Chapter 260
โBut that wall has long since crumbled,โ Lord Ottai said, gently taking her trembling hand from her face. โItโs gone, Emeriel. It hasnโt been there for a long time. Your feelings for him returned, no matter how hard you tried to fight them. And while you were with him again, those feelings only grew stronger. Youโre hurting now because youโre trying to run from what you already know to be true.โ
โI havenโt even crossed the mountain yet, and I already miss him so much,โ she murmured, tracing the path they had walked. โIt hasnโt even been a full day since I saw him, and all I want is to go to him. To be in his presence for the rest of the day.โ Her voice dropped to a whisper. โHow do I live without him, Lord Ottai?โ
โNo one can answer that question but you, dear child,โ he replied, giving her hand a comforting squeeze.
โI donโt want to live without him. I donโt want to go back to the hell of living without him again.โ A choked, shaky laugh escaped her lips as she wiped at her eyes. โI thought leaving was the answerโthat I wouldnโt survive if he broke my heart again. But now that Iโve thought about itโฆ the truth is, I cannot survive a future without him in it.โ
Lord Ottaiโs gaze softened, and he tilted his head. โHave you ever told him that?โ
โIโm too afraidโฆโ Emeriel looked down at her hand in his, her voice barely above a whisper. โTerrified itโll be thrown back in my face.โ
โSometimes, the best solution is to step beyond that fear. To take a single step of courage. Because what truly hurts is not trying, but giving up,โ Lord Ottai said.
โRiel.โ
Emerielโs head shot up at that deep, unmistakable voice, her breath catching painfully in her chest. Had she heard correctly?
โHeโs behind me, isnโt he?โ she whispered shakily.
โYes, he is.โ
โLord Ottaiโฆโ
โThis time, tell him everything. No running. No holding back. Face him and pour out your heart.โ
Hope unfurled in her chest. Just hearing King Daemonikaiโs voice had lifted some of the crushing weight from her heart. His presence alone made it easier to breathe.
Iโve been fighting a lost cause all this time, havenโt I? she thought.
โRiel, look at me.โ
Her heart stuttered, and she looked up at Lord Ottai.
โIโll leave you two to talk.โ Ottai released her hand, stepping back.
With tear-streaked face and trembling breaths, Emeriel turned to face him. Weak-kneed, her gaze met King Daemonikaiโs. โI c-canโt do it,โ she choked out. โI canโt l-leave.โ
He stood there, looking tense, his expression tight, an underlying pain evident. He didnโt move, didnโt close the distance between them.
So Emeriel took a step. And then another. Closing the space until only the faintest breath separated them.
She tilted her head up to him, tears rolling down unchecked. โI donโt want to leave.โ Letting out a heart-wrenching sob, she shook her head vigorously. โI donโt w-want to lose you. Not again.โ
His hard eyes softened for a fleeting moment before flickering away.
Heโs angry with me, isnโt he? she thought bitterly. Why wouldnโt he be? She had shared the most beautiful, passionate night with him, only to leave him a few hours later. I would be furious, too.
So, Emeriel laid her heart bare. โI l-love you.โ
King Daemonikaiโs eyes snapped back to hers, naked emotions swirling within them. He stared.
โI love you, Daemonikai Vipertheriov Naelzharoth. I love you so much it hurts.โ
Grand King Daemonikai moved suddenly, cursing harshly as he closed the distance between them, pulling her roughly into his arms. The force of his embrace stole her breath away.
โHow could you leave?โ His voice was low and pained. โAfter the night we had, after everythingโฆ how could you leave?โ
Emeriel shook her head frantically. Sobs wracked her body, making it difficult to speak.
โIโm sorry, Iโm so sorry. I donโt know what I was thinking.โ Her words tumbled out incoherently between gasps and cries. โI know I havenโt made things easy for you. I was so lost in my own painโฆ I didnโt see yours. I didnโt give you a chanceโโ
โStop. Donโt say that.โ
โNo, please listen. I truly am sorry.โ She clung to him. โForgive me, Your Grace. Donโt ever let me go. I will be good, I promise. I will do anything you sayโโ
โUkrae, Riel,โ he groaned, his hands gripping her back. โWait a minute.โ
โI w-will be her replacement if thatโs what you want,โ desperation edged into Emerielโs voice. โJust let me s-stay by your side. Pleaseโโ
โEmeriel!โ he snapped in a sharp, commanding tone, one she had never heard before.
It struck through her like a lightning bolt, silencing her instantly.
He released her abruptly, a look of regret flashing across his face. โShit, I just used the Alpha Will on you. Iโm sorry, I never use it that way. Itโs justโโ
Running a hand through his hair, he gripped her shoulders, his fingers digging into her skin as he forced her to meet his gaze. โListen to me, will you? Are you ready to really hear me?โ
โYes,โ she whispered, her chest heaving. Even if she could get hurt, Emeriel needed to hear what he had to say. โTell me everything, please.โ
โFirst of all, I donโt see you as a replacement for Evie. Erase that thought from your mind. You are your own person, Emeriel, with your own unique qualities and abilities. Your own unique spirit and fire. You are two separate beings, and you can never be mistaken for each other. Not in my mind, not to anyone else.โ He punctuated each word firmly, leaving no room for doubt. โWhen I look at you, all I see is Emeriel.โ
She opened her mouth to speak, but he raised a finger to her lips. โShh. Let me finish.โ
Emeriel nodded, her hands clutching his cloak.
