Chapter 393

โ€œPlease stop saying these things to him,โ€ Lord Vladya groaned. โ€œHeโ€™s smiling like a thief who just got promoted to head guard. He might forget why weโ€™re here.โ€

Daemonikai smacked him upside the head. โ€œShut it.โ€ But he was still grinning ear to ear.

The healer hid her smile behind a cough. So, the rumors were true. The quickest way to find favor with the Grand Kingโ€ฆ was to speak kindly of his queen. Or better yetโ€“earn her favor directly.

It warmed her to see them this way. Whole. Strong. Hearty. Happy.

โ€œNow, letโ€™s return to the original matter. What can you do for us, old healer?โ€ King Daemonikai asked.

โ€œIโ€™ll begin work immediately on the herbs. Iโ€™m certain something like it exists. Our people have simply never had reason to search for it. Iโ€™ll start gathering ingredients, reviewing ancestral scrolls, and see what I can develop. With luck, Iโ€™ll have good news for you soon.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s excellent,โ€ Daemonikai said, nodding with satisfaction.

The healer turned to Lord Vladya. โ€œAnd you, Second Rulerโ€“I hear tales of the House of Stitches through every quarter of the kingdom. The Grand Ladyโ€™s designs are inspiring awe. No one has forgotten the costume festival with the werewolves. Itโ€™s still talked about in every species.โ€

Now Lord Vladya was the one beaming, his chest swelling with pride. He scratched his head, bashful.

The grand king rolled his eyes. โ€œLook at that face. Now, whoโ€™s forgetting why we are here?โ€

They all laughed.

After dinner, as the servants cleared away the dishes, the energy in the grand dining hall shiftedโ€“as it always did. The large, lively family rose, and as usual, scattered like autumn leaves in the wind.

โ€œIโ€™m off to the training grounds. Alek is waiting,โ€ Scar declared, already halfway to the door.

โ€œMal and I will be in the library, if you need us, Father,โ€ said Viozzidray. Both brothers leaned in to kiss their motherโ€™s cheek before offering Daemonikai a respectful bow and vanishing through the corridor.

โ€œFaval and I are going to see Grand Lord Herodis,โ€ Hasydan, his fifth, added.

โ€œWait.โ€ Daemonikai narrowed his eyes. โ€œYou two are still pestering him, arenโ€™t you?โ€ He folded his arms. โ€œI understand your interest in agriculture, but youโ€™re a handful. The male just had a newborn with his mate; donโ€™t overwhelm him.โ€

โ€œNo, he asked us to come. We didnโ€™t push it,โ€ Hasydan said quickly, raising his hand in surrender. โ€œDid we, Faval?โ€

His sixth son echoed the motion. โ€œWe did not.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ Emeriel asked, her tone sweet, her stare anything but.

โ€œHonest, Mother,โ€ they chorused.

โ€œI donโ€™t believe them,โ€ said a dry voice from across the tableโ€“Heraxiola smiled. โ€œLord Herodis is too kind to them. They practically follow him around like ducklings.โ€

โ€œHey! Mind your own business, Princess Hera!โ€ Faval stuck out his tongue.

โ€œIโ€™m beating your butt once I get up from here,โ€ she deadpanned.

โ€œLanguage, Heraxiola,โ€ Emeriel warned, dabbing at her mouth with her napkin. The barest smile stayed on her face.

โ€œSorry, Mother.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll have to catch me first,โ€ Faval tossed over his shoulder as his brother dragged him away.

Heraxiola shook her head in exasperation. โ€œLord Herodis really needs to put up boundaries with those two. And his mateโ€™s no betterโ€“Lady Amie enables them.โ€

โ€œShe adores them,โ€ Siesca chimed in, smiling as she spoke. โ€œYou should see how they act around her. Such perfect gentlemen. You wouldnโ€™t believe theyโ€™re the same brats.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re your elder brothers, Siesca,โ€ Daemonikai said, though he was clearly holding back laughter.

โ€œTheyโ€™re not here,โ€ she replied primly. โ€œBesides, if they try anything, Iโ€™ll report them to Scar.โ€

Daemonikai grinned. Yes, his firstborn was notoriously protective of his sisters, and they all knew it.

โ€œAlright, thatโ€™s enough chaos for one night,โ€ he declared. โ€œIโ€™m retiring early.โ€

โ€œBut Papa!โ€ Gaelziezora piped up. His youngest, at only twenty, gave him those big green eyes that could soften stone. โ€œWhat about what we discussed? You promised to help me with it yesterday!โ€

โ€œI promised you tomorrow,โ€ he said with a teasing wag of his finger. โ€œAnd tomorrow it is.โ€

โ€œOkay, Papa. Love you.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s heart melted. โ€œI love you too, dearest.โ€

โ€œLet me guess,โ€ Heraxiola gave him a narrowed stare. โ€œYouโ€™re retiring with Mother, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œOf course I am,โ€ Daemonikai said without shame. He moved toward Emeriel as she rose, wrapping a possessive arm around her waist. โ€œSee you all in the morning.โ€

โ€œWait,โ€ Emeriel said, cheeks faintly colored but her smile radiant. She slipped from his grasp and walked around the table, kissing each of their children left on the cheek, one by one. It had become a nightly ritualโ€”and Daemonikai loved watching her do it.

And what he loved even more?

That no matter how bratty, chaotic, or rebellious their children could be on any given day, they never joked with her feelings, disrespected her, or failed to return her affection. All of them loved her deeply, fiercely.

And for Daemonikai, that was everything.

โ€ฆ.

Later that night, after their slow, unhurried lovemaking, Daemonikai lay with Emeriel tucked into the crook of his arm, fingers brushing along her back, nose buried in her hair, breathing in her calming scent.

โ€œDid you ever look into theโ€ฆ um, the conceive control herbs?โ€ she asked, voice drowsy but curious.

โ€œOf course I did,โ€ he palmed her breast lazily, content just to feel her softness. โ€œTold you I would. The old healerโ€™s working on it.โ€

Emeriel turned her head to face him, her smile sheepish. โ€œI hope you donโ€™t mind. I mean, I never want to forceโ€”โ€

โ€œShhh. Itโ€™s okay, my radiant star. Itโ€™s time.โ€ He chuckled softly. โ€œThe old healer was right; weโ€™ll end up creating an army if we donโ€™t start looking for control methods.โ€

She blushed. โ€œI thought so too.โ€

โ€œThe natural way, abstinence, is not an option. I can hardly keep my hands to myself when youโ€™re near,โ€ he added with a growl, voice dipping low. โ€œEvery moment Iโ€™m close to you, I want to reach for you. Itโ€™s safer this wayโ€“to pace how many little stars we bring into the world.โ€

Her laughter was soft and golden.

She kissed him. โ€œI love you so much.โ€

He pulled her tighter into his arms. โ€œAnd I love you more. Thank you for coming into my life as a brave boy... and remaining in it as the strongest female Iโ€™ve ever met.โ€ His voice thickened. โ€œI will love you for all eternity.โ€

THE END

You endured. You felt. You stayed. You read.

You are a survivor of this storyโ€™s avalanche.
