Chapter 357: Aurora

I sighed, stepping up to Dane. Placing my hand on his on the table, I noticed him subtly shift it away.
โDane?โ I called, and he looked up. โI am seriousโฆ no one can take your place, not in this pack or in my heart.โ
He locked eyes with me, doubt evident in his gaze. Why would he doubt me?
I looked down at the table; he was pushing the invitation card toward me. Trajan had prepared it before our arrival. The ball was happening tonight; Alina would be exposed. Kyle would be there, and everyone would see her true colors.
I sighed, rubbing my temples. โDane, I should have told you beforehandโฆ but Iโฆโ I paused. What should I tell him? Revealing the truth would only add to his pain. I should keep it to myself until after tonight. Then, he would know everything.
โJust a few hours, Daneโฆ I promise to explain everythingโฆ trust me.โ

โI want toโฆ itโs better than hurting myself by mistrusting you, right?โ
I smiled, turning to Trajan, who looked away, as if feigning disinterest. โLetโs go, Trajan. Are you done?โ
โYesโฆ Iโm coming.โ
I walked out; as I crossed the threshold, I saw Dane staring. I looked away and left the room, Trajan following.

I entered my office, adjacent to his. I slumped into the chair, breathing a sigh. โI canโt wait for all this to be over.โ
โI know, right?โ Trajan said, sitting opposite me. โI think Dane is upsetโฆ your secrecy is causing a rift, and you donโt want to tell anyone.โ
I narrowed my gaze. โHow did you know I had a secret?โ
He chuckled. โI know you, Auroraโฆ I know when youโre lying, and youโve been doing a lot of it since yesterday. Do you think Dane wonโt notice?โ
I breathed sharply. โI am doing this for a reason.โ
Trajan nodded. โI knowโฆ youโre wise, Auroraโฆ but is it worth jeopardizing your relationship with Dane?โ
I stared at him silently. He was right; I couldnโt let this damage my relationship. It had to end tonight.
โTrajan, I need to speak with Joclyn.โ

Trajan took a deep breath and stood. He left the office, and I leaned my head on the table. I didnโt feel well; I hadnโt eaten, and I wasnโt hungry.
I raised my head at Joclynโs call from outside. โCome in, Joclyn.โ
She entered and sat. โYou called for me.โ
I leaned in, taking her hand. โJoclyn, howโs your flower hunt with Trajan?โ
โWe havenโt gone yetโฆ but we will next week. Iโve been so busy with the pack.โ
I nodded. โI called to discuss the ballโฆ I want you to handle itโฆ but thereโs something you must doโฆโ
I lowered my voice, telling her about Alina and Kyle, and my plan to expose her lies at the ball.

Joclyn didnโt seem surprised by Alinaโs actions. She was used to Alinaโs mischief.
โI promise to handle it,โ Joclyn said.
โI trust you,โ I said, smiling.
We soon finished drafting the ballโs program, and she left.

Tristan peeked in as I rested my head on the table, contemplating a nap.
โMum,โ Tristanโs cheerful voice brightened the room, and I smiled, inviting him in.
He reached my table, looking around in wonder. โWowโฆ Mum, you finished work early today.โ
I chuckled. โNo, darlingโฆ I didnโt have much to do since your father resumed work, and most of the workload was his.โ
โOh.โ Tristan nodded. โThatโs niceโฆ it means Iโll have more time with you now.โ
I pinched his cheeks. โThereโs a ball tonight. Do you have an outfit?โ
Tristan pondered. โI think I have some nice clothes, but theyโre old.โ
โOld?โ I asked. โYou donโt have any old clothes, Tristanโฆ theyโre only a few months old.โ
โIsnโt that oldโฆ I want new clothes for every party.โ
My shoulders slumped. โNoโฆ Tristan, Iโm sorry, but you have to wear something nice from your wardrobe. Is that clear?โ
โYes, Mum,โ Tristan groaned.
I opened my cupboard, took out a lollipop, and gave it to him. He happily unwrapped it.
โThanks, Mum.โ
The door burst open; Evelyn entered, carrying two long dressesโa black one with stones and a silver one with blue stripes.
โAuroraโฆ why didnโt you tell us about the ball earlier? Now I donโt know what to wear,โ Evelyn said, frowning.
I stood and walked to the window. โYouโre pretty, Evelyn, no matter what you wear, youโll always look sweet.โ
Evelyn rolled her eyes; I winked before turning to the window.
โWhich is better?โ Evelyn asked.
โThe black,โ I replied, opening the curtains.
โHow would you know? Youโre not even looking.โ
โWell, I saw them when you came in, soโฆโ I paused, narrowing my eyes at the people outside.
What was Alina doing talking to Miles? I hoped he wouldnโt tell her I knew about the man with the tattoo.
