Chapter 201: Princess Aekeira

When Aekeira entered the grand hall and didn't see Lord Vladya, a sharp pang of disappointmentโ€”quickly replaced by reliefโ€”struck her. At least, she didn't need to face him yet. She quickly composed herself, walking further into the room.

Yaz, and the grand king's head soldierโ€”she couldn't recall his nameโ€”straightened at her arrival, stiff and formal. Lord Ottai, who had been gazing out the window, turned to greet her. Those familiar, beautifully crafted black robes filled her with nostalgia; she barely managed to maintain her composure, remembering them on a certain someone.

โ€œPrincess Aekeira,โ€ Lord Ottai inclined his head with an unfamiliar respect.

It was unsettling, yet strangely comforting, to see three of them bow.

โ€œGrand Lord Ottai,โ€ she curtsied. โ€œTo what do I owe this visit?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a matter of great importance. Is your sister on her way?โ€

โ€œShe will not be joining us.โ€

Lord Ottaiโ€™s face fell, though he didn't seem surprised. โ€œThank you for seeing us. I know this must have been difficult for you.โ€

Aekeira could no longer suppress the question that had haunted her for years. โ€œHow isโ€ฆ is he alright?โ€ She had to ask, she had to know.

โ€œNo,โ€ the grand lord shook his head. โ€œHe is not.โ€

Her breath hitched, and she stumbled back. Blinking furiously to fight back tears, Aekeira choked out, โ€œIs heโ€ฆ feral?โ€

The ensuing silence was unbearable. The look of misery exchanged between the two head soldiers shattered Aekeiraโ€™s composure. Her hand flew to her mouth, stifling a sob. Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision. โ€œOh my heavensโ€ฆโ€ The words were a ragged cry from the depths of her soul.

โ€œMay I, Your Majesty?โ€ Yaz asked.

โ€œGo ahead, Yaz.โ€

Yaz stepped forward cautiously. โ€œMy master is not feral yet. Not completely.โ€

โ€œWhat does โ€˜not completelyโ€™ mean?โ€ Aekeira snapped desperately. โ€œHe is either feral or heโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œIt means heโ€™s turning, Your Highness. His hand is that of the beastโ€™s. Thereโ€™s no turning back,โ€ Yaz explained carefully. โ€œI staked out his cave for days, and managed to catch a glimpse of him when he came out for food. Iโ€™m not sure if itโ€™s just his hand or if there are otherโ€ฆ changes.โ€

Aekeiraโ€™s legs wobbled with staggering relief.

โ€œUsually, the change occurs all at once,โ€ Yaz continued. โ€œOne takes their beast form and cannot revert. But there are rare cases where the transformation is gradual, losing body parts until the change is complete.โ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆ he is stillโ€ฆ male?โ€ Aekeira couldnโ€™t hide the hope in her voice.

โ€œNot exactly,โ€ Lord Ottai answered.

Aekeira stared at him, her heart sinking.

โ€œWhen one reaches the turning point, there is nothing male left. His mind will be completely gone; he wouldnโ€™t recognize anyone or anything.โ€ The grand lord paused. โ€œVladya entered that cave one morning and hasnโ€™t emerged in half a year.โ€

Aekeira deflated. Cold sweat broke out on her skin.

Half a year? This is bad. Very bad.

โ€œAnd the grand king?โ€ she managed to ask.

โ€œMay I, Your Highness?โ€ the other head soldier, Wegai, spoke.

โ€œGo ahead, Wegai.โ€

Wegai stepped forward. โ€œMy masterโ€™s soul is dying.โ€

Aekeira blinked. โ€œCome again.โ€

โ€œOver the years after the eclipse moon night, many who lost their bondmates were so aggrieved they either turned feralโ€ฆor their soul began to die,โ€ Wegai said gravely. โ€œA bond feeds the soul, Your Highness. We had no idea how precarious his condition was until Princess Emeriel was removed from his life.โ€

โ€œYou mean Emโ€™s love sustained his soul, and when she was taken away, it began to wither?โ€

โ€œHis love, young princess,โ€ Lord Ottai gently corrected.

Aekeira flinched. That longing, fierce as a storm at sea, squeezed her heart, and she cried out in anguish.

โ€œAre you alright, young princess?โ€ Lord Ottaiโ€™s concern was evident as he approached her.

โ€œIโ€™m fine, please donโ€™t call me that,โ€ she choked out, one hand pressed against her aching heart, the other raised in a plea for distance. โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Lord Ottai was confused. โ€œThe young princess?โ€

Memories flooded herโ€”all the times her grand lord had called her that.

โ€œNo one has the right to be this beautiful, young princess.โ€

โ€œKiss me, young princess.โ€

Too vivid, too painful. I miss him so much, it feels like a part of me was ripped away and given to him.

โ€œYes, please!โ€ she panted, squeezing her eyes shut. โ€œP-please.โ€

โ€œAlright. I apologize, Princess Aekeira.โ€

Desperate to distract herself from the aching void in her heart, Aekeira forced herself to focus on the conversation.

โ€œYour theory doesnโ€™t make sense, Lord Ottai,โ€ she said, her voice strained. โ€œThe grand king didnโ€™t love my sister. We all know that. He was incapable of it.โ€

โ€œHe cared for her,โ€ Lord Ottai stated. โ€œHe might not have been capable of loving, but he cared for her. When everything else dear to him was taken, she was the only thing he came close to caring about, and that sustained him.โ€

He paused, his gaze heavy with sorrow. โ€œBut when she was removed, the gaping wound that never healed took over. Like Vladya with his feral madness, the grand king hid this from us. But unlike Vladya, he actually fought it from the beginning. But now, he can no longer.โ€

Aekeira swallowed, her throat dry. โ€œWhat happens when one can no longer fight it? What happened to the others who lost their souls?โ€

Lord Ottai looked away. โ€œThey died. Roughly a month after the symptoms are complete, they either go feral or kill themselves. Every last one of them.โ€

โ€œBut Lord Vladya doesnโ€™t have a soul.โ€

โ€œHis was different. Vladyaโ€™s soul isnโ€™t dead; it was lost to dark magic. Itโ€™s alive in the spirit realm, unattainable, but alive.โ€

Hope ignited in her eyes. โ€œSo itโ€™s not dead? That meansโ€ฆ thereโ€™s a chance he can get it back?โ€
