Chapter 211
Emerielโs breathing quickened in the silent room as her eyes devoured every detail of him. Control yourself, Emeriel, she thought. There was no bond to blame now; this was all her. Have some restraint. Easier said than done.
She was grateful to be alone with him. No one could see how hard she struggled, how difficult it was to be in the same room again. The effort it took not to rush across the room and collapse on him, just to feel his body against hers one more time, was immense. The memories were the hardestโthose stolen nights at the cottage, making love again and again. The fog of time had blurred them, and she had survived by blocking them out.
But now, here in this room, the years vanished, and it felt like yesterday. The once-hazy memories were suddenly vivid, flashing with painful clarity. Emerielโs whole body shook. She stumbled back, closing the door behind her and leaning against it, gasping for breath. Her knees weak, her heart felt too fragile.
It was easier to fight for control when he wasnโt in sight. You are stronger than this, Emeriel. Get a hold of yourself, she reminded herself. It took a while, but finally, she felt calmer. Composed, she re-entered the room and sat beside his bed, waiting until the constriction in her chest loosened and breathing became less of a struggle.
โMy king,โ Emeriel whispered. โHello, my king.โ Taking his hand, she gave it a light squeeze. His feverish skin burned against her palm. โHow have you been? Where are you? If you can hear me, come back. Your people need you.โ
Once she started speaking, it became easier. The tight coil in her chest began to unwind. โVery soon, the eclipse moon night will be here again. They are terrified to face it alone. There is a famine, and the younglings are starving. They looked at meโme, a humanโwith hunger in their eyes, instead of disdain. Can you imagine that?โ
Clinging to his hand, the heat seeped into her skinโtoo hot. She rose, fetching a basin of chilled water and a washcloth. Returning, she dipped the cloth in the water and wiped his face.
โYou are not leaving them in good hands, my king. Lord Zaiperis is eager to rule, but he does not care about the people. Not like you do. They need you. They always need you.โ
Her hand moved from his brow to his neck. His body radiated a heat that seemed to intensify with each passing second. Peeling back the bedding to wash his body, Emeriel gasped. His left arm was covered in dark lines, like cracks filled with blackened blood, trailing upwards and disappearing beneath his sleeping clothes.
With unsteady hands, Emeriel lifted his garment, following the grim path to his chest. The thickest, blackest lines pulsed from his chest. His soul was truly dying.
โOh, my beloved,โ Emeriel whispered, shakily, staring at the mark of his slow death. Her fingers traced the darkened veins; her forehead dropped to his chest. โHow could you let grief get you to this extent? You cannot leave like this.โ
IN THE SPIRIT REALM
โOur children wonโt talk to me.โ Evie squeezed Daemonikaiโs hand, offering comfort.
They were walking hand in hand along the beach, the soft rhythm of the ocean waves lapping at the shore. โMyka too?โ
โYes,โ Daemonikai sighed. โI found him earlier, but he wouldnโt say a word. Justโฆ vanished. Itโs disheartening.โ
โI know. We may not remember the moment of our deathsโno dead person doesโbut we do have some knowledge about the circumstances. Myka feels guilty for failing to protect me. And Alvin, for bringing this upon our people. For failing you,โ Evie said sadly. โI donโt think he will ever forgive himself.โ
โI wish I could tell them I forgive them,โ Daemonikai said bitterly. โI wish I could make them see that none of this is their fault. Itโs me who should carry that burden, not them.โ
Every time he got close to either of them, their eyes widened, and they disappeared like wisps of smoke. Hours later, they would reappear, and the search would begin anew.
โI wish I could at least talk to them,โ he muttered. โBut they wonโt let me. I have so much to say.โ
โI know,โ Evie rubbed his arm soothingly. โI know, my love.โ
They walked in silence for a while. The only sounds were the cries of gulls and the ceaseless roar of the ocean. โOh, my beloved.โ
They both stopped, their heads snapping up. Daemonikaiโs brows furrowed as he scanned their surroundings. โDid you hear that?โ
โI did,โ Evie was staring at him with soft eyes. โDid you?โ He nodded slowly. โButโฆ you didnโt call me.โ
โNo. She did. The female who is the real reason you are here.โ Daemonikai frowned. โYouโre confusing me again. Iโm here because of you.โ
โNo, my love. You are lost to the realm of the living because the one thing that should anchor you thereโyour soulโis dying. And so, your spirit wanders, into the other side. Drawn to this place, the Dead Oceans.โ
Daemonikaiโs gaze swept across the vast expanse of water and sky. โSo thatโs where we are.โ
โYes. Every soul on the verge of passing experiences this. Their spirit wanders into the other side, seeking joy and peace, finding it in the places they yearn for most. Your departed loved ones can sense your presence. They choose whether to come and keep you company.โ
โHuh. Thatโs something they never taught us in those โDead and the Livingโ study sessions,โ Daemonikai smiled. โSo you are keeping me company?โ
โYes, I am. Our sons, too,โ Evie returned his smile and continued walking, pulling him gently along. โBut whenever you seek them out, they retreat.โ
Daemonikaiโs smile faded. โBut why?โ โCome back, beloved.โ
That voice again. It went through his entire being, spreading like the finest wine. โThat wasnโt you.โ Her head moved from side to side. โYou know who.โ
โItโs not possible,โ His jaw tight, he looked away. โShe is far, far away.โ
โI donโt think so. For her voice to pierce the veil between worlds and reach you here, she must be in Urai, close to your physical body,โ Evie countered, her lips curving into a subtle smile. โSheโs the first to find you, even here.โ
