Chapter 1603: You Do Not Need To Worry
The children's expressions made Roxanne suspect something was amiss, but she refrained from immediate inquiry, especially in Lucian's presence. After dinner, she planned to take them outside, but Lucian suggested, "I wonder how Jonathan's doing. Why don't you call him?"
Roxanne, deciding to prioritize the medicinal herb supplier, called Jonathan. She could question the children later at bedtime. She went to the study to make the call.
Jonathan, surprised by the callโexpecting Lucian to pressure himโgave a detailed explanation. Their conversation concluded with a discussion about her relationship with Lucian.
Meanwhile, sensing something was wrong, the children sweetly announced, "Daddy, we're going to play in the garden." They quietly left.
Lucian frowned and followed them. When the trio saw him, their faces fell. "Tell me what happened this afternoon," he said solemnly.
Archie and Benny hung their heads. Estella, though unaware of the full story, summarized for Lucian: "Grandma took us to the amusement park, then she took me to the mall. Archie and Benny came home alone." She felt bad, knowing it was dangerous.
Lucian's expression changed. He looked at the boys. "Was that all? Why didn't Grandma bring you two back?"
The boys glanced at their sister. "We didn't want to go," they replied softly.
Lucian's frown deepened as they avoided his gaze. "Estella, go inside. I need to talk to your brothers."
Estella obeyed, leaving her father and brothers in the garden. Lucian knelt, assuring his sons, "Tell me. I promise it stays between us."
His gentle approach only increased their distress. They were clearly worried. He caressed their heads. "Mommy and I worry if you don't tell us. Do you want us to worry constantly?"
The boys pursed their lips. Archie extended a finger, asking for a pinky promise: "Daddy, promise you won't argue with Grandma about this."
A disturbing thought struck Lucian. He linked his pinky with Archie's. Benny then blurted out the whole story:
"Grandma took us to the amusement park and let us play alone. We waited a long time for her, but she didn't come back. We came home by ourselves." He added softly, "Daddy, you promised not to be angry at Grandma. See, Archie and I are fine. You don't need to worry."
Archie nodded. "And Estella's okay. Benny and I can look after ourselves; we're used to traveling alone."
