Chapter 13
Eloise was trying to have her cake and eat it too. She wanted Kieran, yet she also wanted to maintain her air of superiority and pride. After facing numerous trials and tribulations, Eloise and Kieran finally ended up together. And there was Freya, turned into the tragic sacrifice for their love, deceived and played by both, only to meet a sorrowful demise.
Freya thought, “Why stand in their way if Kieran and Eloise were truly in love?”
With a faint smile, Freya said, “Audrey, it has nothing to do with Ms. Harwood. I decided to call off the engagement with Mr. Sutton. Besides… Mr. Sutton and Ms. Harwood truly love each other, and I wish to see them happy.”
Audrey was angry. “Nonsense! You were the granddaughter-in-law I had chosen. No other woman deserves to set foot in the Sutton family!”
Right after Audrey’s words fell, Eloise’s coffee cup slipped from her grasp. “Ellie!” Kieran had just entered when he saw Eloise, pale as a ghost. He immediately rushed over to check her injuries, only to find her wrist was slightly bleeding, her fingers burnt by the hot coffee.
Kieran snapped, “Grandma! Ellie is already hurt. The doctor said if the cut had been any deeper, she could have lost the use of her hand! You shouldn’t be so aggressive!”
Watching Kieran defend Eloise, Audrey scoffed, saying, “It was just a bit of hot coffee, and not even I asked her to carry it. Tell Ms. Harwood not to be stubborn if you’re going to lecture someone. Even if she serves coffee for a lifetime, I will never allow her into my family!”
Kieran frowned deeply, and his gaze shifted to Freya sitting beside Audrey. “Did you spill the beans?” He had ensured the news of Eloise’s injury was kept under wraps and had warned Freya, too. He didn’t expect Freya to have the guts. Audrey fumed. “What does this have to do with Freya? It was Ms. Harwood who insisted on apologizing! Kieran, since everyone is here, why don’t you apologize to Freya properly and let Ms. Harwood know she should give up any hopes of marrying into the Sutton family? Our families will never be associated!”
“Audrey, there’s no need for trouble. Calling off the engagement with Mr. Sutton is enough for me…”
Before Freya could finish, Kieran interrupted coldly, “Freya, cut the act! If it weren’t for your nonsense in front of Grandma, Ellie wouldn’t have faced this humiliation!”
“Kieran… I decided to come here and apologize. It has nothing to do with Ms. Dawson. I’ll leave now and never see you again. Ms. Dawson is the one who deserves to marry you. Don’t fight with her over me.”
Pale-faced and fighting back tears, Eloise looked so stubborn yet vulnerable that anyone would feel compassion for her. That was typical Eloise, always saying one thing and then doing the complete opposite.
Sure enough, the next moment, Eloise collapsed into Kieran’s arms. With a cold glance at Freya, Kieran scooped Eloise up. As Kieran was about to leave with Eloise in his arms, Audrey shouted, “Kieran! Stop right there!” He paused, and Audrey immediately added, “Freya is your fiancée. What will people think if you leave with another woman?”
“Grandma, our family doesn’t need a woman who plays both sides as its lady, and I don’t need a wife…”
