Chapter 1953: A Pitiful Sight

At the park, Roxanne and Lucian set up a simple campsite, pitching a tent and spreading a waterproof mat. Lucian then cooked a meal for the children using simple utensils. The sight warmed Roxanne's heart; his thoughtfulness would help the children overcome their resentment. She offered to help, and once the food was ready, she offered plates to the children.

Meanwhile, Grant arrived at the appointed time, his clothes shabby, his gait unsteady. He carried a bag containing new, branded clothes and three emerald pendants. From a distance, he quietly watched the children enjoy their parents' company, a complex expression flitting across his face.

"I have no choice but to comply with Mr. Crawford's demand," he muttered. "The five million I previously had was seized by creditors. I have no way to repay it, and I don't want to remain poor forever!"

Grant steeled his resolve and called Roxanne. Lucian, having already noticed Grant, periodically glanced in his direction, assessing the sincerity of his concern for the children. He observed that a genuine affection would lead to an immediate approach.

Upon receiving the call, Roxanne located her father. His appearance seemed even worse than before; he cut a pitiful, desolate figure.

"Lucian, Grant is here. What do you plan to do?" Roxanne asked.

Lucian responded calmly, "Don't worry. Let him come and see the children. He does deserve it as their grandfather."

Grant approached meekly after receiving permission. A faint smile touched his weathered face, his eyes softening. Even though he was acting according to plan, the sight of his energetic grandchildren sparked a sudden warmth within him. (Mr. Crawford had promised that all he needed to do was get close to them and provide information; he likely wouldn't be forced to harm them.)

"Roxanne, is this Archie? Is this Benny? They look so alike!" he mumbled, his gaze then settling on Estella. His smile broadened. "Essie, don't be shy. I'm your grandfather!"

Archie and Benny remained indifferent, inheriting Lucian's reserved nature. Estella, however, blinked curiously before asking Roxanne, "Mommy, is he our grandfather?"

After Roxanne and Lucian nodded, Estella politely nodded to Grant. "Nice to meet you, Granddad!"

Grant was surprised by her immediate acceptance. Archie and Benny, after exchanging glances, followed suit, greeting him with a "Hello, Granddad," though their expressions remained distant. Being more perceptive than Estella, they were aware of his past mistreatment of Roxanne.

Grant, after acknowledging their greetings, produced the new clothes and three exquisitely crafted boxes. "Roxanne, Mr. Farwell, I've bought some outfits for the children. They should fit perfectly. And here are three emerald pendants. They aren't expensive; it's not necessary to wear them. I just wanted them to have something to remember me by."

Seeing Lucian's approving look, Roxanne accepted the gifts. Grant's smile widened. He nodded to the children. "Kids, thank you. I'm really happy to see you all. Well, I think I should go now. You guys continue to have fun."
