Chapter 500
Someone scoffed. Chris crossed his arms. โWhy would you help us become stronger? Youโre just making us a bigger threat.โ
I smiled. โAre there big pack wars I havenโt heard about lately?โ
The question confused the men. โWhat?โ
โAre there major land disputes youโd kill for?โ I asked.
โOf course not.โ
โHas the king stopped mediating disputes between clans?โ My words sounded uncertain.
โYou know heโll still intervene,โ he said, exasperated.
โThen why would our growth scare you? Any dispute will be mediated. Land will be assigned by the King. But honestly, Chris and I are being honest here. Iโm descended from the goddess. I have magic, a wolf, and a Lycan. No one in your pack could stand up to me one-on-one. Pack against pack, ours is bigger and better trained.โ
His jaw clenched. โSee? This is what I meant,โ Chris said, pointing at me. โShe thinks sheโs better than us.โ
I raised my hands. โI never said I was better than you. I wouldnโt have even brought this up, but you pushed it.โ
โSit down, Chris,โ Tim snapped.
Chris turned, growling at Tim. โTheyโre trying to demean us.โ
My dad laughed. โMy father is behind the plot to kill the king. Do you really think I have any room to look down on anyone?โ
The room was silent. I snickered. My father raised an eyebrow. โIโm sorry, Daddy. But itโs a little funny.โ
My dad shook his head, swiveling to face the other alphas. โNow, letโs talk.โ
โWhat?โ Chris sank into his chair.
โWhy are you feeling this way? When have I ever done anything to make you think I was better than you?โ My dad leaned on his desk. โIโve done my best to avoid stepping on your toes.โ
Chris snapped. โThat, right there.โ
My dad looked at me, confused. โWhat?โ
Chris growled. โYouโre always so fucking perfect. The perfect man, the perfect alpha, the perfect friend. Itโs fucking demeaning.โ
My dad stared at him, then started laughing. Everyone froze. They thought heโd lost his mind, and maybe he had. He wiped his face. โI made my mate believe I cheated on her, broke her heart, and let her walk away.โ His words were laced with laughter. โI barely raised my pup. I got holidays and some summers.โ He shook his head. โIโm far from the perfect man. I ruined my pupโs life, my maresโ, because I knew better than anyone else.โ He turned to Chris. โI spent years ruining every training program my mate put in place before she left out of spite. I stunted the growth of every female in my pack because it was the lunaโs duty to watch over them, and I didnโt have a luna. My best friend nearly killed me, and the only reason Iโm still alive is because Amy saw his true colors, not me.โ
Chris shook his head. โYouโre lying.โ
My dad shook his head. โI wish I was. But you can ask anyone to verify.โ
Chris looked around, and Tim nodded. โAinsley ran to Vinceโs pack. You can ask anyone.โ
Chapter 500
Chris looked back at my father and me. We watched him deflate. My dad knocked on the table. โSo, whatโs the real issue?โ
Chris looked back at my father. โYou always seem to have it all together. IโฆI felt like I was letting my pack down. And I heardโฆโ
He trailed off, looking around.
โHeard what?โ I took a step, Thoth following. The movement felt instinctive yet unfamiliar.
โI heard some pack members talking about Gavin. They were saying how great he was.โ He looked down. โThey talked about living in a pack like this, and Iโฆโ
โYou became jealous,โ I finished.
He looked up, his eyes lost, then nodded. โYeah. I was jealous.โ
I walked to him. โYou know transfers need approval. And my dad wouldnโt poach pack members.โ
โI know. Itโs stupid. I know it is. But I didnโt know how to cope. He was taking care of my pack, being a better man than I was, and my pack was looking to leave.โ
โJust because they talked about living in a pack like mine doesnโt mean they wanted to leave. Why canโt your pack be like mine?โ
โHow?โ Chris laughed.
โI can teach you,โ my father offered.
