s no money left to buy anything better.โ€

Owen frowned, already eyeing Yunice. If Yunice would just hand over her fatherโ€™s medical notes, he could sell them to the research instituteโ€”and that would more than make up for theโ€ฆ
