Chapter 280

โ€œWait,โ€ Emerielโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œCoffin bed?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s so much you do not know about my kind, Emeriel. Our knowledge is vast and deep, as long as our age, as old as time itself.โ€

โ€œBut I thought only vampires used coffins,โ€ she said, embarrassed.

Daemonikaiโ€™s smile widened. โ€œYou may not have noticed, Riel, but we also drink blood.โ€

โ€œOhโ€ฆ I almost forgot that for a minute,โ€ she admitted sheepishly.

โ€œVampires are disgusting. Their coffins are literal, while ours are beds designed to resemble coffins.โ€

โ€œAh.โ€ Emeriel nodded, understanding dawning on her. โ€œSo, how long has the Oracle been asleep?โ€

โ€œSeven hundred. She sleeps longer than most.โ€ A shadow of sadness crossed his face. โ€œIf she were awake, the eclipse moon night may not have ended the way it did. The Oracle doesnโ€™t interfere, but she sees all: the past, present, and futureโ€ฆ she may have given hints.โ€

โ€œBut deep sleep is vital for the old,โ€ he continued with a sigh. โ€œIt keeps them sane, relaxedโ€ฆ whole. The only thing one can control is when they enter the slumber; how long they remain there is beyond their will.โ€

โ€œI understand.โ€ And she did.

โ€œI miss her, you know,โ€ Daemonikai confessed, his gaze drifting towards the embers in the hearth. โ€œSheโ€™s like a mother figure to meโ€ฆ to many of us. We are all her children.โ€

Emeriel was captivated. โ€œI hope one day I get to meet her. She sounds like a force to be reckoned with.โ€

โ€œShe is,โ€ Daemonikai agreed. โ€œThe only force the entire Urai respects more than the grand throne.โ€

A thought crossed Emerielโ€™s mind. โ€œHave you ever considered deep sleep?โ€

Daemonikai shook his head. โ€œIโ€™ve never had a reason to. I had a fulfilling life before that dreadful night. Afterward, I lost myself and only just my sanity.โ€

He paused, thinking about it. โ€œI suppose if you werenโ€™t here, if I didnโ€™t have thisโ€ฆ now would be the time I might have started considering it.โ€

Emerielโ€™s heart swelled with love. โ€œIโ€™m glad Iโ€™m here,โ€ she whispered, reaching out to take his hand in hers. โ€œIโ€™m glad you did not go to sleep.โ€

His smile softened, the lines of worry on his forehead easing. โ€œMe too, Emeriel,โ€ he squeezed her hand. โ€œMe too.โ€

IN A CAVE, LOST TO TIME AND MEMORY.

GRAND LORD ZAIPER

They always looked as normal as the rest of their kind, but they were not. That was the thing about dark magesโ€”their appearance was utterly deceiving.

โ€œRepeat your request, ruler,โ€ the dark mage rasped, his voice echoing in the cavern.

โ€œI want you to sever the consciousness from someoneโ€™s mind,โ€ Zaiper stated, leaning casually against the rough wall.

Chapter 280

โ€œCompletelyโ€ฆโ€

The mage turned slightly, a subtle shift in the folds of his black cloak. โ€œWho is this person?โ€

โ€œDaemonikaj Vipertheriov Naelzharoth.โ€

โ€œAnd your name?โ€

โ€œZaiper Thoryk Dragaxlov.โ€

โ€œWhat you request is dangerous, forbidden magic,โ€ the mage said. โ€œDo you understand the price?โ€

Zaiper scoffed. โ€œI would not seek out a dark mage if I didnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMmm.โ€ The mage remained in the shadow, his back still turned.

Even after centuries of working with him, Zaiper had never seen his face. The black swirling cloak concealed everything.

โ€œNevertheless,โ€ the mage continued, โ€œI must explain the consequences. A life must be given in exchangeโ€ฆ one you hold dear.โ€

โ€œRazarr, bring the girl.โ€

His head guard entered the cave, followed by two others. They dragged a young woman between them, a sack roughly thrown over her head.

She whimpered and pleaded for mercy as they hauled her to the center of the cave, positioning her between the mage and the ruler.

โ€œHere is a life,โ€ Zaiper told him.

โ€œWho is she to you?โ€

โ€œOne of my best whores,โ€ Zaiper sucked his teeth. โ€œI will have you know I enjoy this girl very much. You are taking something of value, I assure you.โ€

The mage turned, his face hidden within his cloak. He extended a hand, a black mirror materializing in his grasp.

He held it before the girlโ€™s face, its surface sparkling before turning red.

The mage withdrew it, tucking it into the folds of his cloak.

โ€œOne of which you hold dear,โ€ the figure repeated in flat monotone.

โ€œI do not hold people dear, Iโ€™m afraid.โ€

โ€œThen we are done here.โ€ The mage turned towards the cave entrance, his shadowy form beginning to melt into the darkness.

โ€œWhat about the girl? Andโ€ฆโ€ Zaiper paused, thinking. โ€œIโ€™m calling in that favor you owe me.โ€

The dark mage stopped in his tracks. His head turned slowly. โ€œYou wish to collect now? Is this truly worth it?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s seeโ€ฆ The only obstacle between me and my dreams will lose control of his mind again, with no choice but to satisfy his basic instinct. Going berserk, he will kill everyone that gets in his wayโ€ฆ hopefully, Vladya will. Then, he will end up brutalizing his Soulbond and draining her to death.โ€ Zaiper grinned, malice in his eyes. โ€œI will be hitting so many birds with one stone. Trust me, itโ€™s very worth it.โ€

The more he thought about it, the more excited he became. โ€œIt will look so natural. Everyone knows his mind is fragile; no one will ever suspect dark magic.โ€

The mage regarded him in silence for a long moment. โ€œYou saved me when my people were going to burn me alive for practicing dark magic. And for that, I have helped you for centuries.โ€

Zaiper gave a firm nod.

โ€œI helped you plant the false memory in the drunk childโ€™s mind, making him believe he gave away the secret of your people to the humans, which led to the attack. I helped you bring down your own kingdom.โ€ The mage paused, his unseen eyes boring into Zaiper. โ€œAnd now you request mind disintegration for Uraiโ€™s First Ruler?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Zaiper hissed, impatient.

โ€œThe girlโ€™s life and my arm should suffice,โ€ the mage said. โ€œMy arm will be paralyzed for a month if the magic succeeds. But after this, we are even. If you desire any further spells, you must meet the requirements.โ€

โ€œDeal!โ€ Zaiper crowed, practically bouncing on his feet, almost unhinged in his delight.

โ€œAlright,โ€ the mageโ€™s voice was an ominous echo. โ€œIf the magic succeeds, in a few days, His Majesty the First, the mighty and supreme sovereign ruler of Urai, His Grace, Grand King Daemonikai, will lose his mind.โ€
