Chapter 290

After them, Lord Ottalโ€™s bondmate arrived, breezing into the room with an elegance that belied her concern. She carried a bundle of fresh roses, their scent filling the room as she arranged them in a vase on the bedside table.

โ€œThese should brighten your day, dear,โ€ she said with a soft smile. โ€œItโ€™s so good to see you recovering.โ€

Emerielโ€™s heart warmed at the gesture. โ€œThank you, my lady,โ€ she replied.

As evening fell, the visitors departed one by one, leaving the room quiet once more. Emeriel lay propped against a mound of pillows, her body sore but her mind finally at ease. Aekeira sat beside her on the bedโ€™s edge, cradling a small bowl of steaming broth.

โ€œI told you, Iโ€™ve had enough,โ€ Emeriel sighed.

โ€œYou have not eaten properly in days,โ€ Aekeira said, dipping the wooden spoon into the chicken broth and bringing it to her lips. โ€œTry to eat some more.โ€

โ€œAekeiraโ€ฆโ€ Emeriel groaned, sinking back into her pillows. โ€œAt this rate, I will be fat.โ€

โ€œYou should. You have lost weight.โ€ Aekeira nudged the spoon closer. โ€œHere, just a little more.โ€

Resigned, Emeriel opened her mouth. Her sister carefully tilted the spoon, letting the warm liquid glide inside. Aekeira continued feeding her until the bowl was empty, then set it aside with a satisfied nod.

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s going on between you and Lord Vladya?โ€ Emeriel asked.

Ackeiraโ€™s hand hovered over the dishes she was gathering. โ€œNothing,โ€ she said tightly.

โ€œAekeiraโ€ฆโ€

She resumed her work, her hands moving jerkily. The dishes clattered as she stacked them.

โ€œHe should have never allowed it to happen,โ€ Aekeira blurted. โ€œHe could have stopped it. He could have prevented all of this, but he didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYou know you cannot blame him for this,โ€ Emeriel said. โ€œI made the decision and made him promise me. Their word is their bond, you know this.โ€

โ€œAs if that wasnโ€™t enough, he had Lord Ottai drug me through the night,โ€ Aekeira spat, angry and hurt. The dishes clattered again as she furiously packed them.

Emeriel exhaled. โ€œHe did it to spare you pain. It was for your own good. If he hadnโ€™t, you would have tried rescuing meโ€ฆ and you could have gotten seriously hurt.โ€

Ackeira pursed her lips, her body rigid as she stood with the stack of dishes. Without speaking, she walked to the door, opened it, and called for a maid. Emeriel waited patiently as she handed over the dishes and spoke quietly to the maid. Finally, the door closed, and Aekeira returned.

โ€œDonโ€™t be so mad at him, Keira,โ€ Emeriel said softly. โ€œYou know you donโ€™t really want to be.โ€

Aekeiraโ€™s jaw tightened. But then, she released a slow breath. โ€œI thinkโ€ฆ I think Iโ€™m more mad at myself than I am at him.โ€

Emeriel tilted her head, studying her sister with concern.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t do anything,โ€ Aekeiraโ€™s voice shook as tears filled her eyes. โ€œI felt so weak. So helpless. Youโ€™re my sister andโ€ฆโ€

Her lips pressed into a thin line as she fought back a sob.

Emeriel patted the empty space beside her. โ€œCome here.โ€

Aekeira hesitated before climbing onto the bed, careful not to lean on Emeriel or disturb her healing bruises. Emeriel ignored the dull ache spreading through her body and shifted to lie on her side, facing her sister.

โ€œKeira, you need to understand that some things are beyond your control,โ€ she said affectionately. โ€œItโ€™s not every situation you can save, and I would never expect that from you.โ€

Aekeira looked at her, tears falling silently.

โ€œI love you so much, and you are the strongest person I know.โ€

A faint, genuine smile touched Aekeiraโ€™s lips, breaking through the sadness, and the visible tension in her shoulders dissolved.

โ€œI love you too,โ€ Aekeira whispered, wiping her cheeks. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not half as strong as you are.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s debatable. How about we both agree that weโ€™re each the strongest person the other has ever known?โ€

Aekeira chuckled softly, nodding. โ€œDeal.โ€

Then, she tentatively rested her head on Emerielโ€™s belly. โ€œIs this okay?โ€

โ€œOh yes.โ€ Emerielโ€™s fingers drifted into Aekeiraโ€™s hair, stroking it gently. My Keira.

For so long, Aekeira had been the most important person in Emerielโ€™s life. Through every trial, she had been her anchor, her protector, her sister. And even now, Aekeiraโ€™s presence was her greatest comfort.

But there was someone else now. Someone just as important. Someone who had been on her mind all day, though she had tried not to ask. And Aekeira, perhaps sensing this, hadn't spoken of him either.

Emeriel wet her lips, gathering her courage. โ€œHow is he?โ€

Aekeiraโ€™s soft, even breathing answered her question.

Then, โ€œYour Grand King?โ€

Emerielโ€™s heart clenched. โ€œMy Grand King.โ€

Aekeira lifted her head slightly. โ€œLord Vladya and Lord Ottai put him in the forbidden chambers afterโ€ฆ what happened,โ€ she said. โ€œHe woke on the third day, without any memory of it. But Lord Vladya filled him in and brought him to see you.โ€

A knot twisted in Emerielโ€™s stomach. โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œHe stayed all day beside you, seated right here.โ€ She patted the bedโ€™s edge. โ€œIโ€™ve never seen him soโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBroken?โ€ Emeriel supplied softly.

โ€œDefeated,โ€ Aekeira whispered. โ€œHe was in a daze the whole day. He didnโ€™t move, didnโ€™t speak. Justโ€ฆ stared at you.โ€

The knot in Emerielโ€™s stomach tightened painfully. Drawing in a shaky breath, Emeriel spoke through her constricting chest. โ€œAnd after?โ€

โ€œAnd afterโ€ฆ nothing.โ€ Aekeiraโ€™s tone was flat. โ€œHe went back to his bedchamber and hasnโ€™t come out since.โ€

Emeriel stilled. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œLord Ottai calls it a self-imposed exile. No one has seen or heard from the Grand King in almost a week, but we know heโ€™s still there. He shut down the royal residence and stopped taking visitors.โ€

Aekeira placed her head back on Emerielโ€™s belly. โ€œNot even Lord Vladya could get in, and apparently, he has tried repeatedly. The Frostfall soldiers guarding the royal wing wonโ€™t budge. They have strict orders not to let anyone in.โ€
