Chapter 258

Grand King Daemonikai

โ€œSomeoneโ€™s feeling quite cheerful this evening,โ€ Vladya remarked, approaching.

Grand King Daemonikai turned, a smile tugging at his lips, one he couldnโ€™t suppress. โ€œI donโ€™t know about you, Vladya, but Iโ€™m having a beautiful day.โ€

Vladya arched a brow, dipping his head in a polite bow. โ€œYour Grace.โ€

โ€œSpare me the bullshit.โ€ Daemonikai waved a dismissive hand, resuming his pace, hands clasped behind his back.

โ€œHe whistles, too,โ€ Vladya noted, his voice teasing.

Daemonikai stopped, the faint melody ceasing. He blinked, surprised. He hadnโ€™t realized heโ€™d been whistling.

โ€œYou know, youโ€™re fortunate Aekeira doesnโ€™t have our hearing,โ€ Vladya said, moving beside him. โ€œShe would have come storming in last night, hearing her sister scream like that all night.โ€

โ€œWhy are you suddenly all over my business, brat?โ€ Daemonikai smirked, glancing at Vladya. โ€œCome to think of it, someone does look even chipper than I am.โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t about meโ€”itโ€™s about you,โ€ Vladya retorted, rolling his eyes. โ€œAnd with all due respect, could you quit changing the subject?โ€

โ€œYour ears should be cut off,โ€ Daemonikai muttered.

Vladya smiledโ€”a genuine, unguarded smile. Daemonikai noticed the subtle changes in his friend since his return. Glimpses of the old Vladya were surfacing. But this sincere smile was remarkable.

โ€œYou know, I think this is the first time Iโ€™ve seen you soโ€ฆ happy. Itโ€™s been a long time,โ€ Vladya said, smiling.

Clearing his throat, Daemonikai resumed walking. โ€œTook the words right out of my mouth.โ€

โ€œAnd you canโ€™t blame my ears for this,โ€ Vladya tsked, grinning. โ€œYou were the one who moved from your well-fortified masterโ€™s chambers to another.โ€

That much was true. The memories of Evie had been too much, too painful. And nowโ€ฆ he didnโ€™t regret it. He liked his present chambers. Perhaps it was time he considered converting them into his main residence, fortifying them accordingly.

โ€œAre you two finally going to give this thing between you a chance?โ€ Vladya asked, his tone losing some of its lightness. โ€œHas she forgiven you?โ€

โ€œNot yet. But I like to think weโ€™re working toward that. Last night wasโ€ฆโ€ Daemonikai exhaled, searching for the right word. โ€œIncredible.โ€

Vladya stopped, facing him, his eyes scanning Daemonikai with a discerning gaze. โ€œAll these changesโ€ฆ they look good on you. The smiles, the easy airโ€ฆ even your aversion to touch seems to be fading. I like this for you, Daemon.โ€

โ€œI like this for me too,โ€ Daemonikai said softly. โ€œI didnโ€™t think it would happen. Who would have thought there would ever be a reason to smile again?โ€

โ€œNot me.โ€ Vladyaโ€™s smile dimmed, leaving only warmth in his eyes.

Daemonikai nodded, his voice turning reflective. โ€œWe were both too damaged. We were each otherโ€™s strength and destruction. We had to part ways to fight our demons.โ€

โ€œWe had to,โ€ Vladya agreed, his tone flat but tender. A moment passed. โ€œI missed the devil out of you.โ€

Daemonikaiโ€™s grin returned. โ€œHuh. And the love-sick puppy is back.โ€

โ€œGive me a damn break,โ€ Vladya groaned, rolling his eyes again.

Daemonikai chuckled.

They walked in companionable silence, following the path to the training grounds. The fresh breeze hit them as they stepped outside, crisp and refreshing, carrying the faint scent of flowers. Paths cleared before them as people bowed, greeting them respectfully.

Daemonikaiโ€™s gaze fell to Vladyaโ€™s paw-like handโ€”a reminder that, one day, he might lose his oldest friend to madness. Donโ€™t even think about it.

Swallowing the lump in his throat, he cleared it forcefully. โ€œSo, are you going to tell me whatโ€™s going on with you? This cheerful mood isโ€ฆ glaringly obvious, in case you werenโ€™t aware.โ€

โ€œI asked Aekeira to bond with me,โ€ Vladya said, a faint smile returning. โ€œWe will perform the bonding rituals.โ€

The words hit Daemonikai with the force of a windstorm. He stopped, stunned, staring at Vladya.

โ€œI know it will be hard,โ€ Vladya continued, looking uncertain. โ€œAlmost undoable, butโ€”โ€

โ€œAlmost undoable is putting it mildly. Impossible is the right word,โ€ Daemonikai blurted.

Vladyaโ€™s shoulders dropped; sadness crossed his eyes.

Guilt filled Daemonikai. โ€œI apologize, V.D. That was uncalled forโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s alright. You arenโ€™t telling me anything I donโ€™t already know.โ€

โ€œI still apologize. I shouldnโ€™t have said it. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ Iโ€™m happy youโ€™ve taken this step. Truly.โ€ Daemonikai reached out, clasping Vladyaโ€™s shoulder. โ€œKnowing how you swore off bonding for so long, itโ€™s a relief to see you trying again. But if it doesnโ€™t workโ€ฆโ€ he shook his head. โ€œI donโ€™t want you to go through that pain again. To watch you go through it all again when itโ€™sโ€ฆ when itโ€™s bound to fail this time, terrifies me immensely.โ€

โ€œI understand,โ€ Vladya averted his eyes. โ€œIt terrifies me, too.โ€

โ€œYou know how the bonding ritual is performed. Your female has to be in heat on the seventh day, the ritual rites recited while you knot her womb. Your chest parallel to hersโ€”soul to soul, body to body, binding you together forever. We are missing two vital elements here.โ€ Daemonikai paused. โ€œYour soul and her heat.โ€

โ€œI know all that,โ€ Naked pain flashed in Vladyaโ€™s features. โ€œOf course I do. Butโ€ฆโ€

Daemonikai stayed silent, watching him.

Vladya inhaled deeply, his jaw tight. โ€œBut I still want to try.โ€

Daemonikai saw it then. Determination beneath the sadness.

โ€œIโ€™ve done this before. Taken every step and met every requirement for the ritual, yet it still failed. Every single one of them, except one.โ€ Vladya met his eyes. โ€œThisโ€”what I have with Aekeiraโ€”itโ€™s different. Itโ€™s not perfectโ€”far from it. Itโ€™s not all roses like my past connections. Itโ€™s stronger, more intense, moreโ€ฆ real.โ€
