Chapter 1182
Just as they were discussing whether to search for Roxanne, the doorbell rang unexpectedly.
"Is Mommy home?" Benny leaped from the couch, his excitement evident. Archie sprang up as well, and the two boys hurried to the door, activating the video intercom. Their faces fell when they saw who was there.
"Archie, Benny, it's me. Open the door, quickly," Cayden said, his voice unusually gentle, tinged with guilt.
The boys reluctantly opened the door. "What's the matter, Mr. Lawson? Did Mommy send you?"
Cayden's gaze was troubled. "Yes. I'm taking you both to see her."
Benny's eyes lit up, but Archie's heart sank. "It's late," he worried aloud. "If Mommy wanted to see us, she would have come herself. Since she sent Mr. Lawson, something must have happened." He looked at Cayden gravely. "Did something happen to Mommy, Mr. Lawson?"
Cayden hesitated, unsure how to tell the boy the truth. A moment passed before he murmured, "You'll know when we arrive."
Benny's expression froze; he finally sensed something was wrong. Archie, already prepared for bad news, took his brother's hand and nodded at Cayden. "Take us there."
Cayden, unable to meet their eyes, turned and strode toward the car, carrying Archie and Benny inside one after another. The drive was somber.
At the hospital entrance, Zayne's associate was waiting. "Are you Mr. Lawson? Mr. Farwell and the others are upstairs," he said, then looked at Archie and Benny with sympathetic eyes. Their unease deepened.
They were led to the top floor. Lucian stood at a hospital room door, his face impassive, flanked by a group of anxious specialists and Zayne.
Archie and Benny approached him. Lucian glanced at the room, unsure how to break the news. Before he could speak, Archie's calm, adult-like voice cut through the silence. "Did something happen to Mommy? How is she?" He held his brother's hand reassuringly.
Lucian's heart ached at the boy's composure. The silence stretched, and the boys fixed their gaze on the doctors, who visibly faltered under their intense stare.
Finally, Lucian spoke. "Your mother had an accident during an experiment and lost consciousness. But don't worry; her life isn't in danger. She just hasn't woken up yet." He spoke gently.
Archie and Benny's expressions changed. Their unease throughout the day now made terrible sense. Something had happened to their mother.
