Chapter 375

Everyone froze, but Shelly dropped down and pulled Abby to her. โ€œBabyโ€ฆโ€ But she trailed off, because what do you say to a child who is too observant to be kept in the dark?

โ€œItโ€™s okay, Momma. Iโ€™ve known for a while now.โ€ She reached up and cupped her face. โ€œI just wanted to spend the best year with you and Daddy, so I didnโ€™t tell you I heard you and the doctor talking about me.โ€ Rick dropped down next to them and hugged them both to his chest.

โ€œItโ€™s going to be alright,โ€ he whispered to them, but I could tell it was to himself. He looked up at me, so ready to believe, and I nodded.

โ€œI canโ€™t fix it today.โ€ I held out my hand. โ€œBut I swear I will fix it.โ€

Shelly looked at me. โ€œHow can you be so sure?โ€

โ€œMagic.โ€ I winked, but she shook her head. I crouched. โ€œI canโ€™t tell you, not before you are away from here. You can take a vow, Shelly, but Abby canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t tell anyone. I swear.โ€ She looked at me with slightly wounded eyes.

โ€œOh, sweet pea, I never thought you would tell on us. But sometimes, especially with same-blood wolves, they canโ€™t help it.โ€

โ€œLike when the alpha commands us to tell him?โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€ I smiled.

โ€œBut what about this?โ€ Shelly moved back. โ€œSheโ€™d already heard all of us talk about this.โ€

โ€œWell, it can go two ways.โ€ I looked down at Abby. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m going to allow her to decide.โ€ I smiled as I pulled her out of her parentsโ€™ arms, letting her stand on her own. โ€œThis is a big girlโ€™s decision, so I want you to really think it through, okay?โ€

Abby looked at me and stood a little taller. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œNow, anything we talk about here canโ€™t be told to anyone. Not a teacher, not the alpha, and not our friends.โ€ She nodded. โ€œGood girl. Now, because you are too young, the goddess will not allow you to enter into a vow. So we have two options.โ€

Rick shuffled closer. โ€œWhat are the options?โ€

Shelly slid closer. โ€œWill they hurt her?โ€

I smiled. โ€œI promise they wonโ€™t hurt. But because you are sick and weakโ€ฆโ€ She looked down. I pushed her chin up with my finger. โ€œWe get to use that as a hidden strength.โ€

โ€œHow is that a strength?โ€ She looked at me, confused.

โ€œOption one.โ€ I held up a finger. โ€œI can use magic to erase your memories of this room, but you will have the feeling you loved it here and had fun. It will just seem like you were too tired to remember it fully.โ€ I poked her nose. โ€œOrโ€ฆ I could use magic to seal your lips about the stuff that happens here, almost like a vow, but one that uses magic to seal your lips.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the difference?โ€ Rick looked at Abby. โ€œBetween the vow with the goddess, and you?โ€

โ€œInstead of being able to pick out the small talk and focus on the smaller thingsโ€”like, am I assuming you had to do with Vince today?โ€ I lifted my brow, and he nodded. โ€œShe wonโ€™t be able to talk about it at all.โ€

โ€œHow will that work?โ€

โ€œBecause she is so sick, and Vince is the one that made her that way. He will expect her to be fragile. He will expect her to clam up around an alpha. And if by the smallest chance he questions herโ€ฆ she can just say, โ€˜I went to Amyโ€™s room,โ€™ yawn, and then turn to you or Shelly and ask to go to bed. Or play shy. Or, honestly, just faint.โ€ Abby giggled. โ€œShe will have options, just not the same as you.โ€ I held out my hands. I waved my left hand. โ€œSo, option one?โ€ I waved my right hand. โ€œOr option two?โ€

Abby opened her mouth, but Shelly jumped in. โ€œIsnโ€™t it better if she just forgets?โ€

Rick looked between his wife and Abby. โ€œI know, as a dad, I would want to just have her forget and pretend she just fell asleep. But also as a dad, I want her to make her own choices. And goddess knows, in Abbyโ€™s life, she doesnโ€™t get many choices.โ€ He looked at Shelly. โ€œI want to keep her safe. I do. But there comes a moment when we have to let her choose, Babe. She might not get many choices in her life.โ€ His last words were whispered, his tiny truth eating away at his soul. He has been preparing for Abby to die.

Shelly looked at Abby, who stood there so determined but patient. โ€œI know what I want to choose, but Iโ€™ll listen to you, Momma.โ€ She would still allow the adults to make her decision. โ€œI trust you to know whatโ€™s best.โ€

I turned to Shelly, but her eyes were on her daughter. I watched her fight the urge to decide, to step in and take control, but she closed her eyes and shuddered. โ€œNo, baby. This is your choice to make. I believe in you.โ€

Abbyโ€™s face lit up. It was like she was waiting for this moment, this decision. โ€œI donโ€™t want to forget. I want option two.โ€
