Chapter 42
Johannaโs face went dark as a storm cloud. โBeing the lady of the Dawson family isnโt as easy as you think, dear. If I canโt sort out this financial mess, you might as well hit the road sooner rather than later. Donโt say I didnโt warn you.โ Johannaโs smile faded.
After slaving away for the Dawson family for years and barely mourning my late husband, the company hits a snag. Without reaping any benefits, Iโm expected to settle the Dawson familyโs debts? Johanna pondered. Over my dead body.
โFreya, I know youโre the most reasonable one here. You wouldnโt let me handle the debts alone. Please, Iโm begging you! Go and smooth things over with Mr. Sutton. If you can get him to go easy on us, it could clear up all our companyโs issues!โ
Watching Johanna grovel, Freya smiled slightly and said, โJohanna, I might consider it.โ
โI knew it, Freya, youโre always understanding. You wouldnโt let the company suffer!โ
โHot rush, Johanna. I havenโt mentioned my conditions yet.โ
โConditions? Johanna was surprised. Conditions? There are conditions?โ
โOf course, there are conditions if you want me to handle this.โ
Seeing Freya lounging on the sofa with an air of ease, Johanna felt a fire burning in her chest but kept her temper in check. She said, โFreya, itโs just a matter of apologizing to Mr. Sutton, showing a bit of humility. You werenโt always this calculating. Whatโs changed?โ
Freya smirked. โDad taught me to be gentle and virtuous. This calculating side? I must have learned it from you, Johanna.โ
Freyaโs smile didnโt wane as she slowly said, โJohanna, if you want me to persuade Mr. Sutton, Iโll do it. But I canโt guarantee heโll be merciful to the Dawson Group.โ
Before Freya could respond, she continued, โAnd if I do go, the companyโs affairs will no longer concern you. Whether the Dawson Group sinks into debt or flourishes is none of your business.โ
โYouโฆโ
โIf you donโt agree, I wonโt bother going.โ
Freya threw caution to the wind. โLet Mr. Sutton ruin the Dawson Group if it comes to that. I wonโt owe any debts then, and itโll be up to you to find a solution, considering youโve been running the Dawson familyโs business all this while. The shareholders should come after you for their lost money, not me.โ
Confronted with Freyaโs seriousness, Johanna could only grit her teeth and agree, โFine! I agree!โ
Johanna thought, โWhat does Freya know? Sheโs a pampered heiress who canโt even understand the accounts. How can she manage a company? Sheโd have to come crawling back to me eventually.โ
โSince you agree, Johanna, letโs make it official,โ Freya pulled out a document from her bag, stating Johanna and Lelandโs voluntary resignation from all positions within the Dawson Group.
Johannaโs smile stiffened as she looked at the document. โFreya, weโre family. Do we really need to be this formal?โ
โJohanna, verbal agreements donโt hold up in court. Itโs better to be thorough.โ
Freya smiled gently. โDonโt worry, Johanna. Once you sign, Iโll head straight to the Sutton Group and talk to Mr. Sutton. If you donโt trust me, we can draw up a contract, and Iโll sign it, too.โ
Left with no choice, Johanna signed the document with a heavy heart.
Once Johanna had signed, Freya pocketed the contract with a smile. โSince thatโs settled, I guess I have to make the trip.โ
Johanna could only stare at Freyaโs smiling face, feeling a chill down her spine.
An hour later, Freya changed into clean, sharp denim shorts, a tight white tank top, and a denim jacket. Employees at the Sutton Group couldnโt help but stare as Freya walked in, their eyes widening in surprise.
Wearing sunglasses, Freya approached the reception desk and announced, โIโm here to see Mr. Sutton!โ
Seeing a stunningly beautiful woman with long legs and perfect skin, the receptionist asked, โIโm sorry, Miss. Do you have an appointment?โ
Removing her sunglasses, Freya revealed her identity. โIโm Freya.โ
The receptionistโs jaw dropped. โDawson, Ms. Dawson?โ
โIs he in?โ asked Freya.
