Listen to this chapter:

Everyone had stopped fighting altogether. Or rather, Andrewโ€™s side had temporarily set aside any thoughts of attacking.

On the other side, only Stanley was left. He said, โ€œAndrew, Iโ€™ve never had any real grudge with you or anyone here! Remember back at the Wright estate, Mr. Lloyd, when you scammed me out of a billion dollars? I didnโ€™t even bat an eye at that loss!

โ€œNow Iโ€™m standing at deathโ€™s door. I donโ€™t want to kill anymore โ€“ I just want to live. So, Iโ€™m hoping we can settle this without bloodshed!โ€

He raised both hands in surrender, his face full of desperate sincerity as he pleaded for peace.

Chantelle frowned. โ€œMr. Oโ€™Higgins, is everything you said about the old royal court really true? We know that the Demon Queen had only one son โ€“ Maximus, the last emperor.โ€

Stanley smiled. โ€œMs. Garcia, youโ€™re an educated woman. Real or not, I think someone like you can judge for herself. After all, weโ€™re standing in the Underworld Kingdom of the Dead โ€“ this place tells its own story.

โ€œAs for Maximus, I know for a fact he was the younger brother of the Little Emperor. He spent his entire life under that old womanโ€™s shadow. When the empire was already collapsing, that was when they gave him the throne.

โ€œTo become emperor at the end of an era? Thatโ€™s no gift โ€“ itโ€™s a curse. Iโ€™ve kept track of his fate, even from abroad. And honestly? He fared better than his brother, my childhood friend, Maximillian Newmont. At least Maximus lived long enough.โ€

Tiana let out a cold laugh. โ€œThe Demon Queen was cruel and controlling. She kept the Fallen Crimson Dynasty on its knees to foreign powers for decades โ€“ what a disgrace to Etharia! But to say she poisoned her own son? Iโ€™m a mother myself, and I donโ€™t buy it.โ€

Stanley slowly shook his head. โ€œYou werenโ€™t there. You didnโ€™t live in that time. You donโ€™t know just how cruel and self-serving that woman truly was. And believe me โ€“ she did things far worse than what Iโ€™ve told you.โ€

Andrewโ€™s voice was low, but firm. โ€œStanley, youโ€™re right. We donโ€™t have some personal blood feud between us, but that doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™ll let you take the Elixir of Immortality. Everything in this place belongs to Holtrien, and you donโ€™t get to touch any of it.โ€

Stanley chuckled faintly. โ€œYouโ€™re no ordinary man. Youโ€™re a real force in Holtrien โ€“ a true powerhouse. I can tell youโ€™ve kept a low profile, but your background must be something remarkable. Thatโ€™s why I said earlier โ€“ I see myself in you.

โ€œTruth be told, I admire you. I spent 100 years planning every step of this journey, and only now have I found this place. But you? You found it with nothing but a few scraps of old maps and a handful of assistants. Itโ€™s incredible โ€“ almost unbelievable!

โ€œIf Iโ€™d known someone like you existed earlier, I wouldโ€™ve done everything in my power to befriend you, to become allies. But hey โ€“ better late than never. So, how about this, Andrew? Let me have the Elixir of Immortality, and you can have everything else in the crypt โ€“ I wonโ€™t touch a thing.

โ€œAnd once we get out, Iโ€™ll use my influence to make sure you become the most powerful, wealthiest man in all of Holtrien.โ€

Andrew started to laugh, slow and measured. โ€œIโ€™ve got to say that your offer isโ€ฆ very tempting. And your story? Itโ€™s a good one. Moving, even. Makes a guy want to feel sorry for you.โ€

Stanley smiled. โ€œSo what do you say? Are we friends now?โ€

Andrewโ€™s grin widened. โ€œI have no interest in becoming your friend. Because if I did? Iโ€™d probably end up just like the one who used to sit on that throne!โ€
