Chapter 272
Andrew responded indifferently, โTwenty percent of Stevens Corporationโs shares are supposed to be my reward?โ
โYou seem to have quite an inflated opinion of yourself, Ms. Stevens,โ he added sarcastically.
Douglas quickly interjected, โTake it, Andy. You helped us out, and this is what you deserve.โ
โSir, I donโt need the money,โ Andrew said with a smile. โWhile twenty percent of Stevens Corporation is substantial, it makes no difference to me whether I have it or not.โ
Christina took a deep breath and replied coldly, โIf you donโt want it, thereโs nothing more to say. I gave you an opportunity, Andrew, but you couldnโt seize it.โ She felt uncomfortable, knowing his rejection stemmed from underestimating Stevens Corporation. Little did he know how significantly the company had transformed. To her, he remained shortsighted, lacking true vision.
Among the Stevens family, only Douglas held a different perspective. He realized they had missed a chance to align with a true powerhouse. He had intended to bind Stevens Corporation and Andrew together through the sharesโhe would have readily offered fifty percent instead of twenty. Unfortunately, Andrew had declined. Still unwilling to give up, Douglas abruptly changed the subject, asking, โSo, Andy, are you seeing anyone these days?โ
At this question, Christina froze mid-meal, turning to look at Andrew.
Meeting her gaze, Andrew replied casually, โNo. As you know, Iโm too laid-back for most women to consider dating.โ
โThatโs nonsense,โ Douglas said seriously. โYouโve got both character and capability. Christie also mentioned youโve been promoted to deputy chief at Jayrodale General Hospital.โ
โYes. Someone recognized my talent, and I got a promotion,โ Andrew admitted.
Douglas nodded thoughtfully. โYouโre already a deputy chief at such a young ageโin my opinion, thatโs just as impressive as Christieโs position as CEO.โ
โLet me make a suggestion, Andyโand forgive me for being presumptuous,โ Douglas continued. โWhy donโt you and Christie try to reconnect? Maybe rekindle what you once had?โ
Andrew froze, caught off guard.
Christina protested, โGrandpa, have you had too much to drink? Andrew and I broke up long ago. Some things canโt be fixed once theyโre broken.โ
Irene chimed in disapprovingly, โThatโs right! Christieโs net worth keeps growing. Now that sheโs free from the Weller familyโs interference, sheโs about to become Jayrodaleโs most eligible CEO. You canโt just play matchmaker without considering whether a mere deputy chief is worthy of Christieโs statusโtheyโre worlds apart!โ
Douglas quivered with anger. โFoolish woman, hold your tongue! You look down on Andy for being just a deputy chief? Tell me, who saved the Stevens family from crisis today?โ
Irene fell silent with a cold snort, her disapproval remaining evident.
Douglas turned to Christina, saying, โWhile you may run Stevens Corporation, you control the Stevens family. If you still respect me as your grandfather, youโll follow my wishes!โ
He continued, โMark my wordsโeven if you turn Stevens Corporation into a top 500 company worldwide, it will mean nothing if you let Andrew slip away.โ
Christina argued, โGrandpa, youโre clearly favoring Andrew. Besides, you canโt force matters of the heart.โ
Douglas retorted, โSo, youโre still going to be stubborn as ever?โ
Christina turned away and stated firmly, โWhen I chose to break up with Andrew, I decided never to look back.โ
โMr. Stevens Senior, please donโt pressure her,โ Andrew interjected with a smile. โBesides, I agree that weโre not compatible. With her current achievements, Iโm truly not worthy of her.โ
โAndrew, you donโt need to use subtle jabs to provoke Grandpa,โ Christina responded coldly.
