Chapter 825: Proactive

Regarding the public outcry, Colby could only offer a few statements from the research institute's perspective. These did little to quell the situation, but it gradually subsided. Harvey's interview the following day completely reversed the negative tide. Colby was humbled to learn Lucian was responsible and ashamed of his failure to assist Roxanne with such a seemingly minor issue.

His insecurity deepened recalling his encounter with Lucian at Roxanne's home. Their presence together at that hour suggested a close relationship. The thought intensified Colby's feelings of inadequacy. He'd believed he could quietly remain by Roxanne's side, but witnessing her potential connection with another man and recognizing his own unlikeliness of success, he realized his selflessness had limits.

After their conversation, Hector steered the discussion back to the project. "Dr. Jarvis," he said, "your medical knowledge is impressive for your age. You've even gained Professor Lambert's favor; I believe he sees great potential in you, as evidenced by his immediate support."

Roxanne, reflecting on Harvey, responded with respect. "Professor Lambert treats all his students the same. He would have done the same for any of my classmates in a similar situation."

Hector's admiration for Roxanne grew. "You're already exceptional and, with this project's benefits, will surely become a role model for the younger generation. Professor Lambert will be proud!"

"You're too kind, Mr. Damaris," Roxanne replied with a polite smile. "I promise I'll do my best."

Colby, seated beside Roxanne, watched her intently. He felt increasingly outmatched. If she successfully completed the project, the gap between them would widen further. He furrowed his brows, then spoke softly, "I want to improve myself through this opportunity too. Please let me know if you need anything; I'll do whatever I can to help."

Hector, having a favorable impression of Colby from their prior meeting, was further impressed by his eagerness to assist. "It would be wonderful if you could lend a hand, Dr. Galloway," he said, his eyes filled with admiration. "That way, I won't have to worry about the future of our country's medical field!"

Jack, however, observed Colby with suspicion. Recalling Colby's previously reserved demeanor at the institute, Jack found his sudden proactiveness unusual. He'd also noticed Colby's furtive glances at Roxanne, solidifying his belief in an ulterior motive. Still, he chose not to speculate openly, knowing Colby would eventually need his involvement in the project. He subtly raised an eyebrow before offering a conciliatory gesture. "I'm grateful for your willingness to help, Dr. Galloway. To you."

Colby readily accepted the peace offering, and both men raised their drinks.
