Listen to this chapter:

โ€œMom, somethingโ€™s seriously wrong with Christie,โ€ Leroy said urgently, noticing how her expression had completely collapsed. โ€œItโ€™s like sheโ€™s about to have a breakdownโ€”we should stop arguing and just let her rest!โ€

Irene, pacing in circles and dabbing at her tears, wailed, โ€œHow could this happen to my sweet girl? She was fine just this morning! Christie, how am I supposed to go on if anything happens to you? Iโ€™m still counting on you to take care of me when Iโ€™m old!โ€

Leroy rolled his eyes. โ€œSeriously, Mom? Christieโ€™s losing it, and all you can think about is whoโ€™s going to fund your retirement? Youโ€™ve got to be the most selfish mother on the planetโ€”all you ever think about is your own little world!โ€

Irene snapped, eyes wide. โ€œYou brat! Youโ€™ve got a lot of nerve talking to me like that! Donโ€™t forget that youโ€™ve been bleeding Christie dry, too! Iโ€™m your mother! I raised you, fed you, and gave you everything! Expecting my kids to support me is not aโ€”"

She added, โ€œAnd what about you? Youโ€™re young, able-bodied, and still uselessโ€”Christieโ€™s a woman, and sheโ€™s done more than you ever have! Youโ€™re a disappointment!โ€

Leroyโ€™s face flushed red with shame. Her words stung like a slap, burning his pride. He hated being called weak, hated hearing that he was not a real man.

If anyone else had said that to him, he would have lashed out at them already, fists flying in rage.

โ€œFine! Youโ€™re my mom, so I wonโ€™t fight you on it,โ€ he growled. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m pathetic? That Iโ€™m not a man? That Iโ€™ll never amount to anything? Great. Then Iโ€™ll prove you wrong. Iโ€™ll show you what Iโ€™m really made of!โ€

He grew more agitated by the second, face twisting in fury, then stormed out and slammed the door.

Irene chased after him, yelling, โ€œYou brat! Where do you think youโ€™re going? Donโ€™t you dare cause trouble!โ€

Somehow, Leroy had gotten his hands on a long kitchen knife, which he tucked into his hoodie. His eyes burned with rage.

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m useless, huh? Just wait. Iโ€™ll prove it to you, and to Christie! Iโ€™ve got blood in my veins, and Iโ€™ve got guts to back it up! Christieโ€™s like this because of that bastard Andrew. Iโ€™m going over there right now to make him pay!โ€

Irene gasped. โ€œYou idiot! Donโ€™t do anything stupid! Have you already forgotten what happened last time?โ€

Leroyโ€™s mouth twisted into a wicked grin. โ€œOf course I remember. But itโ€™s like they sayโ€”every dog has its day. Donโ€™t look down on someone just because theyโ€™re struggling! You and Christie always thought I was just wasting time in Blumedale, doing nothing. Truth is, Iโ€™ve already built a little empire here, just behind the scenes.โ€

He added, โ€œDonโ€™t ask too much. Just stay here and take care of Christie. If I canโ€™t get justice from Andrew today, then Iโ€™m no man. Iโ€™m not even worthy of being Christieโ€™s brother!โ€

The way he said itโ€”full of bravado, fists clenched, chest puffedโ€”he almost looked like some tragic hero marching off to battle.

But the moment he was out of Ireneโ€™s line of sight, his entire demeanor flipped.

With a greasy smile, he whispered into his phone, โ€œHey, Sergey! Itโ€™s me, Leroyโ€”yeah, yeah, the guy who paid protection money last time! Listen, I need a favor. Christieโ€™s in troubleโ€”she passed out from stress!

โ€œI was hoping you could roll with me, maybe help me scare the guy who did this to her. Donโ€™t worry, Sergey. If you back me up on this, Iโ€™ll make sure youโ€™re well compensated. You wonโ€™t regret it!โ€

Back in the hotel suite, Irene mumbled to herself, squinting toward the door. โ€œThis dumb kid actually looked pretty serious just now. Could it beโ€ฆ maybe my useless son actually carved out a life in the underworld?

โ€œWho knows? Maybe heโ€™s secretly the kingpin of Blumedaleโ€™s underground scene, running everything from the shadowsโ€ฆโ€
