“Mr. Button?” Johanna huffed, visibly agitated. “That girl, Freya, has alienated Mr. Sutton! How could the Sutton family ever accept her as Mrs. Sutton now? It’s better to get rid of her while someone still wants her. Being Mrs. Upton beats fighting over our inheritance!”

Bang! Just then, the Dawson family’s front door was kicked open. Johanna jumped at the sudden noise. Looking up, she saw Freya standing in the doorway.

“How… how are you here?” Johanna was horrified, not expecting to see Freya. Wasn’t Freya supposed to have been driven to a hotel by then?

“Why am I here, you ask?” Freya’s voice was icy cold. Hanna suddenly felt guilty.

“Johanna, I never thought… Although we never shared a mother-daughter bond, we’ve lived under the same roof for many years. My dad was good to you, yet you sold me off to some scumbag.”

“I was only thinking of your best interest,” Johanna asserted, trying to sound convincing. “You couldn’t be Mrs. Sutton, but being Mrs. Upton is great, too! I was doing this all for you, and now you’re blaming me?”

Hearing Johanna’s nauseating words, Freya didn’t hide the disgust in her eyes. “How can you be so shameless?”

“Freya! How dare you talk to my mom like that?” Leland stood before Johanna, aggressive and defensive. “Mr. Upton’s interest in you is a stroke of good luck! My mom was just trying to find you a good match. After offending Mr. Sutton, who else would marry you? Who would dare to have you?”

Watching the mother and son play off each other, Freya suddenly laughed. Seeing Freya laugh made Johanna’s skin crawl.

“So, Johanna, you were being kind, huh?” Freya said, smiling, prompting Johanna to smile and step forward. “Of course, I was being kind! I’ve watched you grow up. How could I harm you?”

Seeing Johanna’s act, Freya raised an eyebrow, smiling. “What should we do then? Tonight, Mr. Beckett announced our relationship to everyone, and Johanna, you’ve sold me off to Hanley’s bed. Mr. Beckett was so furious. When he came to get me out of Hanley’s room, he turned red. He said he wanted to have a word with you.”

“What?” Johanna was stunned, her voice trembling. “Mr. Beckett? You mean… Ronan?”

“Who else could it be?”

With Freya’s confirmation, Johanna’s face turned even paler. “Could it be… Mr. Beckett is interested in you?”

She had heard about Freya attending an event with Ronan but thought it was a coincidence. After all, Ronan was known for his indifference to women. How could he possibly have taken a sudden interest in Freya?
