Chapter 242
The peace of the moment didnโt last. A sharp knock on the door stressed us again, and Dane sat up at once, frustration knitting between his eyebrows.
โDane, Aurora!โ came Trajanโs urgent voice from the other side. โYou need to see this. Now.โ
My heart was racing while I followed him out the door.
Trajan was there, his face unreadable. โRowanโs called a meeting,โ he said. โHeโs gathering wolves in the clearing, mostly the younger ones.โ
โWhat does he want?โ Dane said shortly.
Trajanโs jaw was clenched. โTo challenge your leadership.โ
I felt the blood drain from my face. โWe need to stop this before it goes too far.โ
Dane nodded, his hand brushing against mine briefly before he turned to Trajan. โGather the elders. If Rowanโs dividing the pack, weโll face him together.โ
Then he, Rowan, stood tall right in the middle with defiant confidence while Alina trailed behind him with her arms crossed, almost smirking.
โWe need new leadership!โ Rowanโs voice boomed as I came into view. โAurora and Dane are blind to the struggles of this pack. They play favorites, rewarding their inner circle while the rest of us are left to fend for ourselves.โ
Murmurs spread through the crowd, their doubts so easy to read on their faces.
I inhaled deeply, stepping out in front to face him squarely. โIs that what you believe, Rowan? That we have failed you?โ
His jaw clenched, and for an instant, I thought he might back down. But then Alina laid a hand on his shoulder, and his resolve hardened.
โItโs not just me. Look around, Aurora. The packโs divided because of your choices.โ
Dane shifted to my side then, his presence steadying me.
โYou see what Iโm sayingโฆ he is getting out of hand, and the pack is going to be divided because of him, if we donโt do something,โ he whispered to me.
I gulped and looked at Rowan. I feel pity for him; he is driving at full speed to his own destruction, and he is so young... My eyes went to Alina, who smirked at me. He is so young and foolish.
I gritted my teeth as I turned to Rowan, โYou are now blind.โ
Rowanโs face darkened. โIโm not blind!โ
โAre you not now?โ I asked calmly. โOr are you letting your own insecurities and Alinaโs whispers drive you to tear this pack apart?โ
Rowan jerked back, but before he could utter a word of protest, Alina surged forward.
โYou canโt hold that against Rowan for having an opinion,โ she said, sugary sweet. โHeโs merely stating what the rest of us have already thought and felt.โ
The crowd rumbled with murmurs, and I turned to Piper, who stood off near the treeline with Warrick. Her eyes darted up, finding mine and brimming with unease.
โWe are stronger together,โ I again turned to the pack. โWe will only weaken our cause by dividing ourselves. This pack has been through too much to break apart now.โ
Rowanโs lips thinned. โWords wonโt fix whatโs broken,โ he said. โWe need action. We need change.โ
The meeting concluded without resolution, the crowd breaking apart in uncomfortable silence. Rowan strode away towards the woods. Alina followed after him.
I caught Piperโs arm as she passed. โKeep an eye on Rowan,โ I
She nodded. โIโll do my best.โ
Later that night, I found Dane in the training arena, in deep focus and moving through a series of drills with sharp precision. Anger seared in his eyes.
โYouโre going to wear yourself out,โ I said, leaning against the wall.
Mid-blow, he froze, dropping his arm to wheel on me. โI will not stand idly by while this happens, Aurora,โ he said. โRowan is tearing this pack apart at the seams, and Alina is growing fat on it.โ
โI know,โ I returned, recognizing the note of frustration.
โHave you made up your mind, Aurora?โ Dane asked. I paused as I walked to the open window and looked out.
โDaneโฆ Iโm at a crossroad hereโฆ I think we need to find a way to stop Alinaโฆ If she stops, Rowan will stop.โ
Dane was quiet. What was he thinking? I was about to turn to him when he placed his hand on the window pane and looked out into the sky with me.
โAlina is too smartโฆ I have a feeling she has a connection with an enemy outside, but we canโt do anything without evidence. She is too careful.โ
โBitter truthโฆ but Rowanโฆโ
โIs a fool,โ Dane cut me off.
โDonโt be so harsh, Dane; the poor boy is just naive. He has a fragile mind, and Alina cunningly wrapped her webs around him.โ
Dane scoffed, โThat doesnโt hide the fact that he is a fast ticking time bombโฆ he would destroy everything, Aurora.โ
I breathed a heavy sigh as I threw my head back. โIโm confused.โ
โWhy?โ Dane asked. โAs a leader, you have to prioritize the safety of the massesโฆ Rowan is like a terroristโฆ and what happens to them? They get neutralized.โ
I gasped as I turned to Dane. I stared at him in shock, and then I rolled my eyes and crossed my hand over my chest.
โYou want him neutralized now?โ
โI didnโt say thatโฆ just follow the law,โ Dane said and rolled his eyes back at me.
โI think I know why Rowan is like thisโฆ Itโs because he is an orphanโฆ he needs someone to show him what true love is, so he would see through Alinaโs fake mask.โ
Daneโs jaw dropped as he stared at me. โI canโt believe you are saying thisโฆ I justโฆโ he paused and turned away.
โDaneโฆโ I called and tried to walk to him.
โJust forget it,โ he said and raised his hands as he stormed out.
behind him, โShit.โ
