Chapter 163: Red Flags and Redder Lies

It was strange that Elsie, who always acted like she loved Moss, hadn't even noticed he was gone.

โ€œI saw itโ€ฆโ€ Elsie scrambled to explain. โ€œI just didnโ€™t bring it up because I was afraid itโ€™d upset you.โ€

Paulโ€™s eyes were red as he looked at her. โ€œMoss is dead. Does that make you sad?โ€

That huge parrotโ€”with its sharp claws and habit of flinging itself at people, yanking out hairโ€”was something sheโ€™d only ever tolerated to seem sweet in front of Paul. If it werenโ€™t for appearances, she wouldnโ€™t have forced herself to stomach the fear and disgust of interacting with Moss.

And Moss was raised by Paul and Yunice. Mossโ€™s death made her feel like she was on cloud nine, not crying. Why would I feel sad? She pinched her thigh hard, forcing out a few tears. โ€œOf course Iโ€™m sadโ€ฆโ€

Paulโ€™s frown deepened. His face clouded over again, and he laid down in silence, sulking.

Elsie had only played with Moss a few times and still acted heartbroken; yet Yunice, whoโ€™d raised Moss single-handedly, let him die without a fight. His body had been dumped like trash in the storage room and tossed out for disposalโ€”she didnโ€™t even stop to take a last look.

Paulโ€™s fists slowly curled into tight balls, his knuckles creaking with the strain. Yunice had the nerve to play the victim, like I am the one whoโ€™d failed her, when reallyโ€”she is the coldest, most heartless one of them all! One day, everyone would see her true colors.

Outside the gates of the Powell mansion, Wyattโ€™s Vertex was parked on the roadside. Jordan stood next to the car with Yunice.

โ€œMs. Saunders,โ€ he said, โ€œyouโ€™re really not going to stay in Pavilion Hall? If you turn it down this time, there wonโ€™t be another chance.โ€

Wyatt wasnโ€™t the type to offer twice.

Yunice smiled politely. โ€œIโ€™m used to living on my own. Please thank Mr. Cooper for his kindness.โ€

Jordan hesitated. โ€œMs. Saunders, canโ€™t you tell that Wyattโ€™s pissed?โ€

And she wanted to thank him while he was fumingโ€”that was just asking to poke the bear.

Yunice smiled again. โ€œHeโ€™s got a temper. Maybe he could use more lemongrass tea in the mornings.โ€

Faced with Yuniceโ€™s polite, neutral smile, Jordan finally realizedโ€”she wasnโ€™t clueless; she was pretending not to understand. She knew exactly what she was doing. Since he couldnโ€™t sway her, Jordan had no choice but to climb into the car himself.

Posture screaming do not approach. Wyatt said coldly, โ€œDrive.โ€

Great. Holding a grudge again.

The Vertex roared off in a blast of wind, its exhaust practically venting Wyattโ€™s displeasure in Yuniceโ€™s direction.

Yunice didnโ€™t take Wyattโ€™s temper to heart. She had no intention of staying in Pavilion Hall. There was too much she still needed to do; she wasnโ€™t ready to get tangled up in his complicated world.

Not long after, Gillโ€™s Volkswagen pulled up in front of her. Yunice walked over, just about to open the back door when a voice called out behind her.

โ€œMs. Saunders.โ€ There was a sneer in the voice.

Yunice subtly shielded the car door with her body and closed it behind her before turning around. Standing in front of her was Elianna. Yunice didnโ€™t need to hear another word to guess what this was about.

She spoke first. โ€œMy engagement was arranged by Jackson. I had no say in the matter. If youโ€™re unhappy, Ms. Elianna, feel free to take it up with Mr. Jackson. Honestly. I hope you succeed.โ€

โ€œCut the act,โ€ Elianna sneered, eyes low and scornful. โ€œIโ€™ve never once considered you a threat. You can pretend to be some innocent virgin all you wantโ€”heโ€™s never going to like you.โ€

As she spoke, she tossed a package at Yunice. Yunice caught it and opened itโ€”inside was the blood-stained pajama pants she had discarded in Pavilion Hall.

She looked at Elianna and pondered. Seriously? Are you mentally okay?

Eliannaโ€™s lip curled. โ€œYou humiliated Paul at the table, then staged that whole blood-on-the-sheets thing to trick Wyatt into thinking youโ€™re still pure. But I know youโ€™ve been defiled for a long time.โ€

Yunice took a deep breath. Some people were just born brainless, and they seemed to be getting worse. She let out a sharp laugh and fired back, โ€œMs. Elianna, do you not get periods?โ€

Elianna froze.

Yunice held up the pants and kept going. โ€œActually, Iโ€™m a man. My periods are fake. This blood? Totally made up. Happy now?โ€

Her expression said loud and clear: You really donโ€™t have two brain cells to rub together.

Eliannaโ€™s face turned beet red.

Yunice rolled her eyes and got into the front passenger seat.

Yunice glanced toward the backseat and finally allowed a rare look of relief to cross her face.

Gill kept his hands on the wheel. โ€œMs. Saunders, Ms. Taylor called. She said sheโ€™s out of medication and wants two full rounds for the next treatmentโ€”one to pick up, and one that she wants you to deliver personally to her house.โ€

Yunice raised an eyebrow. She understood Taylorโ€™s message loud and clear.

The next morning, someone showed up at Virtue Hall to pick up the medicine.
