Chapter 236: The Disgrace of His Origins
Hearing that, Deborah said aggrievedly, “Caleb keeps trying to send me away. I’ve tried reasoning with him, but he won’t listen…”
“Feeling nostalgic for Dad’s whip, Caleb? Should I give you a refresher on what it’s like to be on the receiving end?” Yelena snapped.
Caleb sneered, “Ms. Quixall, you’re quite something! Not only did you trespass onto private property, but you also decided to dole out punishment yourself. Tell me, do you think these two offenses are enough to earn you a few years behind bars?”
“Go ahead and sue me if you want! Since when is it a crime for a sister to visit her brother’s home? And you call that ‘trespassing onto private property’? What a joke!” Yelena huffed, brimming with righteous indignation.
Caleb shot her an icy glare. “After the car accident, I cut all ties with the Quixall family! So tell me, doesn’t barging into my home uninvited count as trespassing?”
This is simply outrageous. I shouldn’t have brought Mrs. Quixall back. A single spark has ignited two bombs. I won’t be able to have peace today.
“That’s just a decision you made on your own! We never said we wanted to cut ties with you!” Yelena’s eyes burned with contempt. “You thought the Quixall family’s meals couldn’t compare to those of the Yardleys. You were so eager to climb higher, reducing yourself to nothing more than Chelsea’s shadow. And look at you now; ever since you left us, you’ve been struggling. You can’t even afford a proper meal, and you’re torturing Mom by forcing her to survive on instant pasta!”
Caleb felt a persistent throbbing in his temples. What’s wrong with eating instant pasta? And how am I torturing her by feeding her instant pasta? Have I been torturing myself by eating instant food for several days straight, then?
Jesse gently tugged at the corner of Yelena’s clothing.
“Yelena, I don’t think Caleb meant any harm. Stop chastising him. Maybe he and Ms. Yardley had a falling-out, which led to his financial troubles. As family, we should support one another. If we keep tearing each other down like this, we’ll only weaken our bond.”
After giving it some thought, Yelena found that Jesse’s words made sense. Chelsea must have grown tired of Caleb’s company, which is why she had him kicked out of the hospital, leaving him with no choice but to stay in this rundown house. That day, she criticized me for failing in my role as a sister, but what about her? Hasn’t she also cast Caleb aside? In the end, we’re all facing the same struggles, so there’s no reason to act like anyone is above the rest.
Yelena’s heart was filled with disdain.
The last straw in Caleb’s mind finally snapped. His fist tightened, and fury blazed in his eyes, barely contained.
“Care to repeat that?”
This time, Yelena had truly managed to infuriate him. Perhaps his origins were indeed unglamorous, but that didn’t give others the right to ridicule him at will. She was a young lady from a prestigious family, and she exuded an air of nobility. But that did not give her the right to look down on others. When the day arrived that she was brought low, she would finally grasp the true cruelty of her words.
Upon seeing Caleb’s fury, Yelena felt a hint of fear. She instinctively took a step back. “W-What are you trying to do? I’m your sister! If you so much as touch me, everyone will condemn you!”
Caleb sneered, “Oh, now you decide to acknowledge that you’re my sister? Did that ever cross your mind when you manipulated the heart compatibility results? Did the word ‘sister’ mean anything to you then?”
Visibly flustered, Yelena glanced at Deborah. “Caleb, choose your words wisely! When have I ever manipulated the compatibility results? If you keep making baseless accusations, I’ll have no choice but to sue you for defamation!”
