Chapter 2054: What Can You Do?
"So what if I did it? Do you have any evidence?" Winnie sneered, a smug expression on her face. After the attack, her anger needed an outlet, and Roxanne's fury provided the perfect target. Even if she were beaten again, Winnie thought, this "bitch" wouldn't dare kill her. She arched a brow, sensing her arm was regaining mobility. Wiping her face, she slowly rose. "Roxanne, your mother has been dead for over a decade. Do you think you can find any evidence? Even if you know I'm the culprit, what can you do? Hahaha! You can keep using your needles; perhaps my pain receptors will become immune!"
Roxanne was stunned. Boundless rage threatened to consume her, a volcanic eruption held back at the last moment. Words and actions seemed futile against Winnie's evil. For the first time, Roxanne felt a searing pain in her chest, her breathing ragged and shallow.
Lucian sensed her distress and embraced her, whispering soothing words. "Calm down, darling. Don't be anxious. I'll find a way. Think of the children; try not to get too agitated. She's goading you; don't fall for it."
Roxanne's vision swam, her blood pressure spiking. Lucian's warmth helped her regain composure. Exhausted, she panted heavily, her body trembling. Lucian held her tighter, his hand covering her abdomen. "Darling, don't worry. The childrenโArchie, Benny, Estella, Seward, and Norcenโwouldn't want to see you like this."
Hearing her children's names, a surge of energy coursed through her, calming her down. But Winnie continued, "I never thought Grant would find out after all these years. My scheme wasn't perfect. Interestingly, your dad wants to cover it up. Roxanne, you saved Grant's life. How does it feel? It's not the first time he betrayed you, right? Hahaha!"
Her laughter was chilling. Roxanne leaned against her husband, pulling herself together. One thought dominated her mind: Winnie will pay.
"Winnie, there's no statute of limitations for lawsuits in our country. As long as I find evidence, your demise is inevitable," Roxanne replied calmly.
Winnie showed no fear, her expression crazed. "Really? Then I'll wait and see how you'll make me 'meet my end.'" She snorted. Over a decade had passed. What evidence could Roxanne possibly find? Since Grant noticed the anomaly in the medical records, Winnie had been anticipating this. The records only indicated heavy metal poisoningโa case that raised no alarm then. What significance did a re-examination hold? Ultimately, evidence was key: witness testimony or physical evidence. No one saw her; the heavy metals were long gone.
