Chapter 268: Meeting Again
Casey suddenly felt all her strength drain away. He was right. She couldn’t even defend herself. What was the point of worrying about anyone else?
Besides, her situation was entirely different from Caleb’s. The internet believed she had deliberately used the cat to scare Jesse. That word “deliberately” was a purely subjective accusation, and there was no way to disprove it. Even if she insisted it was unintentional, who would actually believe her?
Would people side with a beloved celebrity, or a powerless woman? She already knew the answer.
Jesse’s fame alone gave him an upper hand. Compared to him, she was nothing; utterly insignificant in the face of influence.
Countless fans would come down on her like a tidal wave, drowning out her voice entirely.
And if she couldn’t find her own little lifeboat in this vast ocean, those same waves she tried to weather would swallow her whole—dragging her down to the very depths.
After a moment of silence, Casey said, “Anyway, I’ve said what I needed to. Whether you act on it or not is up to you. It has nothing to do with me.”
No longer in the mood to deal with anything else, she dragged her exhausted body downstairs.
When she made her way downstairs, she was surprised to see Chelsea standing with a man she didn’t recognize.
Who’s that? Chelsea’s boyfriend, maybe?
Upon spotting her, Chelsea greeted her with a smile. “Ms. Rose, could you do me a favor and ask Caleb to come down? I need to speak with him.”
“Oh, okay.” No sooner had Casey reached the bottom step than she turned around and headed back up. Still, she didn’t mind. After all, Chelsea had once saved her. This was the least she could do.
Back on the third floor, she said, “Caleb, Ms. Yardley’s asking for you.”
Caleb didn’t say a word. He simply followed her down in silence.
But when he reached the bottom of the stairs and caught sight of the man beside Chelsea, his eyes widened slightly in surprise.
Isn’t that the guy who helped me carry the cat that day? I think his name was…
“Mr. Jenkins, we meet again. I wonder, do you still remember me?” Kurt’s smile carried a natural charm, effortlessly disarming those in his presence.
“Yes, you’re Mr. Yardley, right? Ms. Yardley’s… cousin, correct?” Caleb’s gaze shifted to Chelsea as he spoke.
To his surprise, Chelsea didn’t react at all, as if she silently agreed with Kurt’s claim.
Caleb’s confusion deepened. Why didn’t Chelsea offer any clarification when she had previously insisted she didn’t have a cousin?
“Right, it’s been two decades since I last saw Chelsea. We had a lot to catch up on when we met earlier.” Kurt and Chelsea exchanged a brief glance, both smiling warmly.
It was clear that Chelsea knew Kurt well, and Caleb, sensing this, chose to remain quiet for the moment.
He then asked, “Ms. Yardley, what did you need me for?”
Chelsea replied, “My cousin has already posted the truth online. Your tarnished reputation will be cleared soon!”
“So, you were behind that post?” Caleb was relieved.
Initially, he’d feared that someone might be using the guise of revealing the truth to discredit him. But once he realized that Chelsea was fully aware of the situation and was even involved, his worries began to fade.
Caleb was certain that, no matter who might wish him harm, Chelsea would never be one of them. If she truly had ulterior motives, she wouldn’t have gone out of her way to help him so much.
Given the power of the Yardley family, eliminating someone like him would have been effortless—why would she bother with such unnecessary trouble?
Chelsea nodded in agreement. “Good. However, if you truly want to clear your name, you’ll need to take a picture of your tenancy agreement and share it with the netizens.”
