Chapter 500

Someone scoffed. Chris crossed his arms. โ€œWhy would you help us become stronger? Youโ€™re just making us a bigger threat.โ€

I smiled. โ€œAre there big pack wars I havenโ€™t heard about lately?โ€

The question confused the men. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œAre there major land disputes youโ€™d kill for?โ€ I asked.

โ€œOf course not.โ€

โ€œHas the king stopped mediating disputes between clans?โ€ My words sounded uncertain.

โ€œYou know heโ€™ll still intervene,โ€ he said, exasperated.

โ€œThen why would our growth scare you? Any dispute will be mediated. Land will be assigned by the King. But honestly, Chris and I are being honest here. Iโ€™m descended from the goddess. I have magic, a wolf, and a Lycan. No one in your pack could stand up to me one-on-one. Pack against pack, ours is bigger and better trained.โ€

His jaw clenched. โ€œSee? This is what I meant,โ€ Chris said, pointing at me. โ€œShe thinks sheโ€™s better than us.โ€

I raised my hands. โ€œI never said I was better than you. I wouldnโ€™t have even brought this up, but you pushed it.โ€

โ€œSit down, Chris,โ€ Tim snapped.

Chris turned, growling at Tim. โ€œTheyโ€™re trying to demean us.โ€

My dad laughed. โ€œMy father is behind the plot to kill the king. Do you really think I have any room to look down on anyone?โ€

The room was silent. I snickered. My father raised an eyebrow. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Daddy. But itโ€™s a little funny.โ€

My dad shook his head, swiveling to face the other alphas. โ€œNow, letโ€™s talk.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Chris sank into his chair.

โ€œWhy are you feeling this way? When have I ever done anything to make you think I was better than you?โ€ My dad leaned on his desk. โ€œIโ€™ve done my best to avoid stepping on your toes.โ€

Chris snapped. โ€œThat, right there.โ€

My dad looked at me, confused. โ€œWhat?โ€

Chris growled. โ€œYouโ€™re always so fucking perfect. The perfect man, the perfect alpha, the perfect friend. Itโ€™s fucking demeaning.โ€

My dad stared at him, then started laughing. Everyone froze. They thought heโ€™d lost his mind, and maybe he had. He wiped his face. โ€œI made my mate believe I cheated on her, broke her heart, and let her walk away.โ€ His words were laced with laughter. โ€œI barely raised my pup. I got holidays and some summers.โ€ He shook his head. โ€œIโ€™m far from the perfect man. I ruined my pupโ€™s life, my maresโ€™, because I knew better than anyone else.โ€ He turned to Chris. โ€œI spent years ruining every training program my mate put in place before she left out of spite. I stunted the growth of every female in my pack because it was the lunaโ€™s duty to watch over them, and I didnโ€™t have a luna. My best friend nearly killed me, and the only reason Iโ€™m still alive is because Amy saw his true colors, not me.โ€

Chris shook his head. โ€œYouโ€™re lying.โ€

My dad shook his head. โ€œI wish I was. But you can ask anyone to verify.โ€

Chris looked around, and Tim nodded. โ€œAinsley ran to Vinceโ€™s pack. You can ask anyone.โ€

Chapter 500

Chris looked back at my father and me. We watched him deflate. My dad knocked on the table. โ€œSo, whatโ€™s the real issue?โ€

Chris looked back at my father. โ€œYou always seem to have it all together. Iโ€ฆI felt like I was letting my pack down. And I heardโ€ฆโ€

He trailed off, looking around.

โ€œHeard what?โ€ I took a step, Thoth following. The movement felt instinctive yet unfamiliar.

โ€œI heard some pack members talking about Gavin. They were saying how great he was.โ€ He looked down. โ€œThey talked about living in a pack like this, and Iโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou became jealous,โ€ I finished.

He looked up, his eyes lost, then nodded. โ€œYeah. I was jealous.โ€

I walked to him. โ€œYou know transfers need approval. And my dad wouldnโ€™t poach pack members.โ€

โ€œI know. Itโ€™s stupid. I know it is. But I didnโ€™t know how to cope. He was taking care of my pack, being a better man than I was, and my pack was looking to leave.โ€

โ€œJust because they talked about living in a pack like mine doesnโ€™t mean they wanted to leave. Why canโ€™t your pack be like mine?โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ Chris laughed.

โ€œI can teach you,โ€ my father offered.
