Chapter 382
As the soldiers dragged Zaiper away, Daemonikai turned toward the werewolf king and extended his hand. โThank you, Azrael.โ
The werewolf king clasped it with a firm nod. โAnything for a friend. When I fought those bloodsuckers and you came to my aid, it changed everything. We may be even nowโbut call on me again, and I will come.โ
โYou too, my friend. The lands of Urekai are always open to you.โ
โAs is werewolf soil,โ Azrael replied.
Daemonikai watched him walk away into the shadows, armor gleaming under the strange light of the eclipse moon.
His mind pulled back to a few weeks agoโheโd been working in the study with Emeriel when the letter came. He had initially asked for it to be discarded.
โShe sent three birds, Beloved,โ Emeriel had said softly. โThatโs no ordinary message. Letโs at least see the context before we burn it.โ
So he had opened it. And in reading it, learned everything: the extent of Zaiperโs past sins and the terrifying intricacy of his current plans. It had been enraging, but it had also given him an edge.
All thanks to his radiant star, who had urged him to call in his favor with the werewolves, even when he had resisted with stubborn defiance. Calm and rational, she had made him see the wisdom in it, drawing his eyes to the hope, to the brighter possibilities of their aid on a night like this. And now, he was glad he had listened, glad he had made the call.
โHey, Ancient One,โ Vladyaโs voice came from behind him.
Daemonikai turned, his brow arched at Vladyaโs state. โYou do remember you werenโt supposed to fight tonight?โ
Vladya snorted, blood spattered across his tunic, grin wide. โSays the male who just spent the night hunting.โ
Daemonikai exhaled a faint chuckle.
โI saw our newest prisoner,โ Vladya said. โI must say, this night is turning out to be very pretty.โ
โIt is,โ Daemonikai agreed, folding his hands behind his back as they walked side by side. โHow are things with the bloodsuckers?โ
โThey never reached the inner halls. Our people are safe. Wellโฆโ he glanced skyward, โMostly thanks to the werewolves. They tore through the vamps before half of them knew what hit them. The rest ran.โ
Daemonikai gave him a side-eye. โYouโre awfully chirpy tonight for a Urekai going through the eclipse moon.โ
Vladya laughed. โGood things are happening, my friend. My third ritual passed yesterday. Tonight, we captured Zaiper, and I beat the fangs out of a few bloodsuckers. What more can a male ask for?โ
Hurried footsteps reached Daemonikai before the figure came into viewโa young girl sprinting toward them.
The familiar slave girl bowed, eyes wide. โYour Highnessโฆ Your Majesties,โ she said breathlessly.
Daemonikai stilled as Vladya tensed.
โMy name is Amie,โ she continued quickly, โand Iโve been sent with a message from the healers.โ
โSpeak,โ Vladya ordered.
โThe princesses are in labor,โ Amie burst out. โPrincess Emeriel was the first to break her water, but she said not to worry you, Your Grace, that you had more important things to handle and sheโd be fineโbut Princess Ackeira started panicking, and now her water has broken too, and sheโs crying for Lord Vladya, soโso the healers finally agreed you should both be informed!โ She gasped, panting. โTheyโre both delivering, right now.โ
Tension rippled down Daemonikaiโs back. The moment the word delivering sank in, he and Vladya locked eyes, then bolted into a full-blown run.
Daemonikai prowled one corner of the hallway while Vladya paced the other. From behind the heavy doors came the raw, wrenching sounds of laborโthe cries, the screams, the urging voices of the healers. Each one sliced through Daemonikaiโs composure like knives.
He caught Vladyaโs eye across the room. No words needed; they were both hanging on a thread.
The entire fortress of Ravenshadow held its breath. Whispers ran like wind through the stone hallsโBoth princesses in labor, on the eclipse moon night.
What were the odds? The night that had stolen everything from Daemonikaiโhis family, his sanity, his soulโwould now be the night that gave it all back?
Another scream ripped through the air. โVladya!โ
His friend snarled, already lunging toward the door, fist raised to shatter it for the fifth time.
Daemonikai caught him yet again. โYou canโt.โ
Vladyaโs voice was hoarse, his beast so close to the surface his eyes flickered gold. โTheyโre in pain, Daemonโserious pain. I can feel her through the bond, even with her shields.โ
โThey are,โ Daemonikai said softly. โBut thisโฆ this is their battle, Vladya. The only thing we can do is be here when they come out of itโฆโ
Emeriel screamed, and something in him broke.
He swallowed hard and pressed on, voice trembling, โโฆto hold them, to tell them weโre proud.โ
โPrincess Emeriel, push!โ came the urgent voice of a midwife.
โI canโtโฆโ Emerielโs voice cracked.
โYou must. Youโre almost there!โ
โIโm so tiredโฆโ
โYouโre the one whoโs growling now,โ Vladya said. โSo tell me, are we going in or not?โ
Daemonikai grabbed the handle, Vladya joined him, and together, they shoved open the doorsโripping them off their hinges, handles clattering to the floor.
A healer rushed toward them. โYour Majesties, you cannot-!โ
But they were already inside.
The bedchambers were lit low, awash in firelight. Emeriel and Ackeira lay side by side, legs braced, faces flushed with effort and pain. Sweat ran down their brows, tears pooled in their lashes, and when their gazes found their males, both womenโs expressions cracked open with relief.
Daemonikai moved to Emerielโs side, dropping to his knees. He caught her outstretched hand in both of his.
โDaemonโฆโ she whispered, her voice shaky and wet.
โYes, my dearling.โ He kissed her fingers, then her temple, brushing the damp hair from her face. โIโm here.โ
โIt hurts,โ she cried.
โI know,โ he murmured. โMy brightest star, I know.โ
โIโm so tired.โ
โI know, my Beloved.โ He kissed her again. โBut you are doing beautifully.โ
Aekeiraโs voice came beside them, breathless and teary, โThey didnโt tell me it would hurt this muchโฆโ
โIโm sorry, my dearest,โ Vladya whispered, kissing her forehead, then her nose.
Daemonikai looked into Emerielโs eyes. โRiel,โ he said softly, โI wish I could bear the pain for you.โ
โI donโt want you to,โ she whispered with a faint, exhausted smile.
He smiled back, aching with love. โOf course you donโt. But we must not keep our little one waiting. Heโs eager to meet his strong, beautiful mother.โ
โAnd his legendary father,โ Emeriel added, breath heaving.
He nodded. โAnd his legendary father.โ
โHold my hand through it,โ Aekeira begged.
โAlways,โ Vladya vowed.
โItโs coming, get ready!โ Emerielโs midwife warnedโjust as Aekeiraโs midwife shouted, โPush!โ
