Chapter 729: Silence Is Acquiescence

Meanwhile, Jessica had switched on the morning news early at the Hightower residence, eager to witness Roxanne's humiliation. As anticipated, Roxanne was widely condemned online after the news broke. However, Jessica hadn't expected Jack's defense of Roxanne, nor the subsequent involvement of the Damaris family. Feeling guilty, she quickly orchestrated disruptions at Roxanne's research institute.

Consequently, when Roxanne checked the news at noon, she saw footage of a large crowd of reporters and protestors blocking the institute's entrance. She tensed, immediately heading to the institute. "Their target is me," she thought. "I can't let this affect the institute's employees."

Half an hour later, Roxanne arrived. The moment she appeared, the reporters and crowd surged towards her.

"Ms. Jarvis, do you have anything to say about the online criticism?"

"What's your relationship with Mr. Damaris? Are the internet rumors about your connections true?"

Surrounded by people and a sea of microphones, some thrust into her face, Roxanne, despite her mental preparation, felt overwhelmed, leaning against her car for support. Before she could speak, a reporter interrupted: "Besides you, we've heard about every doctor on the list. How would you evaluate your medical skills?"

Accustomed to such doubt, Roxanne replied, "Our institute's Twitter account has posted all my recent medical projects. Check it for details on my skills." She attempted to continue but was again interrupted. "Even so, your accomplishments are inferior to others on the list. Do you acknowledge that?"

This question brought a frown to Roxanne's face. Many on the list were more experienced; she couldn't deny it. Yet, acknowledging it would tacitly admit insufficient qualifications to work with the Damaris family, confirming the online rumors. Realizing the trap, she hesitated.

Her silence was interpreted as acquiescence, sparking further uproar. Questions bombarded her. Just as she felt helpless, a commotion erupted within the crowd. Their attention shifted, giving Roxanne a brief respite.

Then, a surprised exclamation: "Mr. Farwell?"

Roxanne froze, doubting her ears. Lucian, a man so busy, here?
