Chapter 220
Frank couldnโt shake the feeling that there was more to Edith changing her ID than just avoiding detection.
Phoebe replied, โIt was so she could both leech off your luck and steal from Brenda. She and Brenda are actually tied. When Brendaโs luck declines, Edithโs luck increases.โ
No wonder Phoebe had felt an inexplicable sense of unease the first time. It turned out Edithโs role was even more significant than Sienaโsโshe was operating on both fronts.
And it was no wonder Brenda hated Edith so much. Brenda had gone through a long stretch of misfortune in the past. Back when she was at Opheliaโs maternal home, she had suffered quite a bit. Even after moving in next door to Edith, she kept encountering unlucky incidents. It was only after taking Percivalโs advice that Brendaโs grandfather had found a horoscope artifact to suppress the bad luck. Slowly, things started returning to normal.
Phoebe had always had a gut feeling that in her past life, after she died, Brenda would have followed the same fate. Now, it seemed almost certain.
Brenda was shocked. She pointed at herself and asked, โWaitโฆ so Iโm the one actually tied to Edith?โ
Phoebe nodded. โYes.โ
At first, she hadnโt wanted Brenda to know too much; she was worried it would be dangerous. But who wouldโve thought that Brenda had already been dragged into the mess just like her? Since there was no way to escape, they had no choice but to face it together.
In hindsight, Phoebe had never considered that Edith and Brenda could be caught in a direct battle for luck.
Brenda let out a dry laugh. โWow. No wonder weโre best friendsโwe both got screwed over by men, both got tied to people stealing our luck, and worst of all, our enemies are our own sisters.โ
Hearing this, both Reece and Frank looked a little uncomfortable.
Frank cleared his throat awkwardly. โBrenda, donโt talk nonsense. When were you ever screwed over by a man?โ
Brenda shot him a cold smirk. โWasnโt it you?โ
Frank immediately denied it. โI never screwed you over. Absolutely not.โ
Brenda sneered, โWell, in my book, you did.โ Then she mocked, โServes you right. You kept a ticking time bomb by your side, thinking you could use her to go after your dad and stepmother. But in reality, sheโs been treating you like a power bankโdraining your luck whenever she wants. One day, when the time is right, sheโll suck your luck dry, and youโll be left as nothing but a withered old tree!โ
Frank was speechless. That really made him feel awkward. He had to admitโheโd overestimated himself before. But who wouldโve thought about fateโstealing in a normal situation? He had only known that Edith had a horoscope master backing her, which meant it would be easy for her to deal with Brenda. That was why, until he was confident he could take down Faithโs backer, he hadnโt dared to confirm his relationship with Brendaโor even treat her too well. He had thought he was protecting her.
But at the same time, he had liked her too much to let her stay in the country, worried that some other man would steal her away. So he lured her into following him abroad, making her work and live by his side. Yet in front of Edith, he had deliberately ignored her. Thinking back on it now, he really had been stupid, just like Reece.
Frank sighed and nodded. โYouโre right. I deserved it.โ He had thought he was in control, but in reality, he was being played. The whole time, there was another layer of the game he didnโt even see. He almost wanted to cry from frustration.
Reece, however, was focused on something else. โWait a minute,โ he said suddenly, turning to Brenda. โYou just said you and Phoebe are the same. Does that mean Phoebe also has that relationship?โ
Brenda glanced at Phoebe. Seeing that Phoebe didnโt seem to care whether the three men knew, she nodded. โYes.โ
Reeceโs eyes shrank slightly. He hesitated, then asked, โThat personโฆ itโs not Sienna, is it?โ Besides Sienna, he couldnโt think of anyone else.
Brenda raised an eyebrow. โWow, when did you get so smart?โ
Reece was speechless. His expression darkened, and he muttered, โHow could this happenโฆ?โ That meant that when he had helped Sienna, he had almost played a part in stealing Phoebeโs luck! His heart clenched with guilt. What the hell had he done!
Unable to hold it in, he looked at Phoebe, deeply remorseful. โIโm sorry!โ
Phoebe shot him a cold glance. โI have no use for those three words anymore.โ Meaningโit was too late.
Reece felt even worse, but he had no idea how to fix it.
Leon, who had been processing all of this, finally snapped out of his shock. โSoโฆ Sienna coming to my familyโฆ was all arranged?โ He hesitated, then asked, โDoes that mean her birth date and time are actually the same as Phoebeโs?โ
The Jenkins family had taken Sienna in because their horoscope master had suggested it. They were told it would help them find their real daughter. Even changing her name to Phoebeโs old name, Sienna, was meant to โbalance fate.โ The master had even recommended changing her birthday to match Phoebeโsโto ensure that Phoebe wouldnโt die unexpectedly and could live more smoothly outside the family. Leonโs parents had agreed and had helped alter Siennaโs ID and birthdate accordingly. So in his mind, Siennaโs real birthdate was different from Phoebeโsโshe had just taken her place. But now, according to Phoebe and Brenda, everything they had been told was a lie.
Phoebe confirmed, โYes. She was born just minutes after me, but still within the same hour. And the reason she took my name, my birthdayโit was all just another way to steal my luck.โ
Leon said, โSo for all these years, your family has been played for fools by Sienna and the people backing her? She also deformed and framed the truth about her and Siennaโs birth chart.โ
If they werenโt warned, theyโd probably end up helping the enemy without even realizing it. And if she wanted to stop the mastermind, she needed their control over the Jenkins, Hill, and Harvey families. That meant stopping their children from stealing, siphoning, and also influencing them.
Leonโs face changed. โAre you sure?โ He had never imagined that Siennaโs arrival had been part of a scheme.
Phoebe shrugged. โBelieve it or not. But while Iโve had my luck stolen, you all arenโt any better off.โ Then she gave Leon a mocking smile and said, โTo put it simplyโyou guys are just well-fed pigs waiting for slaughter. When the time is right, youโll be the next ones to be drained dry.โ
Leon was speechless. That comparisonโฆ But if it was true, then he needed to consider his next move.
