Chapter 379

โ€œFor all eternity,โ€ he said without hesitation.

The Oracle looked back at Emeriel. โ€œYour birth was set in motion a long time ago. It was written in the stars.โ€ She made a dry, crackling sound that left her clutching at her ribs, clearly in pain.

โ€œYou should rest,โ€ Lord Vladya urged softly. โ€œDonโ€™t speak more than you must.โ€

The Oracle looked at him. โ€œThe one who was not writtenโ€ฆ not fated in the starsโ€ฆ but had to happenโ€ฆโ€ Her gaze shiftedโ€”to Ackeira. โ€œCome closer, child.โ€

Ackeira stepped forward slowly, standing beside her sister.

โ€œYou see her, do you not?โ€ the Oracle asked.

Emerielโ€™s brow creased in confusion. โ€œWho?โ€

To her surprise, Ackeira nodded. โ€œThree times. In my dreams. I donโ€™t know what it meansโ€ฆโ€

Lord Vladyaโ€™s brows furrowed. โ€œWho do you see?โ€

โ€œShe sees herself,โ€ the Oracle answered before Ackeira could speak. โ€œA memory no soul should retainโ€ฆ but which now returns.โ€

Vladya moved in front of Ackeira, cupping her face with both hands, locking eyes with her. โ€œWho do you see, Ackeira?โ€

โ€œTiara.โ€

The room went still.

Breathless silence.

โ€œIโ€™ve seen her in my dreams three times now,โ€ Ackeira went on. โ€œAt first, I didnโ€™t understand what I was seeing. When I woke, it was always vague and blurry, so I waved it off. But it kept returning. The same dream. The same words.โ€

Lord Vladyaโ€™s hands dropped, taking a step back as though struck. โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t believe that.โ€

โ€œI see you with her. By the river,โ€ Ackeira whispered. โ€œYou were lying together on the grassโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI. Do. Not. Believe. That,โ€ he repeated, more firmlyโ€”though his voice wavered.

โ€œPromise meโ€ฆ that if our bonding ritual does not work, you will not fall apart,โ€ Ackeira mimicked the soft and melodic voice.

Gasps echoed through the room.

Lord Ottai. Morina. Even the Grand King himself.

Vladya paled, his lips parting in stunned disbelief.

A faint, sad smile brushed Ackeiraโ€™s lips. โ€œAnd you shook your head and said, โ€˜I canโ€™t promise that, Tiara.โ€™โ€

โ€œHoly lands of the bewilderedโ€ฆโ€ Lady Morina breathed.

โ€œAnd before the bonding ritual,โ€ Ackeira continued. โ€œShe said, โ€˜It will destroy me if our bond fails, but what will kill me more is knowing it will annihilate you. I want to become one with you more than anythingโ€ฆ but sometimes I wish we wouldnโ€™t try. Itโ€™s better not to know. Itโ€™sโ€”โ€™โ€

โ€œItโ€™s better not to tryโ€ฆโ€ Lord Vladya finished in a whisper.

Ackeira nodded, blinking rapidly. โ€œI didnโ€™t see much else, but Iโ€™ve had the dream again and again. I should have said this sooner. Iโ€™m sorry, my Beloved.โ€

Emeriel could only stare, stunned. Ackeiraโ€ฆ my sisterโ€ฆ a reincarnation of Vladyaโ€™s bondmate?

โ€œHow is thisโ€ฆโ€ Vladya was struggling to breathe evenly, his eyes jumping from Ackeiraโ€™s face to her abdomen and back again. โ€œHow is this possible?โ€

โ€œYou made it possible,โ€ the Oracle said at last. โ€œWhen you made the exchangeโ€ฆโ€

Vladya turned toward her slowly, eyes wide. โ€œHavโ€™zie โ€˜de Baah?โ€

โ€œHavโ€™zie de Baah,โ€ she repeated. โ€œThe spell worked, Great Lord Vladya. The chosen human female, Pandora, could bear only one blessed child. That was her destiny. But your dark spellโ€”woven from the ruins of a heart so broken men and gods averted their eyesโ€”rewrote that fate. It brought aboutโ€ฆ her.โ€

Soft gasps flared through the room again.

Vladyaโ€™s hand reached out, almost trembling, drawing Ackeira into his arms. He pressed a kiss to her forehead as if anchoring himself in the reality of her presence.

โ€œHoly grailsโ€ฆโ€ His powerful frame was visibly shaken.

โ€œSo perhaps,โ€ The Oracleโ€™s eyes twinkled through her frailty. โ€œThe next time you rail against the gods, you might be a little gentler with your words.โ€

Vladya gave a breathy, stunned laugh. โ€œPerhaps.โ€ Then he turned his full attention to the woman in his arms. โ€œHave I told you how much I love you?โ€

Ackeiraโ€™s eyes brimmed as she gave him a wobbly smile. โ€œThree times.โ€

โ€œNot nearly enough. I love you,โ€ he stated, his voice ringing true. โ€œI love you so much, Ackeira Maranthine Evenstone. Thank youโ€ฆ thank you for finding your way back to me.โ€

Emeriel slipped quietly into Daemonikaiโ€™s embrace, tears in her eyes as she smiled so hard her cheeks ached. Her heart fullโ€”overflowingโ€”with wonder.

A love that defied time.

A soul that found its way home.

โ€œVia zie eisรฏz, hรฉโ€™xozad lah lahโ€ฆโ€

The words came in a soft, ancient, dreadful way, like something pulled from a dream.

Sinaiโ€™s eyes opened to darkness. The smell of scorched ash. The crackle of fire.

The incantation continued.

โ€œPlease donโ€™t,โ€ her voice was barely audible, helpless tears pooling in her eyes. โ€œDonโ€™t do this.โ€

More words. More fire. The runic circle already complete.

She didnโ€™t have much time.

โ€œI have gold,โ€ she said quickly, hoarsely. โ€œA whole sack. Iโ€™ll payโ€ฆ every coin I own.โ€

The chanting paused.

โ€œIโ€™m afraid that wonโ€™t work,โ€ the mage replied without emotion. โ€œI do not replace one sacrifice with another. And I do not make deals with the dead.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not dead yet,โ€ she croaked. โ€œAnd if you do thisโ€ฆ youโ€™ll be complicit in something he orchestrated. Heโ€™s using you, too. You know that, donโ€™t you?โ€

The mageโ€™s head turned slightly, not speaking.

โ€œEven when he was Grand Ruler, Zaiper would always offer blood over gold,โ€ Sinaiโ€™s voice gained strength, fueled by the sheer will to survive. โ€œYou know why? Because gold is the one thing dark magic canโ€™t replicateโ€”not without immense risk. Heโ€™s been stringing you along for centuries, offering favors, debts, secrets. But never coin. Because as long as you lack, he owns you.โ€

She took a shaky breath. โ€œHe knows your secretโ€ฆ that youโ€™re in hiding. That you canโ€™t openly practice. That your dream is to escapeโ€”use your power to shed the markings, the signs, and disappear into another life. To live freely, without fear of your people hunting you down.โ€

The dark mage appearedโ€ฆ thoughtful? Sinai wasnโ€™t sure, due to that damn cloak.

Still, she pressed on. โ€œYet he never gives you what you want because he needs you desperate. He needs you bound. What he did to meโ€”what heโ€™s doing nowโ€”should tell you everything. He sold me out. Threw me away like scrap. Heโ€™ll do the same to you when the day comes that youโ€™re no longer useful.โ€ Her voice shook, but she lifted her chin. โ€œI have a fortune. Gold Iโ€™ve saved for over a thousand years. Itโ€™s everything I haveโ€”my lifeโ€™s work. Iโ€™ll give it to you.โ€

The words tasted like ash, her stomach turning.

โ€œMy entire hoard, in exchange for my life.โ€

It shattered her soul to say it. That gold represented more than currency. It was her ambition. Her power. Her future. Sheโ€™d fought to claim every coinโ€”clawed her way through courts, lands, and shadows for it. Sheโ€™d dreamed of owning the Crystal Waters and building far greater things with those coins.

Now she was bartering it all away, because Zaiper betrayed her.

You will regret this. I swear it on the gods.

She wiped her tears with the back of her hand. โ€œWhat do you say?โ€ she asked at last. โ€œYour freedomโ€ฆ for my life.โ€
