Chapter 309: A Call With Hannah
Susan finally disposed of the quilt, averting a potential suffocation. Manuel didn't deserve her death.
She left the bed, changed, and opened the door. Manuel was having breakfast with Tia. Seeing Susan, Tia quickly stood, asking if she was hungry.
"Where's my handbag?" Susan asked.
Tia retrieved it from the couch. "Your friend returned it last night."
Susan took the bag and returned to her room, slamming the door.
Watching her go, Tia remarked to Manuel, "Mrs. Johnson seems energetic. I doubt she'll attempt suicide."
Manuel smiled; his concern seemed unnecessary.
Inside, Susan searched for her phone, finding it depleted. After charging it, she discovered 40% power remained. Had she turned it off? She didn't seem to care. She called Hannah.
Hannah, working in her office, was surprised by the early call. Susan usually slept in.
Hannah answered, "Hey, Susan."
"Hannah, I bled last night!" Susan cried.
"Bleed?" Hannah was confused, wondering if Susan was losing her mind.
"I feel so bad!" Susan wailed.
Hannah, lips pressed together, fought back a laugh. Susan's loud crying, she knew, meant less actual distress.
Hannah listened to Susan's protracted crying. Finally, Susan stopped, complaining, "Aren't you going to comfort me?"
"I didn't want to interrupt."
"Hannah, we're best friends!"
"But your crying is torturing my ears!"
"Hannah!" Susan was furious.
Hannah soothed her, "Alright, alright, it's over. Just accept it."
"No! I won't! I hate him! I won't admit it even if he slept with me a hundred times!"
"So you want to sleep with him a hundred times?"
"You're infuriating!" Susan screamed.
"He's handsome. You might have enjoyed it last night."
"Enjoyed it? Yes, his skin was smooth, but so what? He's a man! And I'm the victim!"
"Nahโฆ I don't think so. He's not easy. He was a virgin for twenty-two years. Perhaps he's feeling sad about beingโฆraped."
"He's not easy? You mean I'm easy? I've been a virgin all these years too!"
Susan's anger escalated. She felt like jumping off a building.
"You were both virgins! Don't you think that evens things out?"
"Butโฆ" Susan felt Hannah was using sophistry.
She couldn't refute it. As children, she'd never won an argument against Hannah or Manuel, both top students.
"Hannah, did you bring me home last night?" Susan asked seriously. She wanted revenge. Hannah gripped her phone.
"I was with Henry. Why did you separate us?" Hannah felt angry; she would have preferred sleeping with Henry.
"I came after Theodore told me you left the nightclub with Henry. He said you were going to a hotel. I rushed to you because you're married to Manuel, and I didn't want you to cheat."
"Butโฆ"
"Let me finish," Hannah interrupted.
Susan gritted her teeth.
"At the hotel, you were alone. I thought Theodore was wrong. Then I saw you seemed poisoned with a love potion. It's dangerous if the drinker doesn't release their desire. I was afraid it would hurt you, so I brought you home. You even started fondling me! If I hadn't brought you home, you would have died."
"Where's Henry? He took me to the hotel. He wasn't there?" Susan was agitated.
"Do you think I'm lying?" Hannah asked.
Susan was silent. She knew Hannah wouldn't lie, but couldn't understand why Henry left her alone.
Didn't he worry about her?
"I was confused too. I even told Theodore to find him, but we couldn't." Hannah continued, "You should ask him why he left."
Susan said, upset, "I don't dare talk to him."
"No, he should be the one who doesn't dare talk to you."
"Hannah, you're biased against him. You're so different." In her previous life, Hannah knew nothing of Henry's misdeeds.
