Chapter 652: Played Into His Hands
Roxanne woke feeling disoriented and flushed. For a moment, she forgot where she was, struggling to sit up. Only when she recognized Lucian's car did her memory return. She subconsciously glanced at him; he'd already withdrawn his arm, appearing as if nothing had happened. Yet, she couldn't imagine where else she could have been lying but in his embrace. Guilt-ridden, she murmured, "I'm sorry. I dozed off."
Lucian's pensive gaze shifted to her at her words. She squirmed, wanting more distance. His gaze darkened as he noticed. "Ms. Jarvis," he said, "considering your sound sleep, I suppose you found my car quite comfortable."
Roxanne stiffened, avoiding his eyes. "I drank some alcohol," she mumbled, frustration rising. "I tried to stay awake." The thought of sleeping in his arms mortified her. She couldn't recall whether she'd leaned toward him or he'd pulled her close, either possibility making her feel deceitful after her earlier rejection. Imagining his perception of her if she'd thrown herself at him while asleep terrified her. Bracing herself, she explained, "I was drowsy and groggy; please forgive any unintentional rudeness."
He seemed to understand her attempt to distance herself, but he wasn't ready to let her. "Of course," he said solemnly. "I understand you might have sought a more comfortable position; leaning against the window was uncomfortable."
Roxanne looked at him anxiously, her eyes slightly watery from sleep. The dim car lights reflected in them, making her appear exceptionally innocent. Lucian was intrigued. "If you're worried about creasing my shirt," he said, casually smoothing the hem, "don't be. Catalina can take care of it."
Roxanne's unease intensified. She couldn't recall what happened while she was asleep and doubted the sincerity of his words. Why would I throw myself into his arms? she wondered. Yet, his shirt was slightly wrinkled. She wasn't sure if her confusion stemmed from the alcohol or simply waking up.
Lucian's amusement at her frantic expression was evident. She hadn't missed the mischievous grin that crossed his face. The truth dawned on her: he was toying with her. Remembering her panicked behavior, she realized she'd played right into his hands. Annoyed, she sat up straight, her lips pursed.
