Chapter 1765: What Is His Motive?
โGot it. Iโll be more careful around her,โ Roxanne agreed with a smile, understanding her best friendโs concern.
Madilyn was satisfied. Soon, they were chatting about other things, the atmosphere relaxed.
Meanwhile, Jonathan returned to the Queen family home from the police station after handling Jackโs case. He found his sister Frieda on the couch, watching television, occasionally glancing toward the door.
Friedaโs expression brightened upon seeing him. โI saw the news about Jackโs arrest, Jonathan. Roxanneโs awake, right?โ
Jonathan nodded. โYes. She regained consciousness last night. We were busy with Jackโs case and didnโt have time to tell you.โ
Roxanneโs awakening was thanks to Friedaโs engagement of Peregrineโs services; informing Frieda was only right. He expected chagrin, but saw no displeasure on her face. Then, her meaningful voice cut through the air:
โOld Mr. Lomax must have played a pivotal role, huh? Did Lucian say anything about it?โ She was clearly angling for credit.
Jonathanโs brows furrowed slightly; he felt a touch of irritation. Her contribution had been crucial, so Lucian thanking her was natural. However, she should have let him offer his appreciation. Moreover, helping Roxanne was, in a way, atonement for past actions. How could she ask for a reward?
Receiving no response, Friedaโs expression turned resentful. โYou know how difficult it was to convince Old Mr. Lomax! I spent tremendous effort saving Roxanne. Regardless of my past, I donโt owe her anything anymore!โ
Jonathanโs expression darkened. โWhat are you talking about?โ
โItโs true! Youโre close to her and saved her, but not me! Even if she saved Grandpa, the herbs we gave her repaid that debt. Iโm not doing her such a huge favor for nothing!โ Frieda retorted angrily.
โShut up!โ
Jonathanโs face thundered. Staring intently at his sister, he demanded, โTell me the truth. How did you get Old Mr. Lomax to help? Did you really find his contact online? Or was it the man behind you?โ
He doubted Peregrineโs contact information was easily obtained. He hadnโt pressed it before due to lack of time. But now, given Friedaโs insistence on a thank-you, he needed answers.
He stared at her. โWas he also the one who told you to say all this? Whatโs his motive?โ
His questions struck Frieda like cannonballs. She hadnโt discussed how to answer them with Shawn. Guilt overwhelmed her. She opened her mouth, but no justification came.
Jonathanโs heart sank. โYou ignored everything I told you, huh?โ
