Chapter 258
Grand King Daemonikai
โSomeoneโs feeling quite cheerful this evening,โ Vladya remarked, approaching.
Grand King Daemonikai turned, a smile tugging at his lips, one he couldnโt suppress. โI donโt know about you, Vladya, but Iโm having a beautiful day.โ
Vladya arched a brow, dipping his head in a polite bow. โYour Grace.โ
โSpare me the bullshit.โ Daemonikai waved a dismissive hand, resuming his pace, hands clasped behind his back.
โHe whistles, too,โ Vladya noted, his voice teasing.
Daemonikai stopped, the faint melody ceasing. He blinked, surprised. He hadnโt realized heโd been whistling.
โYou know, youโre fortunate Aekeira doesnโt have our hearing,โ Vladya said, moving beside him. โShe would have come storming in last night, hearing her sister scream like that all night.โ
โWhy are you suddenly all over my business, brat?โ Daemonikai smirked, glancing at Vladya. โCome to think of it, someone does look even chipper than I am.โ
โThis isnโt about meโitโs about you,โ Vladya retorted, rolling his eyes. โAnd with all due respect, could you quit changing the subject?โ
โYour ears should be cut off,โ Daemonikai muttered.
Vladya smiledโa genuine, unguarded smile. Daemonikai noticed the subtle changes in his friend since his return. Glimpses of the old Vladya were surfacing. But this sincere smile was remarkable.
โYou know, I think this is the first time Iโve seen you soโฆ happy. Itโs been a long time,โ Vladya said, smiling.
Clearing his throat, Daemonikai resumed walking. โTook the words right out of my mouth.โ
โAnd you canโt blame my ears for this,โ Vladya tsked, grinning. โYou were the one who moved from your well-fortified masterโs chambers to another.โ
That much was true. The memories of Evie had been too much, too painful. And nowโฆ he didnโt regret it. He liked his present chambers. Perhaps it was time he considered converting them into his main residence, fortifying them accordingly.
โAre you two finally going to give this thing between you a chance?โ Vladya asked, his tone losing some of its lightness. โHas she forgiven you?โ
โNot yet. But I like to think weโre working toward that. Last night wasโฆโ Daemonikai exhaled, searching for the right word. โIncredible.โ
Vladya stopped, facing him, his eyes scanning Daemonikai with a discerning gaze. โAll these changesโฆ they look good on you. The smiles, the easy airโฆ even your aversion to touch seems to be fading. I like this for you, Daemon.โ
โI like this for me too,โ Daemonikai said softly. โI didnโt think it would happen. Who would have thought there would ever be a reason to smile again?โ
โNot me.โ Vladyaโs smile dimmed, leaving only warmth in his eyes.
Daemonikai nodded, his voice turning reflective. โWe were both too damaged. We were each otherโs strength and destruction. We had to part ways to fight our demons.โ
โWe had to,โ Vladya agreed, his tone flat but tender. A moment passed. โI missed the devil out of you.โ
Daemonikaiโs grin returned. โHuh. And the love-sick puppy is back.โ
โGive me a damn break,โ Vladya groaned, rolling his eyes again.
Daemonikai chuckled.
They walked in companionable silence, following the path to the training grounds. The fresh breeze hit them as they stepped outside, crisp and refreshing, carrying the faint scent of flowers. Paths cleared before them as people bowed, greeting them respectfully.
Daemonikaiโs gaze fell to Vladyaโs paw-like handโa reminder that, one day, he might lose his oldest friend to madness. Donโt even think about it.
Swallowing the lump in his throat, he cleared it forcefully. โSo, are you going to tell me whatโs going on with you? This cheerful mood isโฆ glaringly obvious, in case you werenโt aware.โ
โI asked Aekeira to bond with me,โ Vladya said, a faint smile returning. โWe will perform the bonding rituals.โ
The words hit Daemonikai with the force of a windstorm. He stopped, stunned, staring at Vladya.
โI know it will be hard,โ Vladya continued, looking uncertain. โAlmost undoable, butโโ
โAlmost undoable is putting it mildly. Impossible is the right word,โ Daemonikai blurted.
Vladyaโs shoulders dropped; sadness crossed his eyes.
Guilt filled Daemonikai. โI apologize, V.D. That was uncalled forโโ
โItโs alright. You arenโt telling me anything I donโt already know.โ
โI still apologize. I shouldnโt have said it. Itโs justโฆ Iโm happy youโve taken this step. Truly.โ Daemonikai reached out, clasping Vladyaโs shoulder. โKnowing how you swore off bonding for so long, itโs a relief to see you trying again. But if it doesnโt workโฆโ he shook his head. โI donโt want you to go through that pain again. To watch you go through it all again when itโsโฆ when itโs bound to fail this time, terrifies me immensely.โ
โI understand,โ Vladya averted his eyes. โIt terrifies me, too.โ
โYou know how the bonding ritual is performed. Your female has to be in heat on the seventh day, the ritual rites recited while you knot her womb. Your chest parallel to hersโsoul to soul, body to body, binding you together forever. We are missing two vital elements here.โ Daemonikai paused. โYour soul and her heat.โ
โI know all that,โ Naked pain flashed in Vladyaโs features. โOf course I do. Butโฆโ
Daemonikai stayed silent, watching him.
Vladya inhaled deeply, his jaw tight. โBut I still want to try.โ
Daemonikai saw it then. Determination beneath the sadness.
โIโve done this before. Taken every step and met every requirement for the ritual, yet it still failed. Every single one of them, except one.โ Vladya met his eyes. โThisโwhat I have with Aekeiraโitโs different. Itโs not perfectโfar from it. Itโs not all roses like my past connections. Itโs stronger, more intense, moreโฆ real.โ
