Chapter 244: Leaving the Country After Divorce
It wasn't until the plane landed that Roxanne removed her blanket and sat up calmly, her eyes clear. Lucian turned and glanced at her, unsurprised by her lack of grogginess. A pang of self-deprecation struck him, but he remained silent. Even with his reserve, Roxanne avoided him. He feared that if he overstepped, she would vanish as she had six years agoโa difficult search he didn't wish to repeat.
The person sitting next to her remained seated. Roxanne frowned but didn't ask him to move. When most passengers had disembarked, Lucian rose calmly. They exited the plane one after the other. Larry and Cayden waited outside. Larry had seen Lucian sitting next to Roxanne on the plane but couldn't intervene before takeoff. Upon seeing Lucian, Larry offered a polite greeting before turning to Roxanne.
"You don't have a car. I'll take you," Larry offered.
"Thanks, Larry," Roxanne replied with a smile, pointedly ignoring Lucian as she walked towards Larry.
Seeing her smile at another man, Lucian's displeasure was evident. He reached out and grasped her wrist. Her smile faded as she turned to face him.
"Mr. Farwell, what do you want?" Lucian gazed into her eyes, finding only distance and distress, not the slightest warmth. Realizing she wanted no communication, he tightened his grip unconsciously.
"Let me take you," he offered.
"No need," Roxanne replied calmly, forcing a smile. "Mr. Farwell, you're busy. I shouldn't waste your time. Besides, I'm closer to Larry than you, Mr. Farwell. I'd feel more comfortable with him."
Lucian's expression darkened immediately. Though Roxanne had repeatedly asserted their estrangement, this was the first time she'd explicitly stated her preference for another man.
Ignoring his change of expression, Roxanne glanced at his hand on her wrist, then at the growing number of onlookers.
"Mr. Farwell, thank you, but please let go. Otherwise, rumors of us dating will spread, and I don't want Ms. Pearson to misunderstand."
The mention of Aubree prompted Lucian to release her. Aubree's presence had already caused his mother to intervene and had even caused trouble for Roxanne. He didn't want to cause her further problems. However, Roxanne suspected his compliance stemmed from his concern for his relationship with Aubree. A wave of irony washed over her. If he cares so much about Aubree, why does he constantly bother me?
She shook off his hand and joined Larry.
"Let's go."
Larry nodded to Lucian politely before leading Roxanne to his car. As Lucian watched them leave, the air around him grew colder. Cayden remained silent until Larry's car departed.
"Mr. Farwell, we should go," Cayden said tentatively.
Lucian hummed in response, his gaze dark.
