Listen to this chapter:

Esther glared at Hannah with malevolence; she could have killed her. But she swallowed her rage. She couldn't understand why Hannah, once so timid, was now so defiant.

As a child, Hannah had followed her parents home, trembling with fear after visits to Lorie's house. Esther and her children had bullied, abused, and even pinched her, but Hannah had only cowered, never daring to cry or complain. Now, to Esther's astonishment, Hannah stood before her with arrogant defiance, leaving Esther frightened and worried, too intimidated to retaliate.

“Go visit your son,” Hannah said decisively. “He’s been jailed for ten years. You'll likely be dead by then.” She left without another word.

Rose, usually so pleased to work for her, was shocked by Hannah's dominance. She felt Hannah was justified, elated as if witnessing a victory. It took Rose a moment to react before she hurried after Hannah, as did Jimmy, ensuring a safe distance between Esther and Hannah before following. They drove away.

Esther scowled at their departing sedan, her face swollen. Hannah, she thought, was a bitch! Broken and enraged, she wanted to tear Hannah apart, but her son's predicament forced her to endure. Thinking of Wayne's imprisonment, she lost control and rushed to the detention center.

Upon seeing him, she wept uncontrollably. “Wayne, what have you done? Something illegal! Now you’re in jail, and I don’t know what I’ll do!” Her tears released the pent-up anger she felt towards Hannah.

“Mum, I didn’t mean to!” Wayne cried, spoiled since childhood by her habit of shielding him from consequences.

“Oh, my boy! What will I do? Your father is in prison, and now you are too!” Her anger threatened to suffocate her. The thought of her dead daughter sent her into another wave of grief.

“Mum, Hannah can help! Go find her!” Wayne exclaimed.

Esther cried louder. “Don’t expect her to help. She beat me! I wanted to kill her!”

“Mum, go to Grandma!” Wayne said, a sudden flash of insight illuminating his face. He couldn't stay in jail for ten years; Hannah could help reduce his sentence. He regretted his past opposition to her.

“Your grandma?” Esther asked, momentarily calming down.

“Grandma won’t let me die. Ask Miguel for help. He’s not hard-hearted, and he’ll help us, even though Grandma crossed a line before. Hannah will listen to her father.”

Esther stared at him for a long time before saying, “You have a point, but…”

“But what?” Wayne’s anxiety mounted.

“But you know how I treated your grandma. I treated her like an animal. That’s impossible.” Esther regretted her actions. She wished she hadn't alienated Lorie.

“It doesn’t matter. Grandma won’t let me die. Ask her sincerely, and she’ll help. Mum, please!” Wayne pleaded, crying.

Esther knew it was the only option. “Alright, I’ll go.”

“Mum, I hope it’s good news.”

“Right.” She left, determined to save her son.

Hannah went straight to the company. She awaited the Sawyer Group contract, a crucial step in her career. She was optimizing a development plan when her phone rang. “Dad,” she answered.

“Come home. Your grandma’s here.” She felt a surge of repressed anger. Wayne had threatened her father through Lorie. “Okay,” she replied, and hung up.

She left the office. “Ms. Hannah,” Rose called.

“No need to follow. Family matters. Call if the Sawyer Group arrives with the contract.”

“Yes,” Rose replied, watching Hannah leave. Hannah was stunning, brilliant, and capable. Rose wondered if Charles regretted their breakup and if Oscar was overjoyed.
