Chapter 747: Drunk

Inside his study, Lucian frowned at his unfinished work. Suddenly, he heard approaching footsteps, followed by a loud knock. He looked away from his computer, his frown deepening. The Farwell household staff usually rested by now. Even if not, no one would normally disturb him while he worked. The forceful knocking could only mean one person: Aubree. What was she up to now? he wondered.

The knocking persisted. Having recently tucked Estella in, he opened the door to prevent her from waking. He found Aubree standing there, clearly intoxicated. He could smell the wine even from the doorway.

"You're drunk," he said in a low voice. "Go back to your room and rest." He started to close the door.

To his surprise, Aubree hugged his waist. He stopped, stared at her arms, and coldly ordered, "Let go."

Slurring her words, she said, "I won't... I love you, Lucian. Don't cancel the engagement. What's so good about Roxanne, anyway? She left you, but I've waited six years..."

Sonya had said similar things. Despite Aubree's sincerity, Lucian remained unmoved, a touch of disdain flickering in his eyes. For six years, she'd pretended affection while secretly bullying Estella. And now this?

She clung to him, her breath heavy with alcohol. His face hardened. He grabbed her wrists, pulling them away. She winced, releasing him and stumbling back, clutching her wrist.

Expressionless, Lucian looked down at her. "The only reason you're still here is because of my mother," he said coldly. "Behave yourself, and you can stay until you can return home. Misbehave, and I'll have you removed."

The pain sobered Aubree slightly. Fear flickered in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Lucian," she stammered. "I drank too much. Don't send me away..."

"Get back to your room!" he commanded.

"My legs are weak," she pleaded. "Can you help me?"

He simply raised an eyebrow. For a moment, she felt a flicker of hope. But then, he summoned a housekeeper to escort her. Aubree scowled; she didn't want the housekeeper to see her in this state, but Lucian's cold expression silenced any protest.

Returning to his study, he was met with the lingering smell of alcohol. He opened the windows to air out the room.
