Chapter 529
Rubyโs gaze lingered on Troy with a mix of pity and ridicule. She said, โMr. MacAfee, some things canโt be forced. A manโs body doesnโt lie. Once age catches up with youโand especially if youโve overindulged in wine and womenโitโs no use pretending. When it stops working, it stops working.โ
Troy roared in frustration. โNo! My heart still burns with passion! Iโm still ready for battle!โ
Ruby let out a light laugh. โAh, but your weapon is rusted and brittle. Itโs no longer fit for combat. Tell me, how can a knight without a proper sword hope to ride onto the battlefield?โ
Troy slumped on the bed, looking like the life had been drained out of him. He could not stand itโhe was sitting in front of a feast, yet his body refused to let him enjoy it. No matter how much his pride resisted, his bodyโs limits were absolute.
Pulling his clothes on hastily, Troy muttered, โBaby, give me a few days to recover, and weโll go again. I promise Iโll make you beg for mercy next time.โ
Ruby, exhaling a puff of smoke, replied with indifference, โMr. MacAfee, perhaps you should go home and focus on your health first.โ
Troy grabbed his briefcase and left the hotel, shoulders slumped in defeat.
As he stepped out the door, a familiar voice greeted him with a light chuckle. โWell, Mr. MacAfee, isnโt this a coincidence?โ
Troy froze, looking up to see Lauren with Andrew beside her, both regarding him with amused expressions.
โMโMs. Rhodesโฆ Whatโฆ what are you doing here?โ Troy stammered, his voice trembling.
Laurenโs smile was as cold as ice. โWhat Iโm doing here isnโt important. Whatโs important is that, when I called you earlier, you said you were at a restaurant discussing business with a client, didnโt you?โ
Troyโs palms began to sweat as he secretly cursed his rotten luck, โWhy is it always these two?โ
โWell, Iโฆ Yes, I wasโฆ discussing business. Itโs just thatโฆโ Troy chuckled nervously as he fumbled for words.
Laurenโs smile widened into a sharp smirk. โLet me guessโโbusiness discussionsโ that conveniently ended up in a hotel suite?โ
โTroy, letโs not beat around the bush. Do you think I donโt know what youโre doing here?โ
Troyโs face darkened, and he growled, โMs. Rhodes, even if you do know, so what? Mr. Rhodes already stated he wouldnโt interfere in my personal life. Whether Iโm meeting a client or doing something else, itโs none of your concern.โ
He was already frustrated by Rubyโs dismissive attitude and could not bear to grovel any further. He thought, โSo what if Lauren knows I was here with Ruby? This is my private life, and she has no right to meddle in it!โ
Laurenโs voice turned calm and cutting. โMr. MacAfee, thereโs no need to get so defensive. Who you sleep with and who you cheat with is your businessโhonestly, I couldnโt care less.โ
โBut let me remind you,โ she added, her tone sharp as a blade, โyou hold a critical position at Rhodes Corporation. If you ever confuse personal pleasures with professional responsibilitiesโif you dare sell out the company for whatโs between your legsโyouโll be seeing the inside of a courtroom.โ
Troyโs face flushed with anger as he snapped, โMs. Rhodes, if youโre accusing me of leaking company secrets or betraying corporate interests, then youโd better have evidence to back it up! Otherwise, donโt waste my time with baseless accusations.โ
Lauren smiled sweetly, her eyes gleaming with mockery. โOh, my dear Mr. MacAfee, you seem awfully nervous. Are you feeling guilty about something?โ
Troyโs heart raced, but he forced himself to maintain his composure. โIโve done nothing wrong, Ms. Rhodes. A clean conscience fears no shadow. If you have doubts about me, Iโm more than willing to submit to an investigation by Mr. Rhodes.โ
Lauren waved him off with a smirk. โDonโt try to use Michael to intimidate me. Iโve said all I need to say - take care of yourself.โ
As she turned to Andrew, she asked with a teasing smile, โDr. Lloyd, Iโve heard that people who indulge in promiscuity often end up catchingโฆ diseases. Is that true?โ
Andrew nodded, his tone matter-of-fact. โItโs not guaranteed, but yes, people who are reckless in their relationships are at a much higher risk of contracting diseases.โ
Lauren raised an eyebrow, her smirk widening, as Troyโs face flushed an even deeper shade of red. His fists clenched tightly around his briefcase as he hurried away, muttering curses under his breath.
