When Hannah arrived at the office the next morning, Rose had already prepared a cup of coffee for her. Hannah nodded, "Thanks."
"Ms. Hannah, here is your schedule for today," Rose said respectfully.
While drinking her coffee, Hannah reviewed her schedule seriously. "At 10:00 AM, you have an appointment with the Director of Human Resources to discuss staff changes. It's estimated to conclude at 12:00 PM. From 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM, you'll have lunch; I've made a reservation in the canteen. After lunch, you'll have a break until 2:00 PM. From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, you'll work on the priority list you drafted yesterday. That's the schedule for today. Please review it. We have two hours remaining; would you like to issue a public notice about the staff changes before your meeting with Human Resources?" Rose asked.
"No, I'll inform everyone after the appointment," Hannah replied.
Hannah was amazed by Rose's efficiency. Yesterday, she'd only asked Rose to schedule an appointment with Human Resources; yet, Rose had meticulously planned her entire workday. No wonder Miguel recommended her so highly.
"Yes, Ms. Hannah."
"Okay, you may leave now."
"Ms. Hannah," Rose hesitated.
"What is it?"
"I learned that Roger Cooper has called a press conference. It will be live-streamed at nine o'clock this morning," Rose continued. "Ms. Hannah, if you're interested, I can show you the channel."
Hannah stared at her.
Rose felt uneasy. "Is there something wrong with my face?"
"I suppose efficiency and an acute awareness of current events are inherent qualities for a secretary, wouldn't you agree?"
"Not really. It's just me, specifically," Rose replied confidently.
"So I need to work harder to catch up, right?"
"I'm flattered," Rose said modestly.
Hannah smiled. "Alright, you can get back to work. I'll watch the livestream if I'm interested."
"Okay, Ms. Hannah."
After Rose left, Hannah began working, but soon switched to the livestream of Roger's press conference. The room was filled with journalists, but the conference hadn't begun. Hannah set her phone aside and resumed work.
At 9:00 AM, the press conference started. While typing, Hannah glanced at the screen as Roger began speaking. She anticipated his strategy. He'd met with the Sawyers yesterdayโa meeting she suspected was unpleasant. Knowing Roger, she assumed he'd retaliate during the press conference.
Roger began his speech: "This live-streamed press conference clarifies the recent events involving Jane and Charles. I believe there were misunderstandings, given the abrupt timing during Hannah's wedding. This clarification is necessary."
The livestream immediately filled with curious comments.
"Jane, a well-bred Cooper, raised with impeccable manners, has never done anything malicious. A pure and innocent girl, she was entrapped by Charles. We believed Charles was a gentleman. If he had no feelings for Hannah, as he claimed, he should have been loyal to Jane. Instead, he disdained her, saying she was beneath him. Worse, he offered a five-million-dollar check as compensation after abandoning herโa deeply humiliating act."
He produced the check, bearing the Sawyer Group stamp. Online viewers and journalists reacted with outrage.
Questions flooded in. "Mr. Cooper, do you mean your daughter loved Charles, but he toyed with her feelings?" "So Charles is a playboy?"
The situation was volatile. Roger answered questions, portraying himself and Jane as victims. Hannah paid attention, though she doubted he'd achieve his desired outcome despite public sympathy.
Ten minutes later, something unexpected happened. Charles appeared on camera. Hannah stopped typing, surprised by his arrival.
Charles remained composed. "Ladies and gentlemen, I hear Uncle Roger and Jane are accusing me. I don't wish to argue. I did sleep with Jane; she lost her virginity. However, I refuse to marry her under Uncle Roger's threats and slander."
"I swear I'm telling the truth! I never slandered you!" Roger retorted.
"Uncle Roger, I don't want to embarrass you. But if you push this, I'll fight back." Charles's tone turned sharp.
He beckoned staff. A laptop was opened, revealing a shocking video of Jane with several men.
Roger was stunned. While the sex video of Jane and Charles had been humiliating, it had at least shown a relationship existed. Now, the world saw Jane involved in a gangbang with strangers. Roger turned to Jane, furious. A moment before, she'd been feigning distress; now, her face was ashen with shame.
"No, Dad, I didn'tโฆ"
Roger slapped her across the face, knocking her to the ground. "No, Dad, I didn't do that! It's Charles! He set me up!" Jane cried, her face buried in her hands, racked with physical and emotional pain.
