Chapter 883: Distant

Upon reaching home, Roxanne paused at the mansion's entrance, composing herself before entering. The children shuffled closer, their concern evident. "Mommy," they asked, "has Essie gone back?"

Roxanne's brow furrowed. Unsure how to answer, she hesitated. It was only her assumption that Lucian had returned Estella home. Archie and Benny, knowing her well, saw her hesitation and guessed she'd been rebuffed again.

"Don't worry, Mommy," Archie said, attempting to sound reassuring. "Essie will be fine. Mr. Farwell will surely call if anything happens to her."

Roxanne's eyelashes fluttered. He was right. While she resented Lucian, he always contacted her regarding Estella. She shouldn't worry, but wait patiently for his call.

Then she recalled Catalina's hesitant words earlier. Anxiety returned. Her actions yesterday might have provoked him; he might not even contact her. Waiting wasn't a good idea. Thinking of Estella exasperated her.

Archie and Benny saw Roxanne's distress but were unsure how to help. Thinking of Estella, they too felt perturbed. A heavy silence settled in the living room.

Suddenly, Roxanne's phone rang. Her heart leaped. Remembering the children's words, she almost hesitated to look, fearing disappointment.

"Ms. Jarvis, have you reached home safely?"

It was Jack's voice. Roxanne's gaze dimmed, but she replied politely, "Yes, I'm home. Thank you for your concern, Mr. Damaris."

Then, remembering something, she asked, "Are you and Dr. Galloway still at the research institute?"

Jack chuckled, mentioning Colby. "We've separated. I'm on my way home to the Damaris residence now."

Roxanne nodded slightly. "Be careful on your way back."

Jack smiled. "You looked troubled today. Feel free to reach out if you need anything." He'd said that before.

A peculiar sensation arose, and Roxanne paused before thanking him indifferently. "Thank you for your kindness." Without letting him respond, she added, "All right. I'll hang up now."

Jack chuckled lightly. "I called to check on you, but you seem distant."

Roxanne remained silent. I'm not sure if he's flirting. I'd better not say anything.

Jack, sensing her reluctance, said goodbye and ended the call. It had been a long conversation.

Archie and Benny, having heard it was Jack, watched intently. Immediately after Roxanne hung up, they asked impatiently, "Mommy, what did Mr. Damaris say?"
