Chapter 220
GRAND LORD ZAIPER
โI donโt believe I heard that correctly. Emeriel did what?โ Zaiper shouted.
โFrom what Iโve gathered, she disarmed and killed the assassin,โ Razarr confirmed, his voice steady despite his lordโs outburst.
The second ruler stopped pacing and glared at his head soldier. Razarr met his gaze briefly before bowing in deference. The tension in the air was palpable, but a soft chuckle broke through. Zaiper whirled around. โWhat in the hell is so damn amusing, Sinai?โ
The mistress tilted her head. โOh, forgive me, Lord Zaiper. Itโs justโฆ well, that tiny human girl seems to have thrown quite the wrench in your plans,โ she purred, stifling a giggle.
โI canโt help but wonder how lightly she must have touched the assassinโs neck to turn his lights offโฆ forever,โ Sinai echoed, snickering.
Zaiperโs nostrils flared. โYouโre enjoying this, arenโt you?โ
โIt is rather amusing, I wonโt deny it,โ she drawled, flashing teeth. โBut donโt get me wrong, itโs also a problem. I heard theyโve already launched a full investigation. What if the trail leads back to you?โ
โNot possible. I was careful,โ Zaiper growled. โThe only one who might know anything is his wife, and she wouldnโt dare speak against me. Sheโs not that foolish.โ
Sinai arched a brow. โWell, I wouldnโt be so sure about that. When a mother hen is desperate to protect her young, logic and fear go out the window. Iโve heard the soldiers even rounded up their families, including the younglings, for questioning. Desperation does funny things to people.โ
โHmm,โ Zaiper pondered, hands clasped behind his back. โThen she must be dealt with. Razarr, make arrangements. Poison her next meal. Ensure itโs untraceable.โ
Razarr bowed and left the room.
โI still canโt believe that little breeze of a girl managed to defeat my assassin,โ Zaiperโs lips pressed into a thin line. โPure luck, no doubt, but lately, it seems she has too much of that on her side. I donโt like it.โ
โI told you before, everything is different with that girl since her return,โ Sinai said. โItโs not just her status thatโs changed. Her strength, her poise, even the way our people look at her nowโฆ and especially since sheโs been spending all her time tending to my Daemon.โ
โThatโs where it ends,โ Zaiper asserted confidently. โNo matter how civilized our people become, they will never accept her mating Daemonikai. Neither would Daemonikai himself. I donโt understand why you are so concerned; sheโs nothing but a minor nuisance.โ
โAnd that minor nuisance just stirred up an investigation that could lead directly to you, Lord Zaiper,โ Sinaiโs grin widened, all teeth. โTake my advice: do not underestimate her.โ
โI will waste no time worrying about a mere human girl.โ
The mistress clucked her tongue. โAnd make no further attempts on the grand kingโs life. Let this situation blow over. If youโre lucky, he wonโt recover, and his dying soul will finish him off for you.โ
โTrue,โ Zaiper conceded, then cast a sidelong glance at her. โYou really are a mean little thing, arenโt you? I would have sworn you cared for that male.โ
The mistress had the decency to look guilty. She cleared her throat. โI do care for him.โ
Zaiper rolled his eyes. โOf course you do.โ
She shrugged. โSo, whatโs your next move, my lord?โ
โWhat do you suggest, then?โ he asked, crossing his arms.
โItโs time you secure an heir.โ
Zaiper was sure the woman was joking. He looked at her as if sheโd grown a new pair of arms. โExcuse me?โ
โThe grand throne has always remained stable because Myka was the heir. But with him and Alvin gone, the throne has only Daemonikai left.โ A smile touched her lips. โHis family is gone; his bloodline is empty once again.โ
Zaiperโs brows furrowed as he listened intently.
โYou need an heir, My Lord. If Daemonikai dies and you assume the throne, an heir solidifies your claim. It fortifies your hold as the undisputed owner of the throne,โ Sinai drawled, blowing air at her manicured fingers. โAn heir will secure the future of Dragaxlov as the Nilโnhile, and the grand throne will remain within your lineage.โ
Zaiper was struck by the brilliance of her suggestion. Why hadnโt he considered this before? Anger vanishing, a wicked grin spread across his face. He strode to Sinai, cupped her face, and planted a filthy, possessive kiss on her lips. Sinai chuckled through it, kissing him back.
โThat,โ he gave her another noisy kiss, โis a brilliant idea.โ
โI know,โ Sinai said, smug. โBut donโt get too ahead of yourself, my lord. Conceiving the idea is the easy part. The execution is where the challenge lies.โ
โI know our people do not birth easily, but I must father an heir. I must.โ Zaiper stepped back, filled with resolve.
The mistress cackled. โLook at that determination.โ
โIโll have my men discreetly kidnap every girl that goes into heat in this kingdom for me, bonded and unbonded, and breed them all, if thatโs what it takes. I will be the next and only ruler with a child in this fortress,โ Grand Lord Zaiper vowed.
EMERIEL
The frostfever struck at midnight. Exhaustion had finally claimed Emeriel, and she had dozed off into a restless sleep in the armchair when a jolt snapped her awake. Suddenly on high alert, she followed her instinct, rising and moving toward the bed. King Daemonikaiโs color had changed to an even more deathly paleโas white as freshly fallen snow.
โMy king?โ She rushed to his side, grasping his arm, only to recoil the instant her skin made contact with his. Unnaturally cold.
โItโs the frostfever!โ Emeriel screamed.
The door banged open as the guards stormed in, alarmed. โPrincess, whatโs happening?โ
โGet Lord Ottai! Fetch Madam Livia!โ she shouted. โNow!โ
Hands hovering over him, Emeriel was unsure where to touch. As she tried to find some part of him that was warm, the cold seeped into her fingertips, numbing her. Everywhere was icy, colder than she had imagined possible.
