Chapter 694: Having Lunch With Me
The tension in the ward lifted the moment a treatment plan was found. Jamie flashed Roxanne a grateful smile upon hearing he would soon recover. โThanks, Ms. Jarvis,โ he whispered.
Roxanneโs expression softened. โIโm just doing my job; no need to thank me. You must have had a rough time.โ
Jamie nodded shyly, anxiety evident on his face. This was the first time someone outside the orphanage had shown him genuine concern. And she was pretty, reminding him of his mother.
Roxanne gently patted his head. โIโve prescribed some medication. Take it as instructed, and youโll get better quickly. Eat properly after discharge. I know itโs difficult, but you must try. Otherwise, youโll suffer again. Understood?โ
Jamie nodded obediently. Roxanne chuckled with relief at his compliance. Jack, watching her patiently comfort Jamie, felt his heart skip a beat.
The orphanage director returned with the medication, profusely thanking them both. Roxanne smiled faintly. โWe were just doing our job. You must have it tough looking after all these children.โ
She pulled out cash from her wallet. โI didnโt bring much, leaving in a hurry. Use this for Jamieโs food; it'll help replenish his nutrients. Call if the orphanage needs anything.โ
โYouโve already done so much! I canโt accept your money. I should be thanking you!โ the director protested.
Roxanne pressed the money into his hand. โIโm a mother of two; I canโt bear to see children suffer. Consider this a small act of motherly love.โ
The director started to speak, but Roxanne smoothly changed the subject to Jamieโs medication. He ultimately accepted the money.
After giving final instructions, Roxanne said goodbye and left with Jack.
โThank you for your guidance, Mr. Damaris. Without your help, Iโd still be struggling with the prescription,โ Roxanne said gratefully as they walked.
Jack arched an eyebrow. โI was just doing my job.โ
Roxanne smiled.
โHoweverโฆโ Jack added.
Roxanne tensed. โWhat is it? Is there an issue with Jamieโs condition?โ
โWhile I was doing my job, I canโt stop you from expressing gratitude. โThanksโ feels insufficient.โ
Roxanne frowned, recognizing the phrasing, though she couldnโt place it. She knew she needed to respond.
โYouโre right, Mr. Damaris. I should have realized. Since itโs almost noon, how about lunch with me?โ she asked.
