Chapter 956: Discovered Something
By the time Roxanne awoke, the sun was high. As she opened her eyes, she saw Archie, Benny, and Estella eagerly watching her.
"Mommy!" "Ms. Jarvis!"
The children greeted her simultaneously, giggling as they embraced her. Roxanne's heart melted at the sight of their cheerful faces. She stroked their heads before slowly sitting up, still feeling slightly disoriented from her sleep. A nagging feeling persisted that she had forgotten something.
The children, however, gave her little time to dwell on it. "How are you guys feeling?" she asked, concerned. She had hoped they would recover after taking their medicine last night, but Benny was still unwellโthe reason she'd agreed to let them stay overnight. She wondered how much better they were now.
Benny offered a guilty smile. "I'm fine now. I feel much better after a good night's sleep!"
Roxanne checked them over again, reassured by their apparent recovery. Just as she released their hands, Estella's stomach rumbled loudly. Roxanne then remembered they hadn't eaten much when they fell ill. She hadn't anticipated they would stay the night and hadn't prepared enough food. The leftover food from yesterday was stale, and she hesitated to give them anything she'd brought after last night's incident.
Without hesitation, she stood. "Let's go back," she said, leading the way out of the tent.
As soon as she stepped out, she saw the Bentley a short distance away, its headlights off. Memories of the previous night flooded back, and she realized she had no idea where Lucian had gone. The thought of him brought back his question from the night before, momentarily confusing her.
When she regained her composure, Lucian was standing before her, examining the children.
"Daddy! Where did you go?" Estella asked, her curiosity evident.
She'd assumed he had already left when she woke. Lucian patted her head. "I have something to discuss with Ms. Jarvis," he said in a low voice. "Go play in the tent with Archie and Benny for a while."
He didn't inquire about their condition; he'd seen through their attempt to bring Roxanne and him together. Although Estella was puzzled, she obediently complied.
Roxanne, tense, eyed Lucian warily. If he wanted to continue their earlier conversation, she wasn't sure how to respond. Her apprehension was clear on her face. Lucian's gaze softened, but he remained composed. "I discovered something," he said. "Come and have a look."
Roxanne immediately understood his "discovery" related to the bacteria. Her wariness faded, and she nodded solemnly, following him.
