Chapter 247: Satisfy You
Caleb’s chest heaved with intensity. “Didn’t you hear my question? Were you the one cooking in the kitchen?”
Yelena had just woken up, so her mind was still a bit foggy. After a moment or two of contemplation, she responded, “Yes… I was cooking because I upset you, and I wanted to ask for your forgiveness.”
A hint of sarcasm crossed Caleb’s eyes. “I don’t need your gestures of goodwill, nor should you come begging for my forgiveness! What’s done is done. What’s the point in doing all this now? The apartment is about to be consumed by the fire outside! Are you satisfied now?”
Upon hearing those words, Yelena immediately snapped back to reality. “What? Is there a fire?”
She swiftly dashed out of the bedroom, confronted by a blaze. The harsh smoke invaded her nostrils, provoking relentless bouts of coughing. Moreover, the fire was growing increasingly intense, threatening to reach her and Caleb at any moment.
“By the way, where are Mom and Jesse?”
She searched frantically, but she couldn’t find them. A negative thought crossed her mind, but she instantly dismissed it. No… It can’t be… The fire has just started… There’s no way it could’ve killed two people so quickly…
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed from outside the door. “Yelena, what’s going on?”
Deborah wore a shocked expression, unable to comprehend why the apartment had turned into a chaotic scene just because she had stepped out to buy groceries. The moment Yelena laid her eyes on her mother, tears gushed out instantly.
“Oh! Mom, the kitchen’s on fire! I…”
Seeing her choked with emotion, struggling to articulate her words, Jesse kindly helped her finish her sentence.
“Oh, dear… Caleb, how could you do such a thing? Even if Yelena did throw your cat down the building for my sake, you can’t just set her on fire! No matter what, we’re family. Isn’t that how you see it, too, Caleb?”
With a pitiful look in his eyes, Jesse spoke words that distorted the truth. Caleb’s gaze was icy cold. “Jesse, if you keep twisting the truth like this, one day you’ll get your comeuppance!”
A glimmer of pride flashed in Jesse’s eyes, but a wave of sorrow quickly replaced it.
“Caleb, you’re too harsh. Since you detest me so much, did you plan to kill both Yelena and me? Thankfully, Mom and I were out grocery shopping. Otherwise, given my constitution, I might have fainted already…”
With a mix of sorrow and anger in her eyes, Deborah pointed at Caleb. “Caleb, I indeed didn’t make a mistake in the past! You set a fire and plotted against your own sister, just for a small creature. If you’re still part of the Quixall family, I wonder what kind of trouble you’ll stir up in the future!”
With a surge of anger in his heart, Caleb said, “Mrs. Quixall, can you please get your facts straight? If I truly intended to harm Yelena, why would I set the place on fire? This is an apartment I’m renting, after all. If something were to happen to it, wouldn’t I be the one left paying for the damages?”
With bitterness in her voice, Deborah said, “You have the Yardley family backing you, so this amount of money is nothing to you! You could sacrifice your dignity, and money will come your way!”
Caleb was so exasperated that he laughed. “Fine… Fine. In that case, I’m off to find Ms. Yardley, and you’ll see just how I sacrifice my dignity!”
He then dashed downstairs, only to be met with two unexpected individuals, Chelsea and Casey. For reasons unknown, Casey had pleaded with the bodyguards at the door in advance, so Chelsea had decided to let her out earlier. As soon as Casey got out, she expressed her desire to go see Caleb. After some thought, Chelsea decided that it wasn’t such a bad idea. She had never been to the apartment Caleb was renting, so she seized the opportunity to see how he was doing.
