Chapter 280
โWait,โ Emerielโs eyes widened. โCoffin bed?โ
โThereโs so much you do not know about my kind, Emeriel. Our knowledge is vast and deep, as long as our age, as old as time itself.โ
โBut I thought only vampires used coffins,โ she said, embarrassed.
Daemonikaiโs smile widened. โYou may not have noticed, Riel, but we also drink blood.โ
โOhโฆ I almost forgot that for a minute,โ she admitted sheepishly.
โVampires are disgusting. Their coffins are literal, while ours are beds designed to resemble coffins.โ
โAh.โ Emeriel nodded, understanding dawning on her. โSo, how long has the Oracle been asleep?โ
โSeven hundred. She sleeps longer than most.โ A shadow of sadness crossed his face. โIf she were awake, the eclipse moon night may not have ended the way it did. The Oracle doesnโt interfere, but she sees all: the past, present, and futureโฆ she may have given hints.โ
โBut deep sleep is vital for the old,โ he continued with a sigh. โIt keeps them sane, relaxedโฆ whole. The only thing one can control is when they enter the slumber; how long they remain there is beyond their will.โ
โI understand.โ And she did.
โI miss her, you know,โ Daemonikai confessed, his gaze drifting towards the embers in the hearth. โSheโs like a mother figure to meโฆ to many of us. We are all her children.โ
Emeriel was captivated. โI hope one day I get to meet her. She sounds like a force to be reckoned with.โ
โShe is,โ Daemonikai agreed. โThe only force the entire Urai respects more than the grand throne.โ
A thought crossed Emerielโs mind. โHave you ever considered deep sleep?โ
Daemonikai shook his head. โIโve never had a reason to. I had a fulfilling life before that dreadful night. Afterward, I lost myself and only just my sanity.โ
He paused, thinking about it. โI suppose if you werenโt here, if I didnโt have thisโฆ now would be the time I might have started considering it.โ
Emerielโs heart swelled with love. โIโm glad Iโm here,โ she whispered, reaching out to take his hand in hers. โIโm glad you did not go to sleep.โ
His smile softened, the lines of worry on his forehead easing. โMe too, Emeriel,โ he squeezed her hand. โMe too.โ
IN A CAVE, LOST TO TIME AND MEMORY.
GRAND LORD ZAIPER
They always looked as normal as the rest of their kind, but they were not. That was the thing about dark magesโtheir appearance was utterly deceiving.
โRepeat your request, ruler,โ the dark mage rasped, his voice echoing in the cavern.
โI want you to sever the consciousness from someoneโs mind,โ Zaiper stated, leaning casually against the rough wall.

โCompletelyโฆโ
The mage turned slightly, a subtle shift in the folds of his black cloak. โWho is this person?โ
โDaemonikaj Vipertheriov Naelzharoth.โ
โAnd your name?โ
โZaiper Thoryk Dragaxlov.โ
โWhat you request is dangerous, forbidden magic,โ the mage said. โDo you understand the price?โ
Zaiper scoffed. โI would not seek out a dark mage if I didnโtโฆโ
โMmm.โ The mage remained in the shadow, his back still turned.
Even after centuries of working with him, Zaiper had never seen his face. The black swirling cloak concealed everything.
โNevertheless,โ the mage continued, โI must explain the consequences. A life must be given in exchangeโฆ one you hold dear.โ
โRazarr, bring the girl.โ
His head guard entered the cave, followed by two others. They dragged a young woman between them, a sack roughly thrown over her head.
She whimpered and pleaded for mercy as they hauled her to the center of the cave, positioning her between the mage and the ruler.
โHere is a life,โ Zaiper told him.
โWho is she to you?โ
โOne of my best whores,โ Zaiper sucked his teeth. โI will have you know I enjoy this girl very much. You are taking something of value, I assure you.โ
The mage turned, his face hidden within his cloak. He extended a hand, a black mirror materializing in his grasp.
He held it before the girlโs face, its surface sparkling before turning red.
The mage withdrew it, tucking it into the folds of his cloak.
โOne of which you hold dear,โ the figure repeated in flat monotone.
โI do not hold people dear, Iโm afraid.โ
โThen we are done here.โ The mage turned towards the cave entrance, his shadowy form beginning to melt into the darkness.
โWhat about the girl? Andโฆโ Zaiper paused, thinking. โIโm calling in that favor you owe me.โ
The dark mage stopped in his tracks. His head turned slowly. โYou wish to collect now? Is this truly worth it?โ
โLetโs seeโฆ The only obstacle between me and my dreams will lose control of his mind again, with no choice but to satisfy his basic instinct. Going berserk, he will kill everyone that gets in his wayโฆ hopefully, Vladya will. Then, he will end up brutalizing his Soulbond and draining her to death.โ Zaiper grinned, malice in his eyes. โI will be hitting so many birds with one stone. Trust me, itโs very worth it.โ

Chapter 280
The more he thought about it, the more excited he became. โIt will look so natural. Everyone knows his mind is fragile; no one will ever suspect dark magic.โ
The mage regarded him in silence for a long moment. โYou saved me when my people were going to burn me alive for practicing dark magic. And for that, I have helped you for centuries.โ
Zaiper gave a firm nod.
โI helped you plant the false memory in the drunk childโs mind, making him believe he gave away the secret of your people to the humans, which led to the attack. I helped you bring down your own kingdom.โ The mage paused, his unseen eyes boring into Zaiper. โAnd now you request mind disintegration for Uraiโs First Ruler?โ
โYes,โ Zaiper hissed, impatient.
โThe girlโs life and my arm should suffice,โ the mage said. โMy arm will be paralyzed for a month if the magic succeeds. But after this, we are even. If you desire any further spells, you must meet the requirements.โ
โDeal!โ Zaiper crowed, practically bouncing on his feet, almost unhinged in his delight.
โAlright,โ the mageโs voice was an ominous echo. โIf the magic succeeds, in a few days, His Majesty the First, the mighty and supreme sovereign ruler of Urai, His Grace, Grand King Daemonikai, will lose his mind.โ
