Listen to this chapter:

They sat silently at the dining table, eating breakfast.

"Oh yes," Oscar said, retrieving his phone from under a newspaper. "It's yours. I forgot to give it to you last night."

Hannah hadn't taken her phone to the wedding. She'd assumed it was in the hall and planned to retrieve it, but hadn't expected Oscar to have it. She took the phone, noting it was still turned off. Oscar seemed to enjoy turning her phone off.

She began breakfast, preparing to read the news. Oscar read his newspaper, a habit that seemed oddly old-fashioned for him. He noticed her look and said, absentmindedly flipping a page, "Some news is more accurate in print. Online news is mostly sensationalized to attract readers. It's a bad habit."

He was right. Much online news was exaggerated for attention, though this didn't diminish its popularity. Most people, after all, just read the news to pass the time.

As Hannah opened a news website, Susan's name jumped out. It was just after 7 am. Considering Susan's usual laziness, Hannah was surprised she was awake before 2 pm, given how busy she'd been yesterday. She immediately answered the call.

"Hannah!" Susan cried.

Oscar heard this, but showed no surprise, continuing to read his newspaper impassively.

"Calm down," Hannah said.

"I can't! You left me repeatedly! How can I calm down?" Susan's impulsive nature was evident. Someone might misunderstand their situation. "You left a wedding at noon yesterday, married someone else last night, and then left me alone without an explanation!"

Hannah felt awkward. She doubted any couple in Country B would be as impulsive as she and Oscar. It was, she supposed, the most complicated wedding Susan had ever witnessed.

"I'm sorry," Hannah said, lacking words to console her friend. She tried to offer further comfort.

Oscar looked up from his newspaper. Seeing her gently soothe Susan, a smile slowly spread across his face. Hannah saw it, too. He was sitting directly opposite her. She wondered if he had a mental problem, smiling like that so suddenly.

"Anyway," Susan continued, "did you guys have passionate sex last night and fall asleep? Or why's your phone been off? You know how many times I called?"

Hannah was speechless. Glancing at Oscar, who was still reading, she asked, "Why did you ask that?"

"Can't I care about my best friend's sex life?" Susan said airily.

Hannah blushed, evasively replying, "We'll talk later."

"Oscar's there?" Susan immediately noticed.

"Yeah," Hannah confirmed.

"Are you still in bed?"

"No."

"Are you naked?"

"No."

"Did I interrupt something?" Susan's emotional tone suggested she was having trouble hearing.

"I said NO," Hannah stressed.

"Okay, okay," Susan said. "I know you. Even if I haven't experienced it, I've seen enough. I know it's tiring and painful the first time. You need rest."

Hannah wanted to cover her mouth.

"I'm hanging up," Susan said, and ended the call.

Hannah sighed, wondering when Susan would become less reckless, more mature and modest, more wise.

Before she could put down her phone, it rang againโ€”Susan. Hannah knew immediate change was impossible.

"Hey," she answered.

"Read the news! Your marriage is famous, extremely famous! It's good newsโ€”Charles Sawyer, that bastard, is being bombarded with criticism! I saw it this morning while peeing, and I've been delighted ever since! Read it with Oscar, maybe you'll feel like doing it again afterward!"

Hannah wondered if Susan had actually grown up in upper-class society; she certainly lacked any elegance. Susan immediately hung up.

"Did you sleep well?" Oscar asked.

Hannah replied, still reading the news, "Fine." She'd expected trouble sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings, but had fallen asleep quickly.

"I didn't sleep at all," Oscar said flatly.

"Then what did you do?" Hannah glanced at him.

"Thinking about you."

Hannah was speechless. "Your face looks great. You don't look like someone who hasn't slept all night."

"I meantโ€ฆ my body."

Hannah frowned. What was wrong with him? His smile widened. He put down his finished newspaper and breakfast. "Hurry and finish. We're going back to the Wells' house."

Hannah, absorbed in the news, didn't respond. Oscar frowned, got up, and glanced at her phone. He saw the headline: "Charles Sawyer left like a drowned mouse; the handsome beau becomes a joke." He snatched the phone.

"Oscar Wells!" Hannah said, slightly enraged.

"Eat first. You can read it later," he said, returning to his seat with a serious expression. She reminded herself not to argue with a man younger than her. He was, after all, too childish.
